1st Gen Tundra Tool Kit

I am starting to too think about a tool kit for my truck. In the past I have kind of just thrown a bunch of stuff in a bag and called it a day. So far I have had what I needed but for every 10 items in the bag I have needed 1. So I was thinking what would a tool kit look like that was built starting with the most likely to need item and working towards the least likely to use item.

Start your own list or build off someone elses. Most likely to need to least likely to need.

Ex:

1. Tire Iron
2. Bottle Jack
3. Rachet
4. 10mm socket
5. ...
6. ...
7. ...
8. ...
9. ..

1. ...ending with

 

5. Blocks for Jack Pump (due to larger tires)

6. Tow Straps

7. Flash Light

8. Screw Driver (all purpose)

9. Small Collapsable Shovel.

 

Ratchet straps, pliers, hacksaw, flashlight, bottle jack, shovel, small hammer, screwdriver with multibit storage in handle, multisocket wrench, window punch,zip ties and a bag of lye.

 

Fixed it for ya.

Along with the basics already mentioned, never a bad idea to have an extra quart of oil and maybe trans fluid. A portable air compressor is great to have.

Also check your spare tires pressure once in a while. I know that's not a tool but the spare in my wifes car read at 4.5 psi last weekend, I quickly pumped it to 60psi. Last thing on Earth you want is to learn your spare is flat.

 

Gloves and a roll of shop towels...

Fuses, small 3/8” tool kit, some metric wrenches (10,12,14,17,19). A breaker bar with a 21mm and a 36mm (cv axle) pliers, a decent pry bar.. hmm... that would probably cover most things you’d need

oh a nice ratcheting screw driver with an assortment of bits and length shafts... way more compact that a full set of screw drivers

 

Harbor freight sells some pretty decent tool kits.

 

I have gear wrench 1/4,3/8 and their ratcheting screw driver set in a back pack.. been the best set of on the road tools ever

 

This is a good idea. Just a heads up for everyone that our Fuse Box in the Engine Bay has some slots for extra fuses. Even has a Fuse Puller.

I still want to devise some kind of bed pockets (like newer tacos) or weather tight frame mounted storage for things like fluids...

 

10) Not Hand Gloves, but Tire Plugs.

I was thinking the only thing that I’ve ever had to fix in 20 years on the road was a slow leak on a tire. Plugged it and good to go. Had some extras in my old side boxes from another prior at home plugging done in the driveway.

Truck blows my mind after all this time.

 

1. Jumper cables and the tire repair kit + portable air pump are the real life savers in here. Used both COUNTLESS times.
2. The shovel maybe for convenience, but a man can make a shovel out of a lot of things. I've carried one for years and NEVER used it.
3. A flashlight is cool, but there's a crappy one in my pocket (smartphone) all the time, so low on the list.
4. Extra fluids if you spend a lot of time in remote areas, otherwise there's a wallystop every 20 feet. in civilization.
5. Tow strap is occasionally handy, I carry one with a couple of axle / tree saver straps. RARELY use.
6. Basic tools can be handy if you're somewhere remote, otherwise I've only needed a crescent wrench and a screwdriver for repairs.
7. Zipties are an awesome add for this list. Amazing what a ziptie, or 4 daisy chained together can accomplish. Would put duck tape and WD-40 (or liquid wrench) in this category as all purpose get-it-to-stick, or get-it-unstuck supplies.
8. Bag of lye, If I need this one, I take back my shovel comment above. I will definitely need the shovel then. And likely a good flashlight. And maybe a powerbar or 5 hour energy drink. And gloves. Not my size either, too small for me but still can barely squeeze them on. If they don't fit...

 

Lol...I was wondering who was going to see the humor in my list. If anyone asked about the lye just tell them your into making soap.

You’d be pretty SOL if you popped a fuse and didn’t have an extra. I keep a 3/8 ratchet with assortment of sockets, assortment of open ended wrenches, various screw drivers, pliers, duct tape, electrical tape, wire strippers/dykes/crimped combo, 10’ of spare wire coiled up, handful of butt connectors, flashlight, basic first aid kit and some other odds and ends that I can’t think of. It’s probably time I got thorough it and re-evaluate what’s in there as it needs updating. Harbor freight and the dollar store are great resources when it comes to building a cheap BOB bag.

You might as well invest in like 15 of those 10mm and lock them in your glovebox... word on the street they have legs and can never be found when you need them...

 

How many fuses do you blow? Can’t remember if I’ve ever blown one before.

 

Aint that the truth?? Someday, archeologists will find a boatload of 10mm sockets in a well or some other low spot...

 

Building the next ark with all types of sockets and wrenches.... They will be the building blocks though..

When I rolled my '88 they yanked it out of the woods and flatbedded it to my place, no charge. Dude said that recovery would have been over $500.

Just for clarification, we have no 6, 7 or 8 mm fasteners in these trucks?

 

I haven’t seen anything below 10mm myself.

 

Radio has 8mm. 7mm may fit aftermarket hose clamps.

 

I'm pretty sure I've had to use 8mm a few times but I can't remember what it was, and I doubt it was anything you'd need to fix in an emergency. The socket set I keep in my truck goes from 10mm-21mm I think. I have a few bigger ones also. 32mm for the axle nut maybe?
