New member here and soon to be Tundra owner. OP mentioned this process only works for NEW vehicles, is that just so dealerships can't pull the "well that tundra has less miles"? I've been trying to get dealerships to bid against each other without much luck.

I'm also wondering how much on average this approach can save? $5k? $8k? My budget is $35k pre sales tax.

    Tacoma driver here.
    Future Tundra owner.
Does this car-buying process work if I want:
    Crew
    Cement
    Blackout package
    Spray in Bed
    Black rims
    Predator steps?

What if I were open to leasing or financing options once the dealer and I get down to that step?
    Does that matter?

I am patient but would like to take advantage of the end of 20 model year.

    Thanks

End of 20 model year trucks are moving, so if you're picky, it'll get slim, fast. I'm loosely following the new buying guidance, and haven't had much luck. So far, sitting at $4k under MSRP without incentives. For context, I'm after Super White or Cement SR5 Crewmax 4x4 with the convenience package, and nothing more. I'll pick my steps, rims, tires, tint, and add TRD Pro grill aftermarket, etc.

ramonortiz55 - well done sir, well done.

I am a brand new member to this group (within the hour) but feel like I got to know the forum well over the last 4 days. I'm an old man, with learned patience, time and nothing but first world concerns. I've hated dealership disco since I was a young man who once was counting quarters and dimes trying to afford a used POS Nissan at a dealer because my tennis shoes were wearing out from walking. Round Table Pizza wage wasn't meant to take you far. The Ortiz method on this thread is pure GOLD.

Tundras.com is what cemented my decision to obtain a 2021 Tundra TRD Pro in Lunar Rock - I simply fell in love with the color while visiting a dealership to check out 4Runners. This is where I learned about the infamous TRD Pro ADM - $15K above MSRP because it's a "hot item!" WTH? I had noticed this dealer tactic once upon a time while buying a Porsche where the 918 on the showroom was dramatically above MSRP, but hey, they only made, well, 918 of them. Seemed logical. We are talking about a Toyota here. Great cars but $15K? Jeez. Well, the 4Runner was a bit small, I still wanted a truck, the Tundra Platinum test drive was amazing, so I set out on my quest. This forum was amazing for advice, tips, vehicle interest fodder, and most importantly a ton of pictures of the Lunar Rock in various scenes - this solidified my lust for it.

After 4 days of heavy research, moving on from the Ram Truck idea (what a beautiful ride and cockpit, but man, it's still a Chrysler and I haven't forgotten when Iococca ran the joint churning out POS after POS), I finally found my deal today for the exact rig I want for exactly MSRP. After hearing so many "I have no idea if we will get one anytime soon" or "we are selling for $$$ over MSRP, but you get the PermaPlate for $10K!" I feel like I scored one for the team at MSRP out of state. Yes, Mr. Ortiz, I was willing to go from Cali to Main to get what I wanted!

Pretty damn happy old man here. Thank you all for being such great contributing members!

Now, to figure how to get it safely from Texas to California without driving it home, then getting it CARB certified. See, first world concerns.

    Cheers!

Just found this thread - well worth the read - more so in this stupid crazy market.

No, you will not find the same deals you did a year ago this time.

Yes, it is a lot of work following these steps.

Bottom line though - this thread can save you a lot of $$ on that new purchase - and trust me if you keep reading this forum you are gonna need it.

    Wow... just... unreadable.

"Also happening in high numbers for the 2012 Tundra, is the transmission failure that occurs before 10,000 miles."

    Lets crunch some numbers:

Out of 101,621 Tundras sold in 2012, 2 units allegedly had transmission failures, that's exactly 0.00196%, how is this high numbers?

I'm not defending the Tundra, it certainly has it's demons, but that site is just BS.

Doing this right now! Sent to 55 dealers and we will see where the chips fall. And make sure you spell out magnetic gray metallic if that’s what you want. Have had several dealers that don’t know what it is lol

I went the "easy" route, prior to meeting my wife, she was the F&I Manager for a large Chevrolet dealership. I have so many stories of us going into a dealership and a sales rep ignoring her and talking to me....KaBoom! A short story: My wife wanted a new Forerunner and was trading in her old one. She negotiated the deal over the phone and when we showed up to sign, the Sales Manager was "not available". My wife is pissed and knows the game. She looks at the sales rep and says you have 15 minutes to get this worked out or we walk. She lays the numbers out and this guy does the "I need to talk to someone" and disappears. He comes back and says he can't give her $22K for her trade and offers $18K. My wife looks at him and says "You just wasted 5 minutes, now I want $23K for my trade!" It was awesome, I'm trying not to burst out laughing and the rep looks like he messed his pants! He leaves again and comes back with "We can't do $23k, will you take $22K?" With a smirk she says yes and 30 minutes later we were out the door in her new rig.

    Solid advice from the OP!

I don't know if I missed it, but never mention a trade if you have one. If you do plan on trading and they ask, say no. Yes, tell a lie! Don't think for a minute that they won't lie to you! Once you have your price, say you changed your mind and negotiate your trade separate from your purchase.

Started on this process looking for a vehicle for my wife. Due to the current situation, I'm doing it a little differently. Essentially, I found every dealer within about a 3 hour drive that has the vehicle I want on their lot asking about their out the door price. I'm looking at 2022s so don't have as much choice.

First interesting question so far: Would you be looking to buy this for yourself?
