Is it me or are the prices on 2020 Tundras Ridiculous???

I think it comes down to simple supply/demand. COVID has simply transformed the used market. A buddy of mine who owns a local motorcycle dealership has said he’s paying more at auction than the MSRP on the unit when new! I’m assuming that’s similar to the used truck market. It’s just crazy right now. I think there are deals to be had on new units when you factor in the crazy prices used units are going for. If you buy used from an individual, I think that’s the best bang-for-the-buck. Just got my 2010 Tundra for $12,500 with 170,000 miles and feel really good about that purchase. Zero rust and perfect maintenance history.

 

so i went looking for a crewmax 4x4 tundra last couple of weekends. prices for used 2018-2019 ones are MORE than a new one. Getting like 6-7k off sticker brings me to anywhere around $38800-$40600 for an sr5. Same one at other places used with say 15-20k miles is $40-42k. HOw can you pass up a new one if it is cheaper than a used one?

 

MSRP is a con. Dealers pay less than factory invoice as they get substantial rebates based on the number of trucks they sell during a sales period. This is why I always negotiate off the dealer invoice price and I go to the dealer late in the day (2 hours before closing) and the last day or two in the month. If I really want a vehicle then I offer $1000 over dealer invoice and most dealers are happy to do this if it is a clean transaction with no trade-in involved. Even in the days when I financed a new vehicle I would go to a bank and get preapproved for the amount needed and then negotiate an acceptable price and arrive the next day with the bank draft and complete the purchase.

I also dealt in the past with either the fleet manager or the sale manager as this avoided the whole game of being passed off from one salesperson to the next and having them say "while I need to check and see if we can do that". Now I go to the internet salesperson and ask for a quote based on a build sheet that I put together myself.

Once I have an agreed upon price I then ask for free items and in the past I have gotten mirrors upgraded to tow mirrors for free and a free bed liner and free side steps and a free aluminum diamond plate tool box for the bed. At the very least I expect them to provide any extras at their cost and to install them for free. The salesperson's attention is on the big ticket sale and they are not going to queer a sale for some accessory - not if they have a brain.

The prices I see for what the 2014-current are going is mind blowing compared to what I paid for my '08 CrewMax Grade w/tow package! Either the newer Tundras are that much better than my 2008 in every way or everyone is making a lot more money than me.

Prices for nearly everything are ridiculous. I do not pay full price for anything! Not even gasoline! Deals are available if you take the time and sometimes become a pest.

Nearly $4k more than I paid for my truck brand new from the same dealer.

 

I've had two unsolicited calls from the dealers that did my recalls offering $3k+ more than what I paid for my 2018. They don't make the inferno anymore and told them absolutely not. You couldn't pay me enough to part with this thing after what I went through trying to find it.

 

Yes indeed. Even before the pandemic (Dec 2019), it cost me an extra $3k (after negotiations) to buy a new SR5 than to buy 3-5 year used with 30-50k miles. In Ohio, that means 3-5 years of rust and it's only saving me $3k? Hard pass.

To be completely honest, the main driver for me buying Toyota was interest rates from Toyota Financial vs the American dealers. I had the best deal within 1.5 hours at a reputable Toyota dealer, after weeks of dealing with Ford, GM, and Ram dealers all over my region. Just happens to be a plus that the truck I bought is built to last lol

 

What I found in my search for a Tundra is all of the dealers are marking up used trucks ridiculously high initially and trying to see if someone will bite on the prices. I had looked at a 2018 Limited that was priced $2000 more than what a 2021 Limited would actually sell for. I discussed this with the dealership and they acted like I was crazy. I think it had 26,000 miles on it and they wanted $49500 for it. They were showing a price of a 2018 relative to the MSRP of a new 2021 which made no sense. I was arguing it should have reasonable depreciation, and that should be relative to how much the truck actually sold for in 2018. They then said they'll do $46500 which still seemed too high so I walked. I watched the truck on their website and every 2 weeks they kept ratcheting the price down. 3.5 months later, I think it finally sold at around $42500. If they had told me that originally I probably would have bought the truck. On my "used" 2020 that I just purchased, I saw the same thing. Ridiculously high price for a SR5. About $4500 over what I could buy a new 2021 SR5. They dropped another $1000 but held their ground. The truck sat for 3+ months. I went back twice and walked out twice. After 3+ months, they finally dropped to a fair price and I bought the truck. The lesson learned is you have to know what a fair price is and hold your ground. Someone else may not know the fair price as well as you, and if so, they'll over pay. I had plenty of time so it all worked out for me. And, I heard all of the "used car prices are really high now...yada yada" but then when I said, well why aren't you paying more for my trade-in then they wouldn't have a good answer. Gotta play that logic both ways!

 

Alaska has the advantage of no sales tax, however, a disadvantage of only 1 Toyota dealer. Prices here are pretty high in general because of transportation costs.

Nonetheless, I spent months looking new, used, flying down to Seattle and driving up, etc. After all was said and done, I couldn’t find a decent used in Alaska and by the time I’d go to the lower 48, I’d spend the difference in what I saved used in getting it back here (plus little / no warranty).

I found the exact color and model I wanted and was very happy in the price I negotiated for new (in Alaska). Details below:

Prices are insane. I will be keeping my Tundra for as long as possible. Ehen the day comes that repairs need to be made or parts replaced, I will fix it and keep moving, as long as the body and frame are good.

It also raises the buying power for those who work for crap wages, so it s not all bad.

 

My Toyota dealer has a couple near new repossessed tundras on the lot, and no new. The repos are priced as new.

On the lot they had one tundra today. 2021 SR5 for 50k.... more than what I paid for my limited 5 years ago.

 

Absolutely, as long as we pay it. I’m going to wait and see how things are in a year or 2. If gas prices spike like I think they will anything getting tundra mileage will be coming down in price, then I will pounce on one.

I hear ya. I m thinking if it keeps going like it is gas is on it s way out, or will be too expensive. No way I m buying a new vehicle atm. Things are too questionable.

Dealerships are not wanting to deal and prices are crazy. I looked an SR5 just like my 2019 today. I paid $38,800 for my Tundra but the same truck today? $51,700! That is crazy! Plus they only wanted to come off of the truck with the $1,500 in rebates they currently have. No way! Anybody know what the incentives are for March?
