Need A/T tires in next 2 days!

Hi all! After looking through the https://www.tundras.com/threads/largest-tire-you-can-run-stock-for-all-generations.9762/ thread I determined I can get 275/70R18s without a lift and it will be pretty maxed out (side note - that size isn't listed on the OP but many commented later that those fit).

I will be the casual 3-4x/yr off-roader, nothing major. I also want to go to SoCal mountains to ski 2 times/yr without having to put chains on in the R2 chain requirement. "Requirement 2 (R2): Chains or traction devices2 are required on all vehicles except four wheel/all wheel drive vehicles with snow-tread tires on all four wheels."

"Snow tread" tires are defined as: "A 'Snow-tread tire' is a tire which has a relatively deep and aggressive tread pattern compared with conventional passenger tread pattern". Snow-tread tires can be identified by examining the sidewall of the tire where the letters MS, M/S, M+S or the words MUD AND SNOW have been stamped into the sidewall."

So, what A/T tire would work? Do all A/T tires have the M/S designation? Like KO2s, Toyo Open Country, etc?

 

Just about any tire you would put on a tundra is M+S.

 

But not all are three peak certified. If you need them in two days I think you’ll be limited to what’s in stock. Good luck

 

Not all A/T tires are mud and snow or 3PMS rated. Many times they offer two or 3 models of the same tire, one with and one without the designation. When you pick a tire, make sure you order the version that comes with the correct designation.

Mud and snow rating isn't quite as good as the three peak mountain snowflake rating, but my understanding is that they should last slightly longer when used year round, so if that's your plan, M+S tires are the way to go.

I wasn't thrilled by the performance of my KO2s in the canadian winter, and that was with the 3PMS. The new Open Country AT3s are supposed to be very good, but I haven't had a chance to try them yet.

 

Falken wildpeak at3w. I run 265/70 r 18 e loads. They are a 33 inch tire. No issues with rubbing and have handed anything the Alaska winter has dished out without flinching. Also have great highway manners.

 

Thanks - so for KO2s are there variations from "M/S" to "3PMS" and even other variations in between? There are some KO2s in stock near me...I've heard their rubber wears faster in recent years but with the warranty I'm not concerned...I've made partial mileage warranty claims as Discount several times with no hassle when getting new tires.

The KO2s in stock say 3PMS in the listing: "3-Peak Mountain Snowflake Rating (exceeding the Rubber Manufacturer Association's requirements for traction in severe snow and winter weather)."

 

Thanks, that's one I'm considering...but the 275s (.6" taller, .4" wider than 265s). I know I'm pushing it but several posts claim they fit. Plus when I get the 3/1 lift soon I don't want to have to turn around and get bigger tires again.

 

KO2s come in M+S, 3PMS, and regular. I've had mine for a couple years now and they are still less than half worn. If you're planning on using them in the snow a lot, I would definitely get the 3 Peak Mountain Snowflake version for the added performance. If it's not something you'll see often, M+S should be fine and should last longer in warmer weather.

 

KO2s are 3PMS, but performance in snow was meh for me. GY Duratracs are also 3PMS and I ran that tire/size for two sets of tires on my 2008 with no lift. They weren’t great on wet pavement though - which we have a lot of up here. I’m running the Falken Wildpeaks now (also 3PMS) and so far they’ve been great. Couple trips into the snow, lots of wet pavement, and a little mud and dilapidated forest roads and they’re doing great. The price was also much better than KO2s or Duratracs.

 

I personally think you’re overthinking this. You don’t need 3PMS tires living in San Diego to go skiing twice a year. When a tire does well in certain conditions, it usually sacrifices in other conditions. Notice the guys replying all live up north.

I missed that part. Yeah. Pretty sure you’ll be just fine with any A/T tire when you’re driving a 4WD pick up to the ski hills down there. It’s amazing how many people in prius’s and Honda civics will drive up to Mt. Hood when they have the “traction devices required” order in place.

 

Yeah I just don't want to put my chains on! So as long as they pass that test I'm happy...so the M/S should be fine. I hate chains.

Oh dang Discount just mounted them, i’m at AutoZone buying tire chains, and I noticed they gave me three 3PMS and one M/S... and now they’re closed for the day. what’s the difference between the two types of tires? I need to go get the fourth to match.

 

How did they fuck that up? Two different SKUs. They’ll need to fix it for you... one has mileage warranty, the other doesn’t if I recall. Also differences in rubber composition that only the designers understand. But most important is they may not wear the same, so DT will have to make that right.
