    Hello everyone.

My name is Steve and it has been 10 days since I purchased my first foreign vehicle...

I purchased a 2021 Tundra CM with the TRD 4x4 package. Today I’m actually heading back to the dealership to have them install the TRD wheels and tires that my wife negotiated because she “liked the black rim wheel thingies better”. So my next post will likely be in the for sale section for the original 20” rim wheel thingies and tires. Ha! Tomorrow I’m scheduled to drop the truck off to have AirLift bags installed. Typically I do a lot of the work like that myself but for the extra $180 labor cost, I’d rather let someone else mess with it for <2 hours vs the 4+ that it would probably take me. I’m getting the airbags for when I tow our TT. Last week I hooked up the TT to make adjustments to my WD hitch and measured a ~2” squat which is about what I saw on my previous truck.

My previous truck was an F250 which I loved and hated at the same time. Over the years I became growingly frustrated with the amount of repairs and the cost of the of diesel repairs. Everything costs >$1,000 to fix on a Diesel! Maintenance is also a huge cost, even when doing it myself. The truck took 16 Qt of oil. Do the math. I was ready to move away from the HD truck which was definitely an overkill for the TT we have.

Obviously I looked at all the domestic trucks and became angry at all the available configurations. When looking at the F150 which claims a towing capacity of 13,000+lbs I got even angrier. Good luck finding that elusive truck that actually has that specific set up. I looked at every dealership within 200 miles and could not locate even 1. Instead I found myself searching through 6 engine options and and 4 axle options; multiply that by 3 cab options and you now have a head spinning amount of combinations to look through to find the one you need. And Ford dealers don’t make it easy to know which truck you’re looking at. You have to open every listing (online) and pull up the window sticker to see which rear end it has. And the dealers are so dishonest “this truck will tow anything”. Anything?! Give me break. Oh, and what the hell is up with the domestic manufacturers prices? $60-$70k for a non HD truck???!!!! They’ve lost their minds. Or maybe we’ve lost ours since people are willing to pay those prices. I just had a friend of mine buy a brand new F150 Platinum which I thought was a used 2011 f150 because of the new “retro” look. I can’t believe he spent $70k on that o_O

I ended up with the Tundra because of the quality (Toyota in general), 4.3 rear end on every model, the 5.7L V8, and it doesn’t look half bad either. Looking forward to many years of ownership - good and bad.

Thanks for the wealth of information posted here. I spent many hours reading through before pulling the trigger.

    Welcome from the Hill Country.

If you have a TT, check out Towing and Hauling forum here for possible Tundra limitations re your trailer (payload, tongue weight, TWR). Your truck also does not have the ATF cooler in the grille area. You should read many threads on ATF temps for 2019+ Tundras used for towing, and make an informed decision.

    :worthless:

Show us some pics once the dealer gets your wheels on.

Your Tundra is not a "foreign" vehicle...It was built in Saaaan Annnntonio, Texas.:D

Thanks John. Definitely agree - people need to know their numbers. The Tundra towing capacity well exceeds my TT. The hitch weight is a little closer to capacity than towing capacity but still about 80lbs below when accounting for fuel, bed liner, me, etc. I know my rigs weight fully loaded and have measured the hitch weight in the past with everything on board. The truck can do it. Even without a TC.

Read the threads on Scangage II, OBDFusion or TorquePro apps, and learn how to monitor your ATF temps while towing. Some members have set off the idiot light on the dash indicating ATF overtemperature (302 deg F) while towing.

Great info. I have a few short trips coming up next month. I will definitely monitor and if needed, invest in TC.

Side note - I’ve toured the Tundra plant in San Antonio (used to live there) with my kids a few years ago for a class trip. Very cool!

Welcome from the Buckeye state! Love the wheels! BTW, I tow a Lance 2285, around 5500# to 6000# loaded. I am trusting Toyota on the trans cooler delete from 2019 on. My FJ trans would smell hot after towing our pop-up camper. I have not noticed any odor after towing our Lance.

    Welcome from Delaware.

Awesome choice, and the best damn color available!! The last of the true trucks, 6 speed trans mission, no start/stop BS and thirsty like a truck should be. It just does what a truck is supposed to do and for a long long time.

If your WDH is set up properly, you should not have more than a 1 inch drop when your trailer is hooked up.
