What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

100% hated that molding. Removing that was a huge time suck and why my prep took so long but really glad I did it and highly recommend the 3M eraser wheels to anyone taking on the task. It did more in hour than days with solvents and a scraper did.

Also glad that I filled the holes proper instead of doing the Aluminum tape like so many guys do. No weird edges popping through the liner to be annoyed at!

My only regret is not cutting down the bedside before doing the liner. Once i did it the quarter panel just looks HUGE. May have to try breaking it up with graphics or something.

Badges are gonna get shot with black liner with the (updated) grille, bumpers, and maybe Mirrors. Took the badges off of the Taco first time I painted it and have always regretted not putting them back on.

 

@Siebler you can pull the front bumper and get rid of the plastic top and bottom sections. Some guy did it here and it looked a lot better, but you have to make a skid plate kind of thing for the very bottom. Here he is https://www.tundras.com/threads/custom-bumper-update.50711/

Not long after I saw it done here, I saw a guy with it done in person. It made me a little jealous that I don't have that front bumper.

I saw a guy use "molding for a 2012 Chevy extra cab, 056 Toyota paint in an aerosol can, clear coat, and painted the molding to match." and it looked pretty good. Better then stock

 

Sean Pistol truck. That guy had great taste.

 

Working my way forward, ill build a front bumper this spring I think. The factory front bumper, even heavily modified, is just too mild to fit in with the rear. Have material for sliders just takin up room in garage too but gotta finish the kickout plate on the wifes sliders still. Too many projects and too much real work, never enough time.

Installed one side vinyl before realizing it was the wrong color...I don’t know what I was thinking doing white on white....now to remove it and order a black colored one. Such an idiot!

 

Maybe use some Blue Tape next time and measure down from the body crease with a plastic ruler. Put the tape at the bottom of where your sticker will rest as a guide. Reason I say is looks like your current one pictured is crooked and leaning down on the right.

White on white reminds me of when some snot nosed kids needed something to do and Sensei would hand them white paper and white crayons and say get busy drawing.

 

Other than being crooked it looks good. The mountains need to be shadow too though.

 

I didn't think king made rear shocks for these trucks. Is this new?

 

That bed still looks pretty dirty. I would suggest you wash and wax that section before putting on the next sticker.

 

you don't want to wax before installing the sticker. the wax will hurt the adhesive's ability to adhere.

 

That's a good looking truck! For wheels, I don't think there are that many with a high negative offset. I know SCS for sure and if I had the money that's what I'd go with.

 

Got any info on that rear corner step? Is it universal, how does it mount?

 

I've never heard this before but I'll take your word for it. Either way, I'd make sure the paint was really clean.

 

Hey guys, my friend's 1st Gen has an issue and I talked about how much y'all on this message board have helped me. So he wanted to ask your thoughts:

"I got a P0031 code and P0420 first, didn't get around to fixing it, checked it later and had an additional P0430.

I just replaced the upstream heated O2 sensor which fixed the P0031 code. But now my check engine is back on for the P0420 and P0430. Took it to a dealership for hopefully some good diagnostics, annnnd they just wanna replace it all.

I disagree. I don't have any power loss or worse gas mileage.

I live out in CO so smog checks don't matter, should I just live with it? Or take it to a muffler shop to burn out gunk? Or get both Cats swapped? Or something else completely??"

 

Cheap enough to try swapping out all 4 sensors before looking at replacing everything. Worst case you're out $200 and still have to replace the cats, best case you're out only $200.

 

Blue tape and a tape measure was used to line the sticker up so it’s just the angle of the shot that makes it look crooked.

Yeah I wish they shadowed them but I didn’t make the sticker so it is what it is.

That section was washed and claybarred. I didn’t wax due to the same feeling of it hindering the adhesive.

So I took all the white off and I guess it looks a little better but still not sold on it so I’m not sure if I’ll install the other side of remove this one completely.

It’s actually for a Ford f series but since amp doesn’t make one specifically for our 1st gens I knew I would have to mod a bit. Got it open box for cheap so I gave it a shot. Had to oblong the top hole but mounted it to the frame and the towing receiver frame. Stout and works great. I like that I can hold onto the bed rail and step onto the step, then onto the tailgate.

 

Go drive it hard for 10-15 minutes (a few full throttle pulls and slow down with engine braking) and maybe keep the RPM's up on the freeway by turning o/d off for a couple miles. See if the cats are loaded up and need to get hot to burn it off.

Cost: a gallon or two.

 

@assassin10000 knows the old Italian Tune Up. Always worth a try.

 

These are custom. They are universal shock body and they just put the right sized mounts on. A friend knows a few guys there, so thats how I got them.

 

Good on ya. I had my rulers edge on it earlier and had calculated about a degree off. Maybe the sticker is crooked?

 

I think it looks good. Has a a sort of ghost flame effect.

This week I discovered (OK I already knew but denied) that my access cab was too small for the family of four to do big trips in. We spent a week in the mountains skiing and hiking, and there just ain't no way around it, we're not going to be happy in there road tripping to Alaska from New England in a couple years.

Background: Our favorite duty station was Ft Wainwright, Alaska, and we try to go back every year. Our best friends are there, our kids (2 and 5) have flown, but not done the ALCAN yet. When I get back from my, about to start, (last?) deployment we want to drive up. I was harboring illusions that the access cab tundra would be big enough. It wont.

When I was a teenager, I was super into car tinkering (I was super into the Ford Bronco II of all things[OK, I still think they are awesome]). Then I took a ~10 year hiatus from motorheading to break stuff and people for the government and climb mountains when I wasn't. This Tundra has re-ignited my love of wrenching.

I've got a great truck. Solid dealership maintenance records, a new frame, no rust on the body, and I've put some sweet preventative maintenance into it the last 6 months or so. I guess the winter of 21-22 is going to be my search for a 2005-2006 Double cab...
