In the end, who Really cares. We all know Toyo can't afford more than one engine choice for the tundra, taco or 4runner. It has to have one that fits all of them, sucks but if you don't like it don't buy it, lots of other car makers coming out with better trucks, electric trucks, toyo is getting left behind, boo hoo...

After reading that article, I'm more excited about the GR Corolla and Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing.

Haha, can’t afford in what way? Toyota is the most profitable automaker in the world, as well as the second largest?

The Tundra, 4R, and Tacoma have NEVER had the same engine, and they have sold a ton of Tacomas and 4R that haven’t had the same motor for a few years now.

Toyota has also been very clear that they feel hybrids and solid state batteries are the future. They have the largest selection of hybrid models, and will surely be bringing it to their truck based products with the redesigned 2022 Tundra and redesigned 2023 4Runner.

Then are poised to be the world leader in EV’s based on the huge advantages of solid state batteries vs. lithium and graphene batteries.

I believe he was referring to only one engine option per model. I’m assuming you can still get the 4.6 in the Tundra, technically there are two options! (Only one real one though) ;)

"Moreover, Toyota will finally get rid of its V8 engines and instead use a 3.4-liter turbocharged V6"

ugh, that statement doesn't excite me

Looks like 2019 was the last year of the Tundra 4.6, you are correct.

Could be they’ve NEVER had the same engine because they’ve NEVER been on the same platform before ?

The Tundra, Tacoma, and 4Runner all ran the 1GR-FE 4.0 V6.
    Tundra 2007-2010 VVT-i
    Tundra 2011-2013 Dual VVT-i
    Tacoma 2005-2015 VVT-i
    4Runner 2003-2009 VVT-i
    4Runner 20010-2020 Dual VVT-i

So from 2007-2009 all 3 ran the VVT-i version of the 1GR-FE. The Tundra and 4Runner got the updated Dual VVT-i but not the Tacoma

I thought he meant one engine for all 3 (which he later confirms), but totally see what you were saying too. They are almost there now with the Tundra only in 5.7, 4R only in 4.0, but you can still get the 4 banger in a Tacoma or the 3.5 V6.

Totally didn’t know they still offered the 4.0 early on in the 2nd Gen Tundra, thought it was 4.7/4.6 or 5.7 only. Good call, and thanks for the info!

Platform is super ambiguous tho, and lots of options for expanding a platform for different models / uses. From what I’ve read, the platform will be basically modular, then build out from it for each model.

All manufacturers utilize shared frame or platform for a bunch of different vehicles, with a wide range of different engine options specific to each vehicle.

Yeah the 4.0 was the fleet truck/ cheap truck option. I can only imagine how much of a pig it was with that motor

It’s barely adequate in my 4R Pro now with a pedal commander. Can’t imagine it in my Tundra!?!?

I’m either likely to get the new tundra or a gmc AT4 6.2

im trying to tell myself I can be happy with a turbo 6, it’s not working so far . Maybe that changes when I can drive one

but damn , that means no V8 throat on a truck . Hmmmm

I wonder if they will truly only offer 1 motor and that only motor would be a turbo 6 hybrid deal . If they go that route I hope they offer the built in generator like Ford just did , that looks nice !

    More than a few.....
Probably have a tiny engine with turbos and a 10 speed. No thanks. It's a truck not a little rice rocket. Who wants a high stress motor in a truck anyway? Just dont understand people nowadays. Wait a few years with those new style engines when those turbo seals go out and saving 3 mpg wont sound nearly as good....

I specifically went for the tundra because it's a dinosaur. That's the only way you get reliability in my book. If only this thing had a manual tranny, I would probably ask to be buried in it.

My 2017 Platinum Pro is almost paid off. I’ve ploughing far too much money into tasteful upgrades and getting it 75% to where I want it...
I’m realizing “Silver Sancha” is too nice of a truck to run an HVAC side business out of. Next Tunny is gonna be an 8ft bed and regular/double cab in Silver to match. I’ll probably lease a 2022 base model with 8ft bed when they finally drop...

Feels like Bizarro world waiting to hear that Tundra has gone V6.

RAM just dropped a Hellcat into the TRX, just like they said that they would do over a year ago when it got green-lighted. Don't think telling everyone it was coming hurts the brand or excitement at all. Looks like Ford, as rumored, is going to drop the 5.2L Predator from the Shelby GT500 into the next Raptor. GM carries on with 6.2L and released the best towing engine in the half ton class with 3.0L Diesel and best looking Truck in the Class with the AT4.

I'm rooting for Toyota, but this is why I don't think Toyota has anything. We didn't have to look hard to see all these others coming. Why don't we see the new Tundra and all we hear about is a miserable V6 TT. If it does, they will have waited until 2022 to come up with a 2013 truck. If it doesn't have a V8, it is DOA.

But even more problematic, what if you own a V6 Raptor, I'd dump it now before the new one is announced. Those resale values are coming to screeching hault.

    ^^^^^This

Toyota has their work cut out for them. My guess is it'll be AT4 for me. And I hate GM, almost as much as I hate Ford. But damn Toyota, Ram just dropped a Hellcat into the TRX and they still make plenty of the 5.7 Hemi. GM still does plenty of the 6.2L. Ford puts 5.0L Coyote in a few trucks, but is about to drop the 5.2L Predator into the Raptor because they finally realize the ecoboost is total crap for a fullsize truck after 8 years of production.

So, build a 550 horsepower, 550 ft-lbs tourque V8 Tundra, or don't build crap, because I will be driving something else. And you should build trucks based on what I want.

You're not going to wait for the 6th gen 4R? It should be out sometime in the next decade... :rofl:It's driving the 4R guys bonkers in their forums that there are rumors, but not even sketchy spy pics of a 6th gen yet.

At least we have spy pics of the new Tundra!

As for the original topic, I don't know. Most likely not, but never say never. I really like how my current Tundra drives. It's more basic than the competition, sure, but that's what I find appealing. I don't need gadgets to fuss with while I'm driving, and I don't like all the gimmicky fuel saving efforts and computers trying to figure out my driving style and how to optimize efficiency no matter the situation. When I push the gas I want it to go, if I give it more gas I want it to go faster. KISS. I just need a solid truck that is pleasant to drive and always gets me there, and I currently have that.

THIS. Sounds about right. My '02 went 17 years and was still going strong when I bought my'19 and sold it. I'm thinking 2039. I'll be 80 and revisiting my needs I think at that point. Like when I bouight the '19, should have some money saved from all the years without car payments to just about pay for whatever comes next. My '19 is paid, has been for over a year because of my '02. If I jumped on any new shiny like a kid with 'big eyes' I would be in debt. Gotta live in reality; I work for the state at a school in IT and I aint getting rich there...

It can be done, but it takes more restraint than my family has. Get a small/basic trailer while packing light and you can keep it within the payload.

If the safety rating on 2022 goes up, I will trade it in. Otherwise, not worth it.

S**t my budget barely allows the 2013 I have. The new gen will probably roll in with a base price in the high 40’s so as much as I will probably want a the new one, I don’t see it happening. I honestly don't know how folks are able to afford the vehicles they do now a days.
