For those with Decked/Shell/extra weight, what's your rear setup?

I think part of it is that the load is pretty well distributed over the axle overall most of the time but I have not pulled my heavier trailers while setup like this either,though my heavy trailers are not all that heavy either.

 

And as I was thinking about following your route @NoRcptn I forgot you have a lift as well. Which complicates some things more than I need to. Not planning to lift mine so I think my positive experience with RideRites on my Tacoma I am going to pull the trigger on the decked and riderites... Boom. Thanks Tundras.com for taking more of my money... If you're gonna spend might as well spend wisely.

 

Nope they miss the whole slider straight to the ground. Plenty of grip if you just use it as a step smh. Apparently they forget the truck is higher than most vehicles. It happened to me a couple of times when I first got the 285/75r18 on the truck. I try not to laugh, none of them have hit the ground year but their is a pronounced stumble.

 

I wonder what your payload number is compared to a CM, the CM has a dismal payload capacity stock. Not that you can change the official payload with suspension but you can make it handle a heavy load better.

Here she is with the Dobinsons 2.25” front and rear. Tires are 285/75/r18 for reference. The rear spring is the heavy load
L59-121-R. There is an estimated 5-600 extra pounds on the girl in this pic. Sliders, bash plate, Groceries and some lawn fertilizer in the bed. Think I can add that rear bumper with minimal sag

 

Skey44– I like your setup!

I am studying up for my own suspension upgrade- curious whether something similar will work for my 2021 DC. I’ll be installing a Leitner ACS Rack, Decked System, plus sliders, and will occasionally tow some heavy stuff. For now I’m planning to keep the stock wheels/tires, probably move to 285s when I wear out the first set of tires.

Any further advice or tips for someone following your route? Would you change anything? Any need to consider a rear sway bar when loaded? Cost estimate?

 

Thanks! I’m very happy with the suspension system for my needs.
I would do the medium duty springs for a softer ride when unloaded if I didn’t have the slide in Fourwheel pop-up camper. With the heavy springs I feel no need at all for sway bars. It’s stiff as hell, even with the camper in! So for most overlanding and towing applications I’d go with their lighter rear spring option. Don’t go by the pounds they list as they don’t have the tundra in Australia so they don’t know first hand I don’t think, just estimating. MainlineOverland in NH helped me choose. They install a lot of these so they know the applications really well. Just call them and ask. They’ll usually do a little discount too if you’re nice about it. There’s also a thread about Dobinsons suspension if you wanna see what others have done. I think they have a new front coil option since I purchased mine too.
Ballpark the lift and install set me back about $2500. I paid a local mechanic shop to install the springs and shocks and do the alignment. Think they charged me about 8hrs or around $1000. The tires were almost $1300 (5 tires) Installed by the same shop iirc. I originally didn’t install
the rear springs Just the shocks with a 1”block. The shocks work much better with their springs. One thing I’d have done differently for sure is get 17”rims and 285/75r17 for the completed look and slightly smaller diameter and lower unsprung weight. There ya go these things were a beast to move around and they required signature on drop off FYI

 

@Skey44 youve got me reconsidering my plans haha. With the amt of lift the off-the-shelf leafs offer, I'd have to swap to stock-length shackles, but lifting with springs is better and running shorter shackles would prevent further flattening from them too.

 

Stock suspension with sway bar rides beauty with 800lb ish, but finds the bumps pretty hard from time to time.

I could care less about a lift so airbags seem to be my only option, unless someone has another suggestion?

 

I figured out that the bumpy ride I was experiencing when loaded before the leaf pack was due to riding on mostly the overload springs. They are extremely stiff and when you’re into them with the load the bumps can be horrendous. @Warreng you’re definitely on your overload leaf in the attached pic.
Yeah airbags are an option for no lift. You can do a custom no lift leaf pack which you don’t really need but would ride really nice I’m sure. Also Timbren/sumo is good for occasional heavy loads and don’t have the potential for failure and maintenance associated with an airbag system. You could also do add a leaf which is really popular with the Tacoma crowd not so much here. And there’s helper springs which my local off-road shop swears by (I don’t like him overall though and give him minimal business due to his grossly overpriced service and my way or the highway attitude. Honestly I think dentists mostly get their trucks worked on there). My skid and slider fabricator also has made for himself and offered to make me a custom pack by cutting up and combining multiple stock tundra leaf packs. He did this, Kings, and a TRD rear sway bar on his and says it’s on rails. Falcon (terraflex) makes an adjustable shock that is marketed to improve towing manners.

 

i had hellwig helper springs on my gen1, same bed load, with the minimum recomended tension and They worked for me, but people here seem to hate them.
Getting springs shipped to Canada is way too much money, the timbrens sound interesting.

 

Sounds like the helper spring is a good option for ya. No hate here.

 

Call me crazy but I still think the trd wheels are some of the best looking out ther.

 

Airbags are an easy way to go for an occasional load.

 

Where in nor cal are you? I would recommend sac spring. https://sacspring.com/ they do awesome work. I had custom leaf packs made with 4 inches of lift and made to hold more weight. They are one of the only shops left that hand forges every thing. Just tell them what you want hight and weight that you plan on carrying. I got to hang out and watch the make my leafs. It was pretty cool to watch. I'm very happy with there work and customer service.
This is 4 years later. 2 boats, 1 10hp outboard, 4 large deep cycle batteries, 1 yeti 65 full of beer, and 10 days worth of food, camping and fishing gear.

@Skey44 Thanks for the details. As chance would have it I am located in NH and from your mention just discovered MLO is 1.5hr from home. Hoping I can pick up my order, or maybe have them install. Definitely leaning toward the medium leaf based on your experience. Any issues with your TSS reacting to your mods?

BTW i did the same- went for the TRD Off-Road for lights, wheels, and 38gal tank. I thought about immediately changing tires/ wheels, but I really like them and don’t plan on running any bigger tires than what you have.

I haven’t but according to these forums it’s seems like some really dig the options on the icon and some haven’t had good luck. But the price isn’t bad for the RXT and the variability you have with those is tempting.

Thanks buddy. I made it out of unistrut and scrap steel from my wife's old treadmill that she ran into the ground. I had it bedlind at truck modderz. Just pull two pins and the two 140lb gas struts lift the rack and boat. It makes it way easier to access my bed when the boat is on the rack.

 

Make them and sell them. You'd prob do well on this forum alone. That's cool.

 

So far I only have the topper and the linex and it still feels great, actually even more stable that when the bed was completely empty but it might change once decked and RTT + other gears are in there.
Could you share where you've seen people not having good luck? I haven't found it
