OK I’ll play along. I speculate that I won’t buy a 2022 Tundra. Not because I don’t think it’ll be a good truck but because I’m not going to buy another truck until I get my ‘21 paid for.

I read so much about this and I always thought to myself, if I spent that much time towing, why would I be in the market for a 1/2 ton pick up?

 

Thats legal jargon that reads like a road hazard warning and not a mechanical warning

 

Not downplaying it in any way but a lawyer helped write that statement in my opinion. No 1/2 ton pickup is “designed” to be a tow vehicle is all honesty. And quite frankly if you towing upwards of 7k, ESPECIALLY for long distances on a regular basis...the Tundra really isn’t the right vehicle no matter how good they are. But I do realize your post is directed more towards a previous post...

 

Here is the same page from the 2018 manual. It says the same thing. I wonder if 3/4 or 1 ton truck manuals say something different? Aren’t they all registered as passengers vehicles? I’d think to say a truck was designed for towing it would probably be a commercial vehicle.

So what's the verdict? I drive my Tundra to work every day, 5 miles each way on level ground at speeds up to 45-50 mph, and generally have to stop for 4 to 5 stoplights. However, I do park on the 4th level of a parking garage, so how much extra strain do you think that puts on my transmission? Should I install an aftermarket cooler just to be safe?

 

Lemme answer your question with a question: are you wearing Nomex undergarments?

If you dont install a cooler, or five of them, you should supplement your wardrobe.

I could see OEMs testing them hard, but as hard as Whistlindiesel? That'd be tough (although I could still be wrong). Have you seen his videos? Its where trucks go to die lol

 

FR underwear? If the refineries ever make me wear FR underwear im going to be pissed. Mainly because they'll probably cost 30 bucks a pair. I spent 500 bucks a week ago on 3 pairs of pants and 2 shirts.

 

I worked at an OEM for a number of years before jumping to O&G industry. My roles were numerous but one was to support the design of a camshaft cap (and oil flow through it) on a given engine. This same engine was going to eventually be turbocharged.

I was "that guy". Cast pistons? Powdered metal rods? over 10:1 compression? 87 octane? And forced induction? What a colossal joke. I honestly didn't think it'd make it through durability testing. It not only made it through durability testing it went on to be a successful engine.

I eventually learned (and what is pertinent here) is that even I didn't know about finer details of the above parameters that can be changed in engine design, powertrain mapping, and manufacturing to support the power, durability, and other goals of the engine platform.

Another example from my current role...

I worked for years with mechanics, operators, and process engineers trying to get a blower to live longer than 2 months without the oil getting saturated with water. This unit cost the plant about $2million in repair costs over a 9-10 yr period. Many safety issues from it coming apart as well.

Based on history and other experiments (dozen or so...) I ran with operators and mechanics, I was ready to recommend a complete application change to management. Big money on top of big money spent keeping the thing running for the past few years. This was a true design defect from the company that designed this particular section of the plant.

A new process engineer was assigned to the project. He calls me up one afternoon and tells me that we don't even need the blowers. I was like..."come again??"

It turns out raising the pressure on an upstream column 5 psi would produce the pressure needed and have minimal downsides to processing efficiency. No blower needed. We tried it for 6 months and it was a smashing success. We are now 1.5 years into this change with only a bit more water to manage in a downstream sulfur unit.

I knew the blowers made very low DP. What I didn't know was that I had any variables open to me outside of the blowers themselves.

 

So your saying just because something was there before does not necessarily need it?
