SR5 vs SR5 TRD Sport -- Your thoughts?

Hey all. We're working through the detailed decision process and we're close to ordering a new 2021 Tundra. So far it's SR5, white/black, 4x4.

    Between these two:

    1) SR5 with Convenience Extra Value package

This CEV package ($1000) seems indeed a good value over the standard $995 package to get the electronic goodies (parking sonar and blind-spot in addition to center console, big gas tank, etc.). We use parking sensors all the time (less so the bind-spot).

Would plan to a wheel swap (black rims), small lift/level, color bumper covers/surround/bulge aftermarket (about $1000 for the chrome delete?)

    2) SR5 with TRD Sport Package with options

This will cost us $2400 more than the above option, but will get total color match, hood scoop, push-button start/smart key, LED lights/fogs, Blistien shocks, anti-sway bars, TRD mats, etc. We like our TRD Sport Sequoia a lot--the shocks are actually an improvement over stock for the road (95% of our use).

(I "think" I like the full white bumper better--the black center looks great too.)

Would do a wheel swap and level/lift as well, so that's close to a wash (although these 20" wheel might be worth a bit more).

BUT can't get the parking sonar and blind-spot...could do a Car Toys aftermarket for about $1000, but won't be like factory.

Either way, the wheel swap and lift/level is in the cards. The #1 gets is parking sensors, but #2 gets us a whole lot more that we'd have to add after.

I'm leaning TRD Sport, but thought I'd throw this out there and see what the collective thinks!

I would consider what mods you will be doing and select the best options. I'm an old guy, but most youngins select wheels and lift after purchase, so I would say that there is no reason to include any wheels/tires. This might save you some coin. As for the color match stuff, again up to you. I do not like that parking assist stuff, so I didn't get it but I got stuck with that lane sensor (damn beep-beep). My first choice was a TRD Sport in white after selling my 2015 TRD, but it sold before I could put my name in for it. In fact, my first 2 choices sold and I had to wait 3 months until found something with the items I wanted without paying too much.

The only things on the Sport that appeal to me are the colour matching and the rear sway bar. You can do the bar for about $200 so you have to decide if colour matching is worth $2200 to you. (Wouldn't be for me but YMMV.)

I just bought a SR5 4x4 without any packages and dont regret it.

All I cared about was sways, plates, a bench seat and no electronic BS like blind spot and such. Hell, I'm pissed I dont get a cd player.

I just put on 2 sway bars, grab handle on driver side and some skid plates for less than 900 bucks. The wheels and tires I will eventually upgrade and the shocks will get upgraded when they wear a bit. For me, color match and LED lights was not worth another 1800 bucks for the package. If your mechanically inclined in the slightest you can do all the TRD upgrades yourself and you'll learn alot about your truck. If your into the electronics, get that package because not really realistic to add that kind of stuff later.

I found some old dubbed CDs in storage. I had to go out in the cold and double check to see if I even had a CD player.....nope! Damn!

I spend my entire youth collecting cds and I finally get a forever truck and cant use it. My tapes are also going to collect dust. Black metal sounds way better on tapes compared to cds or digital. Maybe I'll break down one day and load it all on a flash drive for the truck.

I tried that but the only flash drive big enough to hold all my music can't use a format that's compatible with the head unit so I'm driving around with some of my music on half a dozen old flash drives I had around the house.

Not to mention that that the price difference is only the price tag difference. Doesn’t count the extra you’re paying if your financing. You can do more upgrades yourself for less than the price difference.... just sayin

I got a sr5 SX that looks bad ass. I put a sway bar on. I will upgrade shocks eventually and maybe go 20 or 22 inch tires eventually. It has 255/70/18.

Color matching will cost well over $1000. The grille and bulge will me the majority of that, and bumper ends are even more expensive. Also, why are you saying you can't get the parking sensors in a Sport? Are you in an area that they aren't available, or are you looking at a specific truck that doesn't have it?

I'm with you on the upgraded and sensors etc. Already added seats, grab handle, tires & rims (this weekend) and I'd fhe border ever opens up, I'll look to add RCI skid plates

As for the CD....maybe it's a Canadian thing, but my SR5 actually came with a CD player in the stock system.

What the heck? What year is the truck and did you get it at a dealer?

Do you have a pic? Maybe I can swap to a factory Canadian head unit lol

The CD player isn't a Canadian thing, it's a 2019 and older thing. They phased it out in 2020 when they added the carplay/android auto to the radio. No 2020+ has a CD player.

As you said, it has been fun adding and removing things with our son, doing things ourself and learning as we go. Before this truck, the most I ever did was put gas in. Everything else I let our garage do.

Here's a shot of our system. (The blue Tundra in the radio is TVD Vinyl, not stock).

That was actually a determining factor for me getting a 2019 instead of a 2020. I hate the phone apps for cars and didn't want them. I miss out on push button start, smart handles, and a little bigger screen. Fair trade IMO. Don't need the big screen and I do kinda miss the push button and handles from other vehicles I've had, but I've adapted to having an old school key well enough.

    Sorry for the derail, OP.

My youngest graduated college and took my vinyls after getting a record player for Christmas. I had to introduce her to the big headphones and coil aux cord set up.

The only music played in our house is on Vinyl. Has been that way for 15y or so now. Before that, it was bootleg d/l flac of live concerts burned onto CDR.

I still use wired headphones (Senheisser) with a 25' Grado extension. :bananadance:. One turntable upstairs and one downstairs. Nothing beats big cans and a wired connection.

I didnt want the push button either. I like turning the key and feeling the vibration come through my hand. Maybe I'm old school....

My dads Kia a few years back had a push button and every now and then it wouldnt work and he would be stuck for 20 minutes or so until it decided to work again. A key never fails.

Sorry OP, I guess it's still kind of relevant discussion lol....

Absolutely love my Sport. When I initially went Tundra shopping I had no idea the Sport even existed and was slightly turned off on the plastic chrome on all the trucks I looked at. After almost buying a 16 lease with 30k miles for $29.500, I ran across a new Sport for $37.500 and couldn't be happier. Yes, the 20"rims and Dueler tires are less than visually inspiring, but with the chrome delete, the 38.0 gallon tank, tuned shocks and rear sway bar in the package I can live with them for now. Truck drives like a creampuff with a beautiful V/8 stuffed under the hood. What else could you ask for? :)

My Sr5 SX msrp was 43900. The trd sport msrp was 47 and some change. Both 21s. I didn’t pay sticker but was still over 40k. You got a great deal at 37,500

Looks nice! We started looking at one of these...DC SX, very nice, but would have swapped the wheels for 20", so why pay for them? Also, SX is not an option on the CM, which is now our preferred flavor.

Correct, can't be configured on the website...confirmed by dealers. Frustrating that you could last year!

I was looking at bumpershez for $200...seems pretty reasonable if I need to go that way.

CDs? Man, did I post in the 1st Gen forum by mistake? :turtleride: :D

Actually I still have some CDs, but once I made the shift to Spotify there's no looking back (and I'm in the older but not yet senior discount crowd).
