Handgun Mount?

Anybody done a mod to put in a concealed handgun mount in their Tundra that is secure, but gives good and immediate access if/when needed?? I've seen the straps that go under the steering wheel, but they just don't look very substantial, especially considering the thinness of the plastic under the steering wheel. Ideas, experience and photos please.

don't put it under the steering wheel, we have knee airbags in the third gens, and you don't want a hunk of steel coming out in front of them. I just keep mine in my waist band. If its going to be a long drive i just pop it in the center console.

 

Haven't ordered one yet but Gum Creek Holsters has one that would fit well in the console, if you're looking for a more hidden application.

 

My thought process is that if my firearm is always in the same place I don't have to think about drawing it and that video is a perfect example. that guy was just driving down the road and by the time he had figured out what was happening he didn't have time to fumble fuck with a snap on the back of an holster under the steering wheel or get it out of his center console. Like I said I will remove it and put it in my center console for long drives because no one is going to car jack me at 70 mph, but as soon as I get close to my destination it goes back in its holster on my side.

 

There is a group that does an in vehicle firearm training that I want to go take. Everything is scenario based and done with live ammo from a vehicle.

Unfortunately for the most part the group is a bunch of wacko's that probably shouldn't have guns in the first place. but the training might be worth putting up with them for the day.

 

I posted this awhile ago and some had concerns with accidental discharge in a wreck but the Glock triggers are sound. God forbid that something bad happens to me; I know I have a chance to respond.

 

Thanks for the replies. My weapon, Ultra Carry 1911, is usually on my person, but even in a crossdraw position, it may be tough to get to if I need to. I have considered leaving my full frame 1911 in the truck all the time, but it would need to be completely out of sight when I'm not in the truck so as not to draw attention to would-be window-breakers. I was actually thinking of something very similar to the magnet mount shown above. Might explore that further.

 

The Glock 43 pictured above is my everyday carry. Placing the weapon in easy reach while driving accomplishes two things for me, one it provides a faster response action compared to drawing it from my body holster. Two is the simple fact of overall comfort while driving those long miles in the truck. Appendix or 4:30 position carry still gets old on the body even with comfortable seats. Be safe out there!

 

In my 07 and 11 tundra I used a modified fobus mounted with pan screws to the driver inside of console. Rarely used as I edc

 

As far as the exposed trigger thing goes, there are small pieces of fitted kydex that encompass trigger. That tiny "clam shell" is tethered to something, such as your magnet. When you pull the gun, the clam shell pops right off. Not much help in a wreck if the gun goes flying, but it can give you peace of mind otherwise.

 

I had a 2012 that had a plastic bezel along the bottom of the front seat. I drilled 2 holes and zip tied an unused holster right there. It was perfect! My 2017 has no plastic piece to attach anything to. Looking for an option like that on the new truck

 

I have the same thing in my '07. I took a fobus paddle holster (unused since I prefer blackhawk) and drilled out the rivets to remove the paddle, then screwed it in inside my console. Works beautifully and keeps the gun secure and protected.

This looks like a clean install. How does the gun attach to this mount?

 

I have the Tuffy Security Console. I put a magnet on the deck lid and when I get in the truck the Glock comes off my body and put on the magnet on the deck lid. Easy access and it doesn't slide around.

I've had a highway holster in mine. I love it. I have it zip tied to the frame of the seat and it doesn’t move it whatsoever.

It is just a frame that allows you to put whatever kind of holster you’d like. I have a XDs that I carry with a Ka-Bar TDI that runs closer to the seat belt release in case shit gets weird.

You can put this same mount in any vehicle without drilling additional holes which was big for me.

I actually really like this set up. I carry my xds in the center but I haven’t found a way to mount it, did you make that strap or did you buy it some where? Also can you see the nuts and screws on the outside where you screwed the bolts in? Here’s a shot from my last range trip (pardon the pun).

 

Firearm and reload in same place always. Range time is different than real time, and that Ooda loop factor will be kicking in during the big show. I'm either 1pm or 3pm always.

Check out phantom quick draw holsters. I think that's what Im getting. Just an idea. I like the way it puts one in chamber for you.

 

I made up a bracket and modified a Phantom quick draw (version 2.0) for my Tundra, surprisingly the velcro has been doing ok holding the mount. I am working on a 3.0 version but have a few other things to tend to right now.



This was version 1.0 that works great and was the best position for a quick draw, but was concerned about getting it a little higher for clearance of knee and knee airbag deployment.

I think this is the next thing i plan to tackle with my 3D printer. I have never found a solution i really like from whats currently available.

 

I'm all for personal protection. The holsters on the seat or console are great ideas, as long as they are used ONLY when you are in your vehicle. DO NOT leave a firearm in your car even if you THINK it's safe because no one can see it. If you have a heavy duty safe in your truck, and it's bolted down, then it makes a good temporary place to store it.

If you have a firearm stolen from your vehicle, then that is 100% on YOU. You just put a firearm in the hands of a criminal.

Is it too hard to remove it from your truck and take it inside at night? Too hard to lock it in a safe in your truck when you can't legally carry into an establishment?

I bought this on Ebay. It fits between the seat and center console. I attached it to my seat with velcro so it moves with the seat. Works great.
