Can anyone tell me what these threaded holes between the rear bumper and the tailgate are for? There's two one on each side.

Might be for some sort of temporary use during manufacturing. Also sometimed thes light strips are placed in the slot.

    Just so you know these..

Oznium Brightest Light Bolt -... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01AFU4QB8?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

    ..fit into the threads perfectly.

@ElNopal gave me the idea. He uses them, plus additional ones as running lights.

I stuck with one in each corner and have them come on with my ignition so I always have a set of lights on in the rear as well for an extra attention grabber.

The holes are used to attach the 2007-2013 Sport bumpers, obviously a legacy detail as the plastic sport bumpers would not fit 2014+ beds

@biebs96 thanks for the great idea. I just ordered a set. Do you have pics for the wiring?

    awesome!

I don’t have any photos and if I took any they wouldn’t be very helpful because everything is wrapped in wire loom and tape.

but I will say if you want them always on when the vehicle is running, you can grab power from the 7way trailer plug.
The power only goes to that plug when the vehicle is in the ON position or running.

I opted for that route as I wanted the lights to act as rear DRL. It’s been about a year and I haven’t found any circumstance where I found myself wishing I could have shut them off for any reason.

Additionally, I’d check with local law or inspections before adding these lights.

I asked my inspection place and was told “that should be factory, I love it”

...also it’s not against the law in my state.

Hey biebs96, thanks for the tag!

    Sainz,

I have mine wired back to a switch and relay in the cab that also power grille and running board lights.

    I like that...
I have several Oznium LEDs in my truck.
In the grille, interior for the back seat floor board, in the console, and armed alarm light in the center speaker grille (replaced the plug for the auto lights sensor).
Used to use them for my custom puddle lights, but swapped those for VLEDs.

Very interesting, and in my opinion a huge contribution. There should be a page dedicated to anything on these trucks that is vestigial as part of its evolution.

I’m a vintage VW enthusiast... things like this matter.

Thanks to the OP asking the question and also to @biebs96 for sharing the info about the lights. I just got a couple white ones I plan on hooking up to my reverse lights to make backing into my dark garage easier.

I finally took the time to install the white Oznium lights in those little holes above the tailgate. I connected them to the reverse lights to make backing into my garage easier. So far it seems like a bust. I’ll post an update when I’m able to get into the garage (remodeling two bathrooms).

    Here’s some pictures:

    Installed

    Close up

    No lights

    New Oznium lights

I suspect the lights will perform better in the garage than in wide open space.
