First Gen AC Rear Seat Delete

Sup fellas. So thinking my next project will be a rear seat delete. Amazing how much space opens up without the seats no one can actually sit on.

Removed the seats and came across these 2 plastic boxes on the rear wall behind the seats. I would like to remove them so I can make shelves/storage compartments there. Anyone know what they are and what they do? Hate to remove only to find out they serve a purpose. There isn’t any wiring to them and they’re empty inside.

 

Those I believe are the cab vents. There to help with ventilation and make it easier to shut the doors.

 

That explains the thin flap that opens only outward.

They are the ‘Exhausters’. Lets the Air Mojo Flow properly. If you block them off, then your HVAC System will not operate as efficiently.

 

Following. I am going to do the same thing. Putting in shelves and plat form for overland fridge. Please share what you come up with.

You can leave the top covers off and build around them. You may have already noticed how loud your truck is without the back seat, you can use sponge and cut little ice cube sized pieces to stuff in the holes to muffle it. It will still be loud but less loud, and will still allow air flow.

Depending on what/how you build and insulate, you could end up with a quieter cab...

 

Actually hoping it will be quieter. Ordered some sound deadening mats. Should be enough for the back and a good portion of the floor.

 

Sound deadening is good but finding a way to muffle those boxes will be key.

 

Will be taking your advice with the sponge as well.

 

My backseat is out, and perhaps it's because I added Noico, but I don't think the road noise is too bad. Definitely louder, but not to the point that it bothers me.

 

Noico is what I ordered. What’s that one bolt in the middle of the back wall? Anyone know if I can remove it?

 

Thats just there to start conversations. You should be able to remove it, I think it might be for adding baby seats or something. I removed the hooks and things that you see along the top of Erik's wall, I was planning to use those to secure a board but eventually threw the seat back in there instead.

Got the air flow box super covered. Also used the mat that was in there before as an extra layer.

Since no back seats, took out the seatbelts... one less rattle on the trails.

 

Progress report so far...

Finished with the prep work/sound dampening. Pretty time consuming. I was expecting it to be a 2-3 beer job but turned out to be a 9ish beer job. I did double it up tho and did a good portion of the floor. It’s quieter now than it was before which is nice. Makes me want to do the whole cab eventually.



Cut this little section off for a pretty even line for the wall shelving.



Here’s what the frame of the shelf looks like. Leaving the bottom open for air flow and think I’ll put a couple small vents on the shelf as well.



What it’ll look like eventually. I want to spray everything with Bed liner before putting it all together.



Pic of the top section. Shelves will be bolted on the bottom to the seatbelt bolts and the top will hold the shelving against the wall. 2 pieces, just easier that way.

 

Looking good! I am not following how you connected / will connect to the back wall? I have gone as far as sound deadening the back wall

 

The front section/face of the shelving is a little longer than the framing section.



The part that extends beyond the shelf framing will bolt on to the 4 nut sections the seatbelts would bolt to...




The top will hold the selves against the wall once bolted on to the wall...

Back wall shelf complete. I like how it turned out. Now for the base.

 

Voss, did you just drill right into the cab to attach that? I know you used the existing seat belt holes at the bottom right? What did you do up top?

 

Screwed into the existing holes on top section as well. Took out the hooks the seats would hang on and used those holes to screw the top into.

 

What's your connection plan for the bottom shelf in front of the one on the wall?

 

Haven’t completed the bottom section yet but there are existing holes where the current storage areas are I’m planning to use.

So far I got 2 mounting locations and wondering if 2 would actually be enough. Will use a bolt and locknut.

I’m worried about the attachment locations being too close to the latch openings. Work in progress, I’ll post more on base once complete/closer to completing.

 

I was looking at those holes too, but seemed somewhat thin, but I think still workable. I had made a platform that utilizes with the seat pulled up (bottom) and I connected turnbuckles to the hooks on the back seat, as well as d rings I added to the front seat bottoms (seat bolts) that I used to connect.
