Scraping the 38-gallon tank?

Love my new 2021 Limited TRD and can’t wait to get it dirty.

It will be used primarily for road trips, camping. Lots of dirt. Mainly easy forest service roads, rocky desert and mountain roads, but sometimes a little more than that. Then there is always the unexpected obstacle, like river crossings, water bars, drop ins and the like.

    Never rock crawling, Rubicon etc.

Coming out of a lifted 97 taco, and am just coming to grips as to how low and long this Tundy is.

I’m noticing that the 38-gallon tank hangs lower than the frame.

Is scraping the 38 gallon tank a common thing? It looks like the tank might even drag in deep sand and snow, or muddy tracks where the wheels are deep in the grooves.

I want to keep this truck as stock as possible, but will do what’s needed to keep from scraping the tank.

The TRD Fuel tank skid plate does not instill confidence.

I know the 38-gallon tank was long in coming, and I best not ask if there are aftermarket tanks that tuck up higher, so I won’t, for now.

So, is scraping the 38-gallon tank a common thing?

You would have everybody and their brother on this forum in line to buy your 38 gallon tank. Whatever you do, don't install the worthless 26 gallon tank.

Ah ha… I knew it. So they do scrape! :D

Thanks for the link. Very nice.

It looks like this product would help protect against punctures, but not so much for hard rock high centering damage.

This and a 2’’ lift, along with slightly taller tires might be all I really need.

Anybody actually scrape. Get hung up? Tear the tank clean off?

Good to know. So you have scraped a few times, but no real damage?

I looked at your build link. Nice indeed.

I did not see a fuel tank skid plate. Are you using one?

The OEM plastic tank skid is more durable than it looks. I dragged mine over many rocks before it finally cracked. Even with a little crack it provided some decent protection before I replaced it with an RCI tank skid.

I like the sound of that.

Well, not the sound of a scraping tank, but that you have scraped a few times without catastrophic failure.

At first glance, I thought the tank and skid were made by Glock. I’m guessing that the system can flex or give a bit?

    Starting to feel better….

I've scraped my gas tank a lot. I had the RCI skids and they did well for me but the fact that they are strapped to the gas tank and not the frame made be swap them out for the Victory4x4 skid. Take a look at my build page where I have pictures of me going over a tree trunk obstacle. The second picture is all frame and gas tank skid as I was high centered until my front wheels found traction.

I think the Trd Pro skid is just as good as the RCI. They're mounted the same way and are about the same gauge thickness.

Agreed, my first thought was for a skid that bolts to the frame. But after a few short posts, I am thinking for my conservative driving, the RCI may be all I ever need.

Well dang. The pix are telling. Amazing obstacle. I actually looked at your build a while back and was impressed. Still am! That is some truck porn, right there.

It looks like the driveshaft was close to taking a hit.

not related to this topic but i pumped 10 gallons of old fuel out of a waverunner this weekend. As I carried 75lbs of fuel I thought how wasteful to extract pump and distribute gasoline. Then my Tundra as a 38 gallon fuel tank, LMAO. I am one of the few in full support of electric vehicles...

Not to mention the tremendous amount of environmental damage done in the process of mining materials to build “green” energy products. Work that, more often than not, is done by very poorly paid people. I’m all for electric vehicles because they are indeed the future, but we need to get all aspects of this figured out before we go all in on this. Right now green energy is not very green at all.

Just think about the wind turbines, nearly the whole infrastructure to produce and install them is running on fossil fuels. The whole process is using more than the things will save. It is a fraud- jobs program. You can fool some sometimes but not all all of the time.

Drunken sailors and marines don’t have to be stuck in Gitmo to scrap. I’ve seen it happen in many other places. All in good drunken fun though.

I am a BIG fan of RCI and their skids and I bought them except for the gas tank skid. In your case you sound like you will be doing mild wheeling so if scraping the tank is a concern RCI has an aluminum version (I believe) of the gas skid but their skids require you to purchase $175 gas tank straps. I purchased Victory 4X4 because they do not require additional straps and I like the mounting better since it has full support of all the mounting locations and RCI did not have the best mounting in my opinion. The down side for you (not me, I wanted steel) is they only offer steel because they believe to fully protect something that long steel was required
