Dang, so lots of us here on the left aide got hit. Glad you all are safe and the homes and trucks are not damaged.

I heard a tree or huge branch drop overnight. I “knew” it prob took out the fence we installed a few years ago. Turns out it was a 10-12” diameter branch dropping onto my neighbor’s roof. Hard to tell, but I think it broke thru. Bummer.

We're pretty well sloped up where I'm at, so our creek is raging but still well within the banks. The river down in La Center is pretty well spilled over.

    Ouch. Hopefully not too bad.

Just down branches by me. So glad my neighbor got his 160 foot trees cut down this summer. I have no cleanup in my back yard now.... weird.

Still no power. PSE isn’t even telling us when it will be on. Such is life.

I’m assuming you don’t have a backup generator?

    might be worth thinking about....

Nope. I had a honda for years and got tired of it needing to be serviced. We don’t lose power that often and it has been a decade since we lost it this long.

I understand. Fortunately, I had a plan when building this place. Have a 500g propane tank feeding the home and I tapped a “T” on the line to power a dual fuel 10kw generator. With propane the carburetor stays clean. I can probably run for 2 months with the power out.

We’ve talked about a generator a few times, but it happens so rarely for us that I just haven’t been able to justify the cost.

Turns out the tree that fell was actually two bitter cherries coming out of the same stump...funny thing is the root ball is still under the ground...the whole thing just sort of slumped over in the mush. It also took out the top of a dead-standing alder and brought that down with it - some 5” diameter widow-makers sticking straight out of the ground around it all.

Also had an 8” dia branch out of a big old maple drop on the other side of our yard - saw that this afternoon when I came home. Thankfully, the “at risk” trees in/around our chicken coop all came down in the storms we had LAST spring.

I get this. I have one alder that is pretty sick, I’m planning to get the top 2/3 cut off so that any chance of damage is reduced!

For whatever reason, I’ve been drawing up designs the past few months for my dream retirement home. Although I haven’t penciled in a lot of details, it will have an “alternative power source”. I’m still 12-15 years from retirement so I’m hoping a nice solar array and large battery bank is all I’ll need. But a big propane tank is an excellent idea too...if they haven’t been outlawed by then.

62 degrees in the house. Think I’ll be throwing out a lot of milk and cheese tomorrow

We've got 500-gallon propane tank as well. Feeds our gas cooktop and our tankless water heater. I've thought about adding solar, but our property layout and house design aren't ideal for it. Might still go back to adding a backup generator some day.

    That's awesome, you're prepared.
We lose power quite a bit in the winter. When I wired my house, I installed a sub panel with a 60A transfer switch to a outside Gen plug.
Just the essential circuits in there, fridges/freezers, one main lighting, couple outlet circuits with of course the fiber/TV on it. :D
We went with a wood stove over a fireplace too.

Yep, similar here. Home is all propane; water heater, stove, furnace and a little gas fireplace in the living room.
West Oregon Electric is notable for outages. Didn’t really want to spend the money on the solar. Not a big fan.

Woke up to a cold house again. Was 58 degrees in the living room. Kids are at grandma's for cookies and wifi (and school) and the wife and I are starting to dump stuff from the fridge. PSE is telling us late Saturday at the earliest, so we're packing up and bugging out. Eff this crap.

Got three iphones, one ipad, three small battery banks, my ReadyLight and a large Goal Zero battery pack charging in the truck right now. Plus it's my office. Truck is nothing more than a fancy generator right now, burning 0.40 GPH.

Fun tip...I learned that if you lock the truck with the key instead of the fob while it is running, the fob is INOP until you unlock again with the key. Slick...so I can lock the truck and not worry about someone taking it for a drive.

Unless you're "all-in" from an environmental perspective, solar is a hard business case in our region. Costs are high and the sunlight is low. And that ignores the storage issues. I'm hoping the tech catches up by the time I've got to make a decision. That and I plan to be out of state by then and anywhere is better than here for solar. But a propane tank large enough to last me a year would be ideal...

I bought a dual fuel generator a few years ago. Previous: My old gas generator was running and I noticed a slight drip from the peacock. I went to wrap some tape around it, .... it self disintegrated and the gas came flowing out onto my pant leg and boots, some how I did not ignite. I was next to the water spigot so I turned the gen off and dosed it with water. I’m a believe In propane for generators for sure.

I’m building a new home, no gas pipe link, so propane it is. Being off the grid has some advantages.

The existing natural gas is dirty, so you have to be on top of the furnace maintenance.

I've never heard of the NG being "dirty" nor had any issues. Interesting. Wonder if it is a local issue or something I've somehow avoided all these years...

Although my 10kw is dual fuel, I will NEVER use gas in it. Propane doesn’t go bad and the carburetor stays clean. Can’t beat it!

Sorry to hear about your troubles. Losing food is a pretty expensive hit. Hopefully they can get your power up soon.

When still working in AZ, I was involved with quite a few high profile solar projects. Are you familiar with LEED?

Looks like we lost a fridge full of food and that’s about it. Two trash bags. Our full-size freezer was still solid, so running a neighbor’s generator now to chill it back down. Should be fine then for another two days.

I’ve heard about LEED...but never read up on it.

My old NG furnace, which I did not ever have a maintenance schedule, would get plugged up per the furnace tech. I remember one cold winter night years ago, when the furnace was not working, the guy came out, looked at it, pulled out a paper clip, straightened it, proceeded to clean the orifice. $85 later he was on his way. Now I pay the $120 per year for the high tech NG furnace to be maintained.

I think it’s a local problem wrt dirty NG.
