Official Gas Mileage Thread

As I work for a state agency in a red state, the likelihood of me being off of work at all is very slim. As such, I'd prefer everyone else stay home and off the roads.
I'm just out here trying to make lemonade.

Disabling the automatic ac compressor engagement whilst using defrost or floor/defrost had an immediate impact on fuel economy.

Truck is still stock. But I feel better about what it'll do when that changes.

 

Avg. between 15.8 and 16.8mpg by straight math (no calculation for 3.3 % tire size difference). Mix of city and highway, no traffic jams, no unnecessary idling. Goes to shit when towing anything, 9-11mpg

not much extra gear, tool box in the bed with maybe 100lbs total.

Only engine mod is Flowmaster muffler with dumps
Engine has been maintained to a T. MAF cleaned, TB cleaned, Fuel filters, spark plugs, air filters etc. all kept up to date. Run full synthetic. All synthetic fluid in the diffs and transfer case.
Prior to the lift and wheel tire setup I once got 21.5mpg on a highway trip out in California from the central valley to Napa and back. 18ish with normal mix of driving.

Thread Revival!

I filled up last week and noticed the ‘Winter Gasoline Formula’ has made a dent in my mpg. Down City 1.5ish mpg. Or, maybe its the Cooler Island Temps?

 

I'm still averaging 10.2ish in town.....

 

I'm pretty happy with my MPG honestly. It's not good in the city but my last road trips have impressed me.

When we went to the Outer Banks a few months ago I had 2 adults, 2 big dogs, an entire truck load of camping gear and food, plus my loaded fridge. I still got 17.5 MPG on the way there and 16.5 on the way back. I also have a camper shell, rock sliders, skid plates and an aftermarket front bumper, and 285/70's. I can live with that.

 

4.7L AC, 2WD, stock sized Continental TerrainContact HT tires, no cap/cover, 87 octane fuel

I have been getting around 15.5 MPG ever since the temp dropped, 15.38 MPG on my last fill up (yesterday). During the summer I was getting around 16.5 MPG average, sometimes hitting 17 MPG when I didn't use the air conditioning. With that said, I usually keep it below 3k RPMs. Putting a cold air intake on soon (K&N) to see if I can get a few more MPGs.

 

93 Octane Report (first time using in long long long time):

Mostly City Driving short trips less than a mile each way. A little bit of Heavy Tow/Haul 15 miles round trip. Lots of morning idling. A little bit of fun and gun.... 12 MPG.

Truck feels peppy with the 93 so I filled up again with it today.

 

Drove it 5 hrs to elk camp and got 16.9 mpg averaging around 65-70 mph. Filled it up with winter blend fuel last weekend and did a lot of around town driving and got 12.2mpg

 

I was gonna complain about the mileage on my '06 DC 2WD w/ 58K miles on it . . . but after thinking about what I paid for it vs a new one, I'm happy as a clam at high tide lol. Once I go through the entire truck I'll report my numbers.

 

I'll take my 16.5ish mpg all day for the reliability of these trucks. It's a V8 truck for goodness sakes. More than capable, great low end grunt and good gearing for off the line work.

 

While I was doing things for science, I figured I could do another check with winter blend fuels. Same station/pump.

First was city only, lots of cold starts and I do use my remote start for a bit before leaving. I also did a trip that was mostly on a state highway with 55 & 65mph speed limits (about 70/30). Averaged 58 & 65mph respectively.

146mi/11.9gal=12.3mpg (100% city cold start)
130mi/6.8gal=19.1mpg (100% 58 & 65mph)

 

10-11 for me. City and short highway stints. Need to get on the highway and see what happens on a longer road trip...

 

Yeah. My MPG has dropped since the Island temps have dropped. Been doing lots of short trips under a mile. Last fill up was the worst I’ve seen coming in at 9MPG. Used to spend some idle time at warm up, but now I just get in and idle drift it to the location keeping under 1800 rpm.

 

I'm happy if I see above 12 right now.

 

16.5 over 12k miles. It has slight lift and is close to level. Currently wearing 255/70r17 winter tires. 85 octane and 5000-10000 feet elevation.

 

Update since I put my K&N cold air intake on... Getting 16.5 MPG (16.48 & 16.46 on my last two fill ups) combined city and highway with a few stomps on the gas here and there. Can’t get a CAI and not enjoy it a bit . Even with all that, I’m still getting a solid 1 MPG gain over what I had (15.5 MPG at best) with the stock intake. I’m betting I could get 18 or more HWY if I was easy on the RPMs.

 

When I installed a K&N intake, I did so right at the changeover from regular to winter-blend fuel. Even with more idling time and the ishtty fuel, I'm still averaging about the same fuel economy I had before.

 

Interesting. I noticed no difference in fuel economy when I put my K&N on.

2005 2wd DC with camper shell a 3/4 inch lift on the front end and El Cheapo aftermarket wheels and 265x70x16 tires, at 4,500 ft. altitude.

Seem to be averaging about 16 mpg in light city/highway (not freeway) driving. Can't complain, though I did average 19-20 in my Frontier 6 spd. manual under the same circumstances. I hope to get another mpg taking off the camper shell and installing lighter TRD Pro SEMA wheels with 255 width tires (debating on All Terrain or All Season).

11 mpg on a short towing trip, 5,500 lbs.

One of my early tanks I calculated nearly 20 mpg for all freeway driving (about 60-70 mph). Don't know how accurate that was since I was still learning how to fill up the gas tank consistently. After everything is done if I can get over 18 mpg going 70-75 mpg on the freeway, I'm happy.

 

averaging about 15.5 on mixed driving. if it's all city i'm getting about 13.75
4wd DC with 87 octane.

 

First time driving my commute with the Tonneau cover installed. I did see a slight improvement. I tend to drive in the right lane avg. 63-65 mph. Not to shabby for a TRD with big tires...
I’m usually in no rush..

 

Mine's still shit, at around 10-11 mpg. I can't understand how it runs so good and still gets complete shit for mileage. I'm betting my O2 censors are out of spec, and maybe the MAF is jacked as well. Checked / cleaned everything I could . . I even put 40 psi in my tires hoping it would roll easier, lol.
Stock 06 DC 2wd w/ only 59K miles on it and always maintained! Has a snug top . . . but that shouldn't be killing my mileage.
Oh well . . . I don't have a nasty-ass truck payment, so I've got that going for me.

 

Man that’s worse MPG than a ford.... something ain’t right

 

Usage? Lift/Tires? Lots of short trips & warm up idle time? Snug top should help mileage.

Also, check your fan clutch maybe it's failed/failing?

 

Getting worse ... 9.27 MPG last tank .....doesn't make sense.
100% city driving . . . but I'm not a kook driver.
Really trying my best to maximize . . . truck runs like a top !!!

 

Doing the same here. Winter Blend sucks. Been driving with lots of Spirit lately as the truck is peppy and running like a top, as well.

 

Cold temps, short trips & winter fuel w/ethanol. Sounds normal'ish.

When driving with light acceleration the instant mpg I see when monitoring is around 8 mpg +/- 2. With mild acceleration 4-6mpg. Only when cruising at steady speeds is it higher.

Worse mileage when you have tires larger than the smaller OE size of 245/75r16 (29.5"). Mine has 265/65r17 (30.6") which slightly hurts mpg. Elevation/location may also matter.


I use 87 octane. It's a little more volatile than higher grades. Unless the engine compression calls for it, no need to go higher.
