Given the advent of instant on Laser, are detectors even relevant anymore?

In order for the cops to use Lidar, they have to be stationary, whereas radar they can be moving. But if you are speeding and the lidar detection goes off....you are toast, there's no warning for lidar like there is for radar.

Being a retired one, but a deputy who seldom had time for such things, I was almost always stationary and seldom seen. Was alot like clubbing baby seals. During movement I was pacing on a calibrated speedo. It did the trick. I never used X..just LIDAR. Oh well...just curious how things have changed

I believe CHP uses only Ka band for radar but lidar is popular too. Small town locals may use K band radar but not too sure. x band is very old and probably only a handful of places use them, Ohio comes to mind.

Again...county deputies were never doing speed enforcement unless we were in a contract city or someone was driving like an ass. They were old guns that seldom cleared the trunk, let alone the dash. County never invested in or seemed to pursue grants for such toys.

I do like tech though so I seldom got excited about seeing them. Most encounters were comedic, as the drivers often stated, "Damn this pile of sh*t.. I routinely cut em a break or let them off.

Texas DPS uses instant-on. Unless you get a squawk off a car ahead, you will be toast. Pointless to have a radar detector on Texas highways. Go up to +10 mph, and be happy. If you want to go faster than that, you're in too big of a hurry.

Thats what i find also around the Sacramento area. Sheriffs are never the ones doing speed traps, its always the incorporated cities police that do them.
