    Hello all,

I have an '18 SR5 Double Cab with 6' bed. The max TW is noted as 1020lbs. I've installed the TRD Pro anti sway bar and 2" leveling blocks. I realize those don't matter in this question, but just so you have the full picture. I am installing the Firestone 2445 air bags, and the Daystar cradles. I haul a 40' travel trailer w/ GVW at 10k. The weight on the tongue is about 15-1600lbs due to onboard W/D, Gen, additional battery and storage in the pass trough compartment. I use a Weigh Safe WDH and tow the trailer infrequently, but sometimes for 1k miles +. The trailer loaded is not over the 10k gross. I try to never tow with anything in the tanks unless absolutely necessary.

My question is this: With the increased tow/haul capacity that the bags add, is there any reason that additional TW would be cause for concern of failure at a structural level on the factory hitch.

You are way over your payload capacity. Time for a smaller trailer or a bigger truck.

2018 Tundra, which boasts a towing capacity of up to 10,200 pounds, when equipped with the 5.7-liter V8 engine. 2018 Tundra and its maximum payload capacity of up to 2,080 pounds. I have that engine and these are the official specs for my specific trim level.

Air bags do not increase your towing capacity. If you're tongue weight is already at 1500lbs+ the GVW is irrelevant. You've already acknowledged the max tongue weight is 1020lbs. I'm not sure why you're asking if there is risk of structural failure. Of course there is significant risk given that you're already 50% beyond the MAX tongue weight. You have the wrong tool for the job.

Sorry. Wrong terminology. They have a 5k load capacity. In turn, they can be used to help with squat due to increased load weights taking pressure off the leafs.

I am asking because I am wondering if there is anyone out there that has run into any similar situation and what they may have done to help mitigate. The truck has been customized and is my total dream truck. The trailer landed in my lap via a giveaway contest back in September. Therefore, Im just trying to make it work. I have talked with some techs @ Toyota that all agree the increase in TW should not cause much of an issue the way the truck is currently set up and with the additional steps taken for weight distribution and suspension upgrades. I also upgraded the tires to allow for more weight.

Playing with fire trying to haul that with a Tundra IMO. I get that you love your truck, and the trailer was a giveaway, but it's not worth risking your or someone else's life over.

Sorry man your question is so out of the ballpark it seemed fake. You need a 1 ton truck for that trailer. End of story

You need to check the sticker inside the driver's door of your truck for your actual payload capacity. Anyone who told you any Tundra has over 2000 lbs is flat out lying.

Maybe sell the trailer and buy something else?

No upgrade will help you mitigate the fact that you're 50% over the max tongue weight. It is unsafe to tow that trailer with a Tundra. PERIOD.

    Do tires allow more weight?

I thought they just have a higher weight rating. Doesn't change a thing about how much your truck is rated for. IMO you're way over a tundra's capacity. Nothing you can do to improve what the truck is rated for.

Right, They don't "allow" for more weight, just a higher capacity rating as the tires would likely be the first to go with an overloaded TW. The only capacity I am over is TW. Even with the additional TW, it doesn't put me over GV(C)WR or payload capacity. Just on the tongue.

What's the sticker on your door say for payload capacity?

EDIT: What state are you driving in?

    Not enough....
I mean, yes the truck could probably handle it. But I wouldn't want to tow that 1000+ miles for multiple reasons. The hitch itself will probably be fine, and realistically the truck can handle it, but there is zero way you can actually increase payload. In fact, the airbags technically decrease you're overall payload due to increasing the weight of your truck, just like passengers, gas, luggage etc.

I would look at trading that trailer in for something with a little less pin weight if you want to keep your truck. Just to stay safe on the road, and to stay within legal limits. My friend got some nasty fines just from overloading the bed of his F-150 with drywall. Those fines were not cheap.

I am glad you understood what I was going for. I can redistribute the weight to bring TW more in line with Manuf specs. to tow within limits, and I do, especially when on the longer trips. The basis for my question was more along the lines of "in certain circumstances", but not for the long haul. The way I do it now is take the gen off the tongue and go with minimal propane in the tanks to lighten that up, along with taking gear and putting it in the back of the trailer to offset the balance. With the WDH the truck and trailer do sit at the same level with no real visible squat when in combination.

Asking about the hitch misses the bigger picture. Load the truck and trailer up as you would tow (including fam in the truck) and go to a truck scale.

    - if you are over the rear axle rating, then I’d be concerned about failures of anything related to that area. Tires, wheels, lugs or other axle components.
    - If you are over the GCWR then there is an overall safety concern as you don’t have enough truck for the weight.
    - Independent of all of that, I’ve towed a 30’ trailer (8,500lbs) with a F350 crew cab long box...the big mofo... and still had “tail wag the dog” situations with winds. IMO, you don’t have a long enough or heavy enough truck to tow a 40’ anything.

Not a safe tow in any way with a Tundra.

But, there are plenty of folks that tow and haul WAY over safe margins. And if you ever get involved in an accident overloaded = easy lawsuit as everyone wants to sue for cash these days. And God forbid, if someone gets hurt because of overloading or an unsafe tow.

Like others said, airbags don’t increase payload. They actually put more weight on the rear axle that it might not be able to take. And no tundra out there (maybe a rcsb) has a payload over 2k. Check your door sticker. New tires also decrease the payload as well if they weigh more than stock.

You’ll never get that trailer within specs on a tundra.

Be VERY careful with moving weight back in the trailer to try to lower your tongue weight. That's a recipe for disaster if you over do it.

My RCLB has over 2K Payload capacity but just over and the only Tundra with higher capacity is a 2wd version.
So we still have not heard what your exact model and payload capacity is but I doubt it really matters anyway?

You are way over the capacity of the Tundra with this trailer I think.

I moved from the Bay Area to the Portland metro with a 2006 F350 Diesel coupled to an 8.5' x 24' 10K with a weight distribution hitch. I could never imagine doing that any any 1/2 ton however you equip it. Granted, there are quite a few grades to deal with; but you still have to stop and steer. I made five runs with 11-12 hours each way.
