I had an FJ Cruiser with no trans cooler. I towed a 2700# pop up camper 40 miles and you could smell the transmission, it got so hot. I now have a 2019 Tundra Platinum, no trans cooler, and tow a 6,000# Lance 2285 camper the same distance and absolutely no issues. No hot tranny smell, no warning lights. I have owned 15 Toyota trucks...7 Tundras, 5 4Runners, 2 FJs...they have all been virtually trouble free. I trust Toyota on deleting the trans cooler. BUT.....if I was towing 9,000# I may be a little worried.

    well yeah kinda...

More along the lines of question things with open mind. In a technical system there is usually more than one knob to turn to get performance you need.

edit: and also ...one engineer working on one aspect of a project might not have all the information available to support their view, take, or opinions on the whole system.

I too was literally “ that guy “ and was wrong. There was much more I didn’t know or was privy to that would have challenged my conception of a mass produced turbo engine for use in everyday passenger car and truck service.

Just to be clear, if he installs 2, 3, or 4 coolers then no wardrobe supplementation is required, correct?

The science, much like which engine oil is the best, is imprecise.

He's saying that a smarter process engineer, with big picture vision without getting get lost in the trees, fixed the problem created by a less capable individual. He could have saved his company megabucks from the outset. It's what management used to call an "elegant" solution; i.e. fixes a very expensive problem with zero expenditure. Those guys get promoted.

A reputation for high reliability is hard to build; losing it will be easier and quicker. Just ask GM. Better to have lived and died, than not to have lived at all. :D

I think what kanobi13 was getting at was the cooler was there before (07-18), but not needed now.

    I understood.

But, the cooler on earlier models was not a problem, at worst maybe it was over-engineered for reliability. If the NEW engineers are correct, and the cooler was a waste of money all those years, maybe they'll get promoted. Result is pending.

Is the human progress of technology and knowledge. That is 13 years ago. Electric cars were tested documented as early as early 1900. Not until now where they are feasible and technology matured.

people back then thought there was no way hundreds of tons can sore through the air like a bird.

The next thing is AI. It’s already here, but the question when will they become self aware... :monocle:

Personally I think Toyota installed the cooler for the 207-18 for those that do heavy towing . When the Tundra was redesigned for 2007 it was designed to compete with the big three. Watch some of the old Tundra commercials. It was advertised as having bigger better brakes, more HP and better towing capability. The cooler was a must have at the time even though a small percentage actually needed it. So in 2019 Toyota took the opportunity to remove it when R1234YF was made mandatory.

Question: if you buy a towing package on a 2021, does it not come with a transmission cooler on it?

You only have one option 5.7l engine which comes with towing package and that is without the external cooler

It comes with a warmer which Toyota changed the name of the part to cooler in 2019 then removed any mention of it from the window sticker in 21. No external air cooler.

I’ve got over 1000 miles on my ‘21 now. Had several errands to run today and drove a total of about 150 miles. Drove the shit out of the truck. Floored it several times and held it a couple. My transmission did not explode! Not only that, I had no warning lights come on. No issues at all. WTF Toyota!

Makes sense since the fluid is moving around faster. My trans temps go down when I floor my truck or drive it hard. Now hook up 8k lbs and floor it going uphill.
