What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Took the L off the center caps of my wheels. The Toyota emblem won’t cover all 5 holes. tomorrow after work I’m going to stop at Lowe’s and got some paint. I’ll fill the old holes, sand and paint the center caps. Then mount my Toyota emblems.

Would people clear coat these or is just paint fine?

 

Clear coat with a UV protectant will be helpful

 

Got my Tundra back today. Charged me for intake manifold gasket, T-stat & gasket, water outlet gasket, coolant, labor.
$240 in "paht's'. Labor, tax, environmental, brought it up to $656. $410 that could have paid towards a lift.
Cheaper than a head gasket job. have to watch to see if this really fixes it. didn't think to check the front carpets for damp (heater core?) as intially he couldn't find any coolant leaks. This truck always offering questions, never clear answers.

Having completed this install I would say the following:

If you are not patient and/or you are under a time crunch, this is good advice. A professional has the right tools, and because of the nature of repetitive work and expertise, I know they could do the install EXPONENTIALLY FASTER than a layperson could. Also, if they screw it up, they pay not you. Having said that, if you have the time and are willing to invest in a few cheap tools (get a steamer...even a $15 one like I got at Walmart, and either use zip ties like I did or get a high-quality hog ring puller/installer.....the one with the Katzkin kit is junk imho) it's not rocket science. In the middle of this project, I was cussing and asking myself why I ever did it. I'm not normally a patient person, so it was tough for me. Fortunately, it was during the early days of Covid when I was working from home and didn't really need my truck, so I would do an hour at a time until I got too frustrated and took a break and then get back to it later. For me, was this not the case, it would have made more sense to have an installer do it.

Now, having said all that...I learned so much doing this, that I plan on putting a set on the 2000 4Runner I just bought. I'm confident that after having done this once, I can cut my time in 1/2...maybe better...and I'll make my daughter help me since she will be driving the 4Runner when she gets her license. The 4Runner is not a DD, so I can take the same approach if necessary, but now I understand the problems that gave me frustration, so I don't know that it will be necessary....we'll see...

 

More restoration therapy


Refurbished my filthy intake manifold. I let it soak in concentrated de-greaser in a bin, then agitated.


A flexible dryer vent brush helped with scrubbing carbon out of the channels. I'm showing the stock photo because mine was gross after this job! Carbon droplets went EVERYWHERE. My hands were black.

(When you're a photographer for a living and didn't get the photo in focus. ) While some of the deposits were baked in, I got about 90% of it out, and I'd be surprised if I didn't have improved airflow, distribution, and cooling.


Further cleaned/dried with a rag, followed by the @Professional Hand Model toothbrush 3-In-1 Oil treatment that's becoming my favorite. Lastly, I used 150-grit sandpaper to clean up a few scratches in the seal mating surfaces. There was a small leak before, but that could have just been from its gaskets failing. I was easy on the sanding because I am not a machinist. I forgot to check for warpage but will do so.


Alcohol wiped up any remaining oil and powder before carefully installing an OEM gasket.


The bolts and nuts get torqued to 13 ft lbs in a cross pattern. There are lots of attachments and a couple different sizes, so I am cross-referencing Internet pictures to make sure I have everything on right, the FSM's pretty useless on this one. This engine's design does allow for the intake manifold to be installed/removed as one unit via bolts to the cylinder, so I will assemble mine separately and thoroughly.

Playing around with a cluster swap to 07 Sequoia because it has the cool LED behind the tinted screen like Lexus. Have to figure out a few warning lights and reprogram mileage before I can start using it. If it ends up being too much of a hassle I’ll probably just sand my stock cluster so it’s white. Anyone done this that can offer some tips?

If you ever have the opportunity to do this again use a sharpening stone rather than sandpaper to clean up mating surfaces. Takes a very fine amount of material off and ensures you don’t accidentally create a low spot.

That looks pretty nice.

I was considering doing the wet sanding on mine but that looks like it may work better. Since I swapped in the '17-19 86 radio the dash/center lighting needs some updating.

 

Nice work. How much scrubbing did it take to remove your goo from those ports? Reason I ask is I’ve done the Seafoam Intake Spray/Clean via the Throttle Body Intake. I wonder how much that Seafoam can really remove if that goo is thick? My exhaust did smell like Swisher Sweets for a few weeks so maybe it was melting off. A picture looking in through the TB looked all new/shiny, but no way to see down those ports without removal.

That 3in1 has a pleasing smell doesn’t it?

What a great question. Honestly I really had to scrub, and still couldn't get the bits that were baked in without doing some sort of sanding in there. But that's 260K-miles-and-I-don't-know-how-well-old-owners-took-care-of-it carbon. I'm sure Seafoam doesn't hurt, I wouldn't swear by it for air stuff but I love putting it in the oil 100 miles before an oil change. And yes I love that 3-in-1 smell, it's really like a metal cleaner with how well it loosens dirt that degreaser won't.

 

Seen some guys do this swap in the Facebook group. I believe that only the limiteds with the rear air suspension have those fancy gauges so then you get all those warning lights that come with uhh... not having rear air.

I sanded my gauge faces and have a small write up (no pics) in my build thread.

Both of my oils seals on the front diff are leaking so I'm going to tackle them this weekend. I remember a few posts about the driver's side being finicky and I think it was 3mm past flush, can anyone find that posts or remind me?

I think the passenger side just goes in until it stops, correct?
