I'm sure it has something to do with percentage and mileage. They likely either want you to be able to go X# of miles after the light comes on, or with a certain percentage of fuel remaining (or both).

I would lean toward percentage. 3/21=14%. 14% of 38 would be 5.7 (almost 6) gallons.

All I know is I’m glad there’s a large cushion ... wife gave me some bad navigation on our last road trip and I had to make another 25-30ish miles after the low fuel light to get to the next gas station! Don’t recall exact count, but I think I only filled up 33-34 gallons.

Typically I am at 31 gallons if I hit the low fuel light.

It's based off of how many miles you can go after the fuel light on. Not how many gallons are left. Wouldn't make sense to only have a 3 gallon reserve and only have 45 miles left when a honda civic has a 3 gallon reserve and has another 120 miles to go.

Oh really? When was this standard decided by Toyota / Auto manufacturers? Just sayin' because my '06's light came on when it had maybe 3 or 4 gallons left. Does the smaller third gen tank warning light come on when it still has 8 gallons left in the tank as well?

Brand new 21 CM. 15 miles left on the estimated tank, and truck stalled in the driveway angled down when trying to turn the engine over.

Had to roll down to a flatter spot on the driveway to get it to turn over and stay over. Went to the gas station and put 31 gallons in.

So 7 gallons remaining and it stalled out? This is extremely disappointing.

30.5 gallons was the most I have put in so far. That was on a deer lease trip where I was trying to push it, stupid as it was as towns are 30 miles apart.

This is why. The tank is tall and long, and the pickup is near the middle. All your fuel was at one side of the tank. The larger the tank, the bigger this issue is. It's about percentage volume in this scenario. If you have a huge 100 gallon tank and you have 10 gallons of fuel, unless there's baffling in there, the fuel won't be high enough for the fuel pickup. The fuel pickup in the Tundra tank is about 1" above the bottom. If your fuel level isn't more than 1" high in the tank, below the pickup, you're not getting fuel.

Does anyone know if the stock tank is baffled? I had the smaller tank and didn't check for baffles before installing my TFT.

I’ve only filled it a couple times, but it has always been around 32 gallons.

    Hi all,
Picked up a 2017 2 weeks ago. Just had the first fill up. The light came on, display said 30 miles range left. It only took 28gal to fill.

My Tacoma had a 21.1 gallon tank, and a fill up would usually be around 18.5gal.

 Read through some of the previous posts in this thread. You'll see this is normal for these trucks.

I read through a bit, was surprised there was nearly 10 gal reserve, but I still got well over 400 miles out of the 28 gal. So that's nice. I would only get about 260 in the Tacoma.

Background first. I've been driving tacomas since they were called Hi Lux(1980). I drove a 2006 Tundra for 7 years. Always had a full size truck and a Tacoma. I bought a 2021 Tundra, traded in my Ford F150. I told the Toyota dealer two thing I HAD to have on my truck, 4wd and the BIG fuel tank. I have a place in Mexico and a big fuel tank is a necessity not a luxury. We are not allowed to carry full gas cans over the bridge into Mexico and gas there is $5.00 per gallon. So I bought the Tundra with the 38 gal fuel tank, ford was 36 so gained a bit but I need every gallon.
I fill up with gauge on 25 miles and only put in 28 gallons. The point is Toyota clearly lied about how much fuel is "available" in the tank. They did not lie about it being a 38 gal tank, that fact is true. After being a loyal fan of Toyota for 40 years to say I'm disappointed is an under statement.
IS there any recourse at this point?

I fail to see how they lied. If you want to put more fuel in the tank when you fill up, drive farther first. What exactly is the problem?

I have to agree with @7mag you can’t say I have zero miles to go when I have at least 6gal left. I pushed it a little and ran 15 miles past 0 miles to empty before my wife almost killed me for pushing it.

Is 38 gal the standard? I have a TRD Pro and thought 33 was what I have?
I will say it’s the first vehicle I have that the warning light comes on so late. Most that I have had signal with about 30 miles left before empty. Giving one (relatively) plenty of time to look for gas. The tundra came on last week when I had 5 miles left before empty. I was no where close to a gas station. I kinda freaked. I made it but not sure how unless, like y’all say there is way more gas in the truck than it says.
    Weird.

I have the 26 gallon tank. When my gas light comes on I reset the trip meter. When I hit 60 miles then I fill up. Usually put in around 24 gallons.

I put the 38 gal tank in my 09 and ran out of gas once. Didn’t realize the gauge was stuck on 1/4 tank. AAA came and put 1 gallon in the tank then I drove to a gas station that was about a half mile away. It took just over 37 gallons to fill it.
These trucks will use all the gas in the tank.
I never pay attention to my miles to zero indicator. My low fuel light comes on when I still have about 10 gallons remaining so I just do a quick miles traveled/mpg calculation to determine how much gas I have left or how far I can go.

Low fuel light came on for me yesterday with 1 Mike to empty when I pulled in the garage Damn, is that normal? I panicked again. I must not be paying attention at all. I have never been like that. Oh well. Filled up in the garage with 1 gal that I had sitting there and when I work up today to go fill up it still said 1 mil to empty after the 1 gal sat overnight in the tank. Weird.

I am so glad to find out that it is not just my truck. I have gone past 0 miles by a ways and still have never put more than 32 gallons in it. I am tempted to put a couple of gas cans in the back and run it until dry. I would like to have a definitive answer on how much usable gas I have.

I called the local dealer to ask exactly that question and they can’t tell me. Or don’t know the answer.
It’s weird. Can’t put more than 33 gal in a 38 gal tank that says I’m empty but im still driving. I mean is there a 5 gal reserve we should know about?

Took mine 20 miles past “0 miles remaining” and got 34 gallons in the tank when I filled up.
