Since moving into my new home, I have found that I have hard water. I have installed a whole home water softener and though it feels soft I'm still getting water spots on my truck when I wash it. I remember seeing someone on here talk about home DI systems but can't remember who or where.

So, is anyone else running a DI system to wash their cars? If so, what are you using?

You would just need some sort of demin bottles to pass through before use. Like a worker and polisher. We clean very large quantitiies at work. We have 2 tanks that each hold 650,000 gallons on di water!

Are you sure your outside hose bib goes through your softener? Most do not since they typically connect up to the line going into the house.

Yep, I plumbed in the softener myself. Did it right after the pressure tank. I did plumb the spicket on the other side of the house before the softener so I can water plants and such but the car wash spicket is definitely plumbed after.

I had a whole home RO system in my old house, cost was about $2500 and I installed myself. I only did an under the sink unit in the new place and we get water spots on EVERYTHING. I am considering springing for the whole home unit again.

I don't like water softeners, adding more mineral to the water might change pH but it seems to me that it will still leave deposits when surfaces dry. Particularly surfaces that heat up in the sun and dry fast.

Because I don't want to add salts, I am also considering the NuvoH2O system. I know a guy who actually installs RO systems in large scale operations and he uses the Nuvo system...

I was looking at website and looks like filters are about $100 to replace. The housings are pretty generic. If anyone uses the cr system, does it REALLY work? If so, thinking of making my own, other than the electronic media replacement. IMG_1052.jpg

Question Mike, is your system a salt system or just a resin / carbon system. The only true way to remove the hard water calcium deposits is with a salt water system. Companies will make lots of claims about a whole house water softener system, and not be using salt. The salt water systems today have a separate brine tank and send very little salt into the home. The salt systems of yesterday that we grew up with had a one tank system and gave that very slimy shower feel. I have talked with numerous companies that sell both systems, and salt is the true water softener. I am also installing a drinking water RO system under the kitchen sink to remove all the chlorine, fluoride etc added to our water today. I am in So Cal and we have some of the hardest water in the country. I guess my speech is null and void if you already have a salt system. Good luck with all.

Yep, mine is a salt softener. Read a lot of bad reviews about non salt systems.

To much salt can cause issues. Try to keep the tank around half full. Filling it all the way up is kinda a no no.

Sediment filter to carbon filter to softener to r/o. R/o goes to fridge and sink faucet. Ice cubes are almost clear.

If the car wash system really works I was thinking about just buying the double filter housing and just buying the filter cartridges from the cr spotless website.
    It would be about $200.

Nice set-up. Did you plumb the sediment and carbon prior to the salt system or after ? What brand of components ? Hope we aren't jacking your thread Mike.

Dang! Nice setup! If I would have known about this issue while I was building, I would have a room dedicated just for water treatment just like this.

Little corner of garage, right next to water heater. Got the softener and r/o as add ons w house when built. I added the pre filters. Plumbing is pretty straight forward. Got the filter housings off Amazon. Not too expensive. Search big blue filters, they'll pop up. 4x20".
If you're gonna do something similar remember to put shut off valves before and after the filters to depressurize when changing filter cartridges. I do em at 6 mo intervals. R/o same schedule.

CM. I'm from SD. Never did the filtration stuff. Now, I'd never not do it. No BS, my ice cubes are almost see through. Only time they're not is about 2 out from changing filters.

Installed my home water softener and drinking water RO system. Water softener consists of a large canister with a media bed in it and a separate brine tank. Does auto back-flush based on water usage, not day of week.

I'm not a plumber, but think my copper plumbing and solder joints came out OK.

Also have an Electric tankless water heater that's about the size of a VCR. I was just getting past my cancer battle when we did a slight remodel and had a plumber install the tankless. He did not install the flushing valves and the So Cal hard water ate through the heater element. Now with the softener, that will be a thing of the past..

Do you have a pic of your setup? I have been looking at doing something like this for a long time but just cant seem to figure out what system to go with. This looks like a good system but how much are filters?

You installed a water filter to avoid hard water stains resulting from the buildup of minerals like calcium and magnesium. Water softener for pre-filtering water filter for the whole house. Or use RO system water filter.
