Yeah I wish we could just change the refraction/reflection of the housing to direct the light better, but I don’t want to open that can of worms. I’ll try and document the light pattern before and after the bulb replacement. Maybe someone with a 3D printer could Mickey Mouse a piece to assist the light path from within the housing...there’s for sure an opportunity there if the only alternative is adding more stuff to the bumper (which I’m likely to do like everyone else who wants to see wtf they’re backing into).

I’m also interested in the info button for sure.

I think I’ll raise my front end 1.5” or 2” to level it out (sounds like it’s 3.5” to level but I’ll be towing and hauling and don’t want to be nose-up). Luckily the previous owner put nice KO2’s on. They sure grab. Highly recommend.

You can replace the antenna grommet with one off of Amazon. This is the one I ordered: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JGHX63G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_z8eroYppdIWLv

I also ordered this antenna: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07WF6SCP5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_OyIV1hWx4LlSW

I have yet to see any issues with reception though I primarily use SiriusXM and my streaming over CarPlay or Bluetooth from my phone.

The antenna grommet doesn't fit as snug as the factory one, but the shorty antenna certainly tightens it up and it looks great!

Congrats on the truck!! Mine is a 2010 SR5 CrewMax and I bought it in July with 215k miles on it. It has just over 217k on it now and so far I've replaced the stock radio, installed a backup camera, replaced the tires and wheels with 20" rims and a little better aggressive tread tire, and replaced the 12v power ports with dual USB ports.

I liked the low-profile front view of the RC3 at first glance, but it just juts out too far for my liking.
I’m thinking there’s a market for skid plates that stick out a bit...this looks like an underbite of 10” or so, but I bet the 4” range would be perfect for a couple lights and a not-huge winch. I bet they’re out there.

Edit: after looking a little bit, all I could find was skid plate/bumper combos which we all know about. I don’t want to replace the whole bumper. If anyone knows of skid plate/bull bar combo, please let me know.

just coming back here cause i stumbled upon a post that seems relevent....

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/gy6-35-hir-921-reverse-light-upgrade-vs-high-power-leds.474996/

thats obviously on a tacoma, but its the same bulb we have... long story short... its a hir(fancy halogen) bulb, 3x brighter than stock. and cheap too. 9 bucks a pop. mild modification to bulb required. i think thats going to be my plan. between that and a 9011 high beam swap, i think ill be happy with my lights. although i do need to find a spot to mount a couple led rigid cubes that i have lying around.

Worth a shot at $9 per bulb and spread the prongs in a curved shape. I actually canceled my last Alla bulb order and just paid $20 for two of these Osram bulbs. Wish me luck!

Also, at some point in the last week, I came across an aftermarket tail light assembly/housing that throws the reverse light better backwards. I can’t find it now. I think it was a little less curved and was more angular. It looked awesome and I didn’t bookmark it. If anyone has a direct link, I’d appreciate it. After I get the bright Osram bulbs installed, it would be cool to take it a step further and direct all that light in the right direction.

Also in the reverse lighting department:

I want this lighted hitch by Hitch Works, as it’s steel instead of plastic. I imagine the plastic ones break all the time. May attempt welding one with 3/8” and pop two lights in: https://hitch-works.com/collections/frontpage/products/lighted-standard-2-hitch-10k-hw2s

Plasti-Dipped the front Emblem today. I’m going to use one coat of the Plasti-Dip Glossifier because it is supposed to make it more UV Resistant. I hope it stays pretty much flat black with just one coat...we’ll see.

Headlights look much, much better after using Meguiar’s. It worked pretty well- that last spray step is magical. I just made sure to tape off the paint to avoid splatter. Thanks @frichco228 for the recommendation.

Almost got 14 mpg with the tonneau! If I drive 20k miles this year, I’ll guzzle 64 gallons less (1,482-1,418).
If gas costs $3/gal then the tonneau will save me $192.
If gas costs $4/gal then the tonneau will save me $254.

The tonneau will pay for itself way faster than I thought (probably in 8 or 9 months with gas prices going up).

I also didn’t realize how nice it is to keep the bed dry. The tailgate lock wasn’t working but I kept using WD-40 (about 5 times over the last couple weeks) and it finally budged, so now I can leave some tools back there and feel ok about it.

Got the stubby antenna installed today. The rubber at the bottom was disintegrating and needle nose pliers were necessary. 30 seconds to install. Reception seems equal to stock antenna.

Dechromed the grille (it was 13-year-old faded black) and grille surround today- 6 coats of plasti-dip plus 5 coats of Plasti-Dip Glossifier.

    Welcome!! Great looking truck!

Next time you do your headlights, rather than taping everything, just remove them and you don't have to worry about splatter. Same if you ever end up needing to do the emblem again, it just pops right out so no need to tape anything up.

Next tire: 295/70/18 KO2. It’ll be a couple years, but that’s the plan.

I had some overspray with the plasti-dip. No garage space meant spraying outside. I assume there’s no way to remove it besides coating the small patch of overspray with another coat or two and peeling it all off...anyone done it before?

If I were doing real spray paint I would have waited for the garage.

Try Goo Gone or some WD-40 on a rag and wiping clean.

    Reverse lighting update:

I installed the bright Onsram bulbs and, although they’re definitely an improvement over the stock bulbs, I still want to throw more light back there for a tight situation I’ll inevitably be in.

About a week ago I bought a CHEAP led light strip to try and quickly brighten up the reverse light situation. I just returned it because the reverse (white) lights never worked. I like the idea of added visibility with the brake lights and running lights but still just want to see better at night when backing up.

I knew I’d return it since reverse lights didn’t work, but as an experiment I stuck it on under the tailgate and was surprised how sticky it was- but 5 days later one end started peeling away. I don’t think I’ll try another adhesive strip.

    Onto more permanent/expensive things...

I made another thread about this and regret it— but my stereo started cutting out. It’s apparently a known problem since 2007 and Toyota used to swap out the head unit under warranty.

Now I’m in the market for a new head unit, and would like to keep it as affordable as possible. It looks like there are sub-$200 head units on Amazon with a 7” display, which sounds ok to me.

Are there viable cheaper options (dare I say Wal-Mart)...?

What do I need to install it in my gen 2 besides the head unit?

MZAutoparts headlights (found on Craigslist for $50). Installed in about 25 mins.

Those damn fasteners for the painted plate under the headlights are impossible not to break. Superglued afterwards.
