Because these things tend to allow us access to Toyota Tundras (cash), gas prices (energy), and increased costs to producers (Toyota Aisin,Denso), I was wondering what steps some have taken here to maintain their investments in the market based on the economists ( non political types) concerns of inflation, higher gas prices, and a downward pressure the market is perceived to be under within the next 90 days. Was looking to compare notes. I diversified to about 80% high yield bond funds, 15% closed ended fixed income mutuals, and 5% and futures to convertible securities. Markets are in for some changes... Let's hear some ideas.

Just bracing for impact. I fully expect drastic correction in the market, spikes in fuel and electrical costs, and I don't see it being avoidable. It may not go great depression level, but I expect there to be massive market corrections in several markets *looks at housing bubble of '08* that are going to make times hard for everyone.

Not doing anything different. The mutual funds my advisor has me in are much more stable then the general market. I dropped less than the market did when it hit the fan last year and consequently recovered much faster. No reason to expect anything different going forward even though past performance is not a guarantee of future results.

I moved all of my stocks to fuel companies several months ago. I'm up about 150% thus far.

Time in the market beats timing the market.

All gains are unrealized until you sell.

Sunk costs should not be used to make future decisions.

I am in my 30s so I’m about 2/3 equities and 1/3 bonds/cash, excluding real estate which is just my house (paid off). I’m heavy on the cash side because I expect to get back into mortgage debt for a bigger house in the next year or two, and turning the existing one into a rental property.

In my 30’s. 100% stocks. I also expect a pullback in the next 12 months or so, but I just plan to ride it out. I have been expecting that since the recovery starting in April/May, and I am glad I stayed in 100%. My portfolio was up 30+% in 2020 and I would not have achieved that had I been more conservative at any point.

Unless you are an investing enthusiast - stick to basic strategies of diversification and buy to hold. But I too do love the discussion so keep it going!

Regarding a housing bubble, I'm curious how this plays out. Here in Colorado Springs they are forecasting local prices to increase in '21 by 10%! That might just be some slack-jaw "continuing the recent trend" analysis but I simply do not see how prices can continue to sustain their growth even over the next 12 months. My son is looking to buy a house later this year and I'm conflicted in advising him to save and hold for the drop or jump in now and try and get today's value from the market.

Great thread - I love hearing from the truck crowd around the virtual water cooler.

Allow me to poke the hive: where do you stand on cryptocurrencies?

I'm extremely in the middle: Major investment houses and governments will routinely poo-poo them as fantasy and always on the verge of collapse because they are VESTED in the future of their national currency and by proxy the US Dollar. Kooks will push that crypto is the future and that the controls exerted by nations can be circumnavigated with a secure currency not regulated by nations. I'm a skeptic as far as the stability of the currencies being produced but excited by the notion that countries, especially the US, will have to COMPETE to survive/thrive. I believe deeply in competition and I see crypto as a valuable means to drive competition in a broader market.

Some decent replies here. I had no idea any of you invested short of a lift and 35s lol. Energy scares the hell out of me and thus far green initiatives haven't helped energy or automotive sectors. While I too am in a good position real estate wise, I'm older, plan on getting a smaller home for cash out of state. We are pensioners with a strong monthly cash flow, so stockpiling cash isn't really an smart move...hence the original post. Additionally a small mortgage might prove beneficial. I guess the high yield bond market only puts your foundational reserves in jail for 90 days, but I'm no bitcoiner. I've dabbled in Nio and rode some March prices to their recovery price, but timing the market now seems like a bull fantasy. ECF is my play fund...I dabbled in PTY,PHK,PCI but that seems my safety limit.

An investment thread would be interesting. It's a potential tinder box, and if two members have a debate about what happened and excluded WHO did it we might be ok... But hey...what do I know..lol

I put a pretty good chunk of my portfolio in green funds. I know some will say it is a fantasy, and they have crashed before etc. but I work in the industry and believe the tech us caught up to the hype. In that area I am up about 100% in the last 12 months. Individual EV stocks are a bit to risky for me, as I believe many will crumble as the major players are stepping into the game. The suppliers behind those are where I am focusing. Plus solar and wind. Storage is the main squeeze point, so Lithium is where I focused there. Try to stay away from Cobalt type things because they do not agree with my worldview.

Crypto is also above my risk tolerance, but blockchain, the technology behind it, seems like a growth sector. I have some skin in that game.

There are always the ARK funds, which have performed admirably and many people believe in.

Great thread idea. Since the disruption started, one of my big fears was the restriction of foreclosure ruining the natural state of the property market. Anyone have insight on how this will continue to affect things if the foreclosure restrictions are extended?

Cost of housing is insane, and like you, I question the sustainability of the current prices given the overall financial climate. Low rates fueled a boom in purchases / refinancing, but with so many out of work and the near future financially questionable, I can't help but think a correction - or at least a pull-back - is coming. But, if I knew the future I'd have already won the Mega Millions jackpot and wouldn't have to worry about it.

And I'm LMAO at the guy who said "I didn't know any of you invested outside of lift kits and 35's!":rofl:

I'm just starting to dabble into individual stock ownership. No daytrading, looking for solid "buy and hold" strategies. My 401k and IRA's are set up pretty aggressive since I still have time to recover if needed, and my stock positions are very lightly funded for the time being as I learn more about it.

I too favor allowing economic/financial discussions so long as they remains on focus and civil.

I purchased a number of Bitcoins back in 2013 (as well as ETH). They're sitting on a ledger in an undisclosed location. The time to get into the big name cryptos is long gone as the returns will be negligible. Whether or not I believe in it's future, I know what it has done for me in the past 7 years. Chainlink is promising as it bridges the gap between crypto and big banks (they're all using it at the moment).

Lol good luck. Dumber shit has happened with crypto so far than a coin created as a joke exploding. Bitcoin can implode and take a 500% dip and I'll still be able to cash out in time and retire early. Got in dirt cheap off a tip from a nerd friend of mine. He's my hero now.

That’s a great one to have been in early on for sure.
I still feel for that dude who lost his computer hard drive that had like a few hundred million of mined BC on it. He was on the news again not long ago with some new scheme to get it back.

Good for you on the 2013 investment. Do NOT lose the password for your undisclosed location! Like many of you, I read something recently about the guy with over $200m in a digital vault was 2 password guesses away from being encrypted forever. I also understand billions have been lost similarly in Bitcoin never to be recovered.

I've dabbled in buying some crypto currencies and know a few folks that mine. I was fascinated by Bitcoin more than 10 years ago and wondered then about buying $1k worth just to see. It's just not wise to do that math at this point.

I'm going to read up on Chainlink...

Make sure you log in and update your Ledger from time to time. I have a Nano S that I had not used in awhile. It required a firmware update for me to access it. The pucker factor was high until I was able to see all of assets again!

I'm just hoping my retirement plans don't give me the middle finger salute as they head out of the window. The "correction" (spin-speak for crash) may ensure that I'm gainfully employed for many years to come. The promised higher taxes, off-shoring, and other fallout don't speak to a rosy future.
