What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Previous owner didn't take very good care of the paint on this one. Playing with the buffer today and thought I'd try to salvage the badly oxidized paint. It's like a chalkboard. Did a little test patch and it turned out nice.
Verdict: paint salvageable.

Hood is probably too far gone. Planning to sand that down and spray-bedline it 'black' (at least 10hp gain).

Anyone ever taken apart a radiator fan clutch? Wondering if I can just put new oil in mine and call it good instead of paying the $130. Toyota doesn't sell parts for them, though, so if a spring or something is worn out I'm stuck.

Buy new. Last I checked the Silicone Oil was $60 for a bottle and then you are guessing exactly how much (based on Ambient Temp) and where. I took my old one apart for grins and it doesn’t look like the fun all the kooky guys posting doing it in 2004 on their brand new Tundras.

 

Alright, that's good to know. I bet not too many people have done so. Just bought a new Aisin one for $140, dang these parts are adding up. I'll just keep telling myself it's so nothing will break in the near future.

 

Yeah. I couldn’t believe my Timing Belt stuff cost around $1400 for all OEM once it was all added up. Two Shops wanted $3400-4200 for parts and labor for a TB ‘plus’ job. Rents too damn high!

In the end, you’ll be glad you replaced the parts.

 

As someone that has detailed cars in the past, I have to say that is really impressive. Amazing how much better that looks. I'm curious if the hood could be improved but it looks like the clear coat is leaving.

 

Got my OME/Toytec lift installed this weekend, really liking the new stance and ride! Anybody here ever run 255/85r16 tires on their rigs? I see a few threads were guys have put 285/70’s on, but I’m looking to stay on the stock wheels and be on the skinnier side of 33’s

 

That looks really good. Do you know the # on the 3Mkit that you used?

 

The clear just doesn't last on that red. If you're going to sand & spray the hood anyway, why not try to redo the clear. Maybe experiment with the roof first, I''m sure it's just as bad.
Anyone with the patience to bring back that fender should be able to get a decent result with the clear-coat.

Same thoughts here when I saw Glocks Pics last night. Looks good, but may not last. A can of clear coat on a test spot on the hood would be what I’d try before the Bedliner. If a Hand Model can do it, anyone can.

 

Are you sayin that hood could be brought back to red? I can give it a try... just not sure of the process. Lightly sand the remaining clear coat with an orbital, then apply a new clear coat?

 

I hear you there. I typically hand wax my vehicles once in the spring and once in the fall. Hopefully that'll be enough to maintain this one once I get it buffed out.

 

Hard to tell from the photo, but it kinda looks like the clear is off the fenders too. Seems like you brought back the paint, which is under the clear.
I am sure you could bring back the paint on the hood. Under the clear is the paint/pigment. If you don't go through that...
Remove remaining clear layer, or even feather it (some good video's on working with clear on Youtube), polish out the paint layer so it's all clear & pretty, then lay clear over it all to protect. Semi-annual wax to keep your clear healthy.

Bit of a rabbit hole, but have you read up on ceramic coatings? (bunch of excellent detailing threads & ceramic coatings threads here on T's.com.)

 

I don't know man... this thing's never gonna be a beauty queen. I think I'm gonna buff out everything except the hood and roof. That alone will take a few days. If I bedline the hood and roof I think they'll be easier to maintain and better protection. Initially I was going to bedline the whole exterior (Monstaliner spray red) but now that I can bring back most of it... I'm scaling back to just bedlining hood and roof (black for speed). It won't look terrible and will be a lot less work. The old girl has over 350K so I can't quite justify the full beauty treatment.

 

Looks great! Can you give us full details on the lift?

I haven't run the "skinny" tires yet, but when I eventually get new tires I'll run them, just the 17 version. They're really not that much skinnier than stock, and you're not stuck with an E rated tire.

 

I'd still try it. The results you got were so good it seems like it might be easier. You can get 2k clear in a spray paint can.

 

My next set of tires will probably be 255 85 16s to get a 33 inch but without the extra width and weight. Very intrigued about trying this size eventually

this is a new one for me. My brother was turning in the menards parking lot, heard a pop up front, and the truck dropped. I assumed LBJ failure, but it was actually the LBJ bolts. 2 had backed themselves out, and the torque caused the remaining 2 to snap.



He said it mangled his CV axle, but he happened to be in the menards parking lot for new bolts, and had one of my old CV axles in the back of his truck.

 

That is quite concerning. Those are the bolts I could never get my torque wrench to properly set. I've used the torque wrench since then on other jobs and it worked fine. I'm assuming this is what caused the damage to his fender? That really sucks.

 

yep. the wheel munched the fender.

 

Glad it was low speed it not worse, but still sucks. I put blue loctite on my LBJ bolts to help them stay in. But I still might throw a wrench on mine later today just to be sure.

What a find! I plan to find mine for cheap in a scrapyard, any part is universal if you're clever enough. Let us know how the installation goes!

 

I added loctite to mine too, but I think ill be rechecking the torque on mine this weekend too!

 

No kidding. As soon as I typed that response earlier I walked outside and made sure I had no missing bolts.

 

That's really unfortunate, at least it happened in a parking lot and not somewhere worse. I recently ordered new LBJs/LCAs and made sure to get all new bolts since they weren't that much. I'll definitely use loctite and pay attention.

 

My alignment guy also marked my all LBJ bolts with blue crayon last time I went in. I'd recommend y'all do that and check over time to make sure they're not backing out.
