I'd disagree - OEM wear items ought to have a lifespan that is at least average. I expect to pay through the nose for factory parts, but also that they are a higher level of quality than an econo line at a parts house, because presumably, the manufacturer has that quality priced-in. Moreso when a manufacturer is trading on a reputation for quality

An I agree with you, yes, the battery should last longer. Manufacturers cut corners where they can. Toyota happens to cut corners on things like the battery and suspension. These are wear items. Is it right? No, but, It is what it is and again has nothing to do with reliability of the product as a whole.

Price the other manufacturers products and most are more than a Tundra. Talk about quality that should be priced in but clearly is not. It's hit or miss with $50-70K vehicles. I have no problem replacing a two year old battery on my $39K Tundra comparatively.

I agree 100%. A $70,000 Ford Platinum has numerous known parts that are of shitty quality.

You still can agree with him. He made a generalization based on the information given. If, in fact, it turns out to be the battery, there's a huge, bold lettered warranty sticking out on top of the battery to ensure him he will get his "money's worth". The problem in your disagreement lies in the fact that Toyota doesn't make the batteries, wipers, tires, spark plugs, etc.

Maybe it's a question if what a person considers "quality" to mean - if we're talking powertrain quality or electrical harnesses, anything other than wear items, then I'd agree with you.

My opinion (and it really is just that) is quality is anything the factory touched, including what they choose to install. But I see where you're coming from with tempering that for the bean-counters!

The only serious recall I think of for the Tundra is the fuel pump! Before pulling the trigger you should really do some research with others GM Ford Chrysler has a ton of recalls for there products. I will gladly take 3 recalls over all the ones you will get with the others. Now if you fancy all the bells and whistles of the others plan on enjoying them in your garage because the only other time is when your taking into the shop. Your call your money just trying to help and it's not a myth bro reason why our tundra hold there value. Good luck.

I would be more worried about the lack of the use of the truck and failing parts - 3 year old truck with 20k miles screams dead battery to me

I have used Toyota brand batteries since 2003, and I've never had a problem with them. Mine last longer than most because I keep the terminals clean, and I top it off with distilled water especially in the Summer. My dealer has replaced them under warranty a few times, with little or no money out of my pocket.

Correct, sounds like that battery needed to be on a battery tender once in a while. I wonder when the last time the oil was changed?

My ‘14 Tundra battery was giving up the ghost within 2 years of purchase. Start with buying a new battery. Freaking weird post from the OP.

Stock batteries last about 3 years. Was the same with my F-150, when I had one. I fully expect the battery in my 2021 to crap out Fall 2023, so I will be replacing it sooner with something better.

Depending on when the truck was purchased and if it’s a Toyota OEM battery, it should be under warranty. I had my wife’s 2016 Highlander OEM battery replaced for 40 bucks (prorated) at 2 1/2 years old. They even did the install because it was free.

But it truly sounds like OP wants to have a legit excuse to trade it in...it’s sounds like your mind is made up I get it though. I got that 1% 5th gen Japanese build 4Runner prior to my Tundra. All the door sills, the rear gate, above the windshield rusted at 2 years old. And I washed/waxed monthly. And my drivers seat was wearing super fast. It happens its a mechanical item...I was the fly with my 4Runner not the windshield...

The lore of Toyota’s quality took a hit many years ago it seems when the floor mats started making Camrys go mad....Ford blamed Firestone for the explorer wrecks in the 90’s, and the Firestone family is kin....so there will always be issues and recalls on vehicles, and all a recall really does is inconvenience you for a day or so while they hopefully fix a known problem for free. I’d toss a new battery in it first before trashing the entire truck, have the recall work done, and take it from there.

I’m just pissed Toyota gave me a 5 year warranty that expires in October that I haven’t been able to use for anything other than a parking brake adjustment - what the hell Toyota?!

My father replaced his stock/OEM battery in his Tundra in summer of 2018

I had my stock/OEM battery replaced under warranty in summer of 2020.

    His a 2000 and mine is a 2019!

    :notsure:

While he IS all things meticulous, I am no slouch either but it is a wonder... this Toyota battery chatter. ;)

I get it, recalls ARE annoying. Especially since my first Toyota recall (air bag issue) didn't go to my satisfaction. They obviously did a half assed job, and I called them in it. They "fixed" it, but I'm not sure... did they actually di it right, or just hide the evidence I originally found and my airbag may or may not functiin when needed? Left a sour taste in my mouth. I trust Toyota from factory, not so much their dealer network of mechanics. So neither my 4R or Tundra have been scheduled for the fuel pump recall. Debating on whether I ever do it - both are perfectly fine now, seems more likely the tech will screw more shit up than the recall will fix. Thinking I'll wait until/IF I start having issues to mess with it.

Here's what I found after the air bag recall on our 4R. Would make it difficult to change the cabin air filter, don't ya think?

Back in the day, way back, the way to run down your battery was to leave your lights on, or radio on. Wasn't much going on in the background with the key out of the ignition. Present>>>>a lot of things going on in the background with the key out of the ignition. Not a bad idea to "tend" to the battery nowadays.

That's pretty bad. I would have taken a pic , sent it to Yota Corp and asked if this was how they wanted the airbag recall repair done.....

Right? And the service manager agreed saying "This shouldn't happen - only our trained techs perform these recalls. It's not an entry level mechanic like our LOF guys."

So if this is the quality of work the trained techs perform, it's a wonder there aren't more oil change horror stories than what we hear about.

I know all techs aren't bad, and there's some awesome ones out there. It's just that it's such a crap shoot... the good techs are so hard to find these days.

I should have, but they didn't fight me on correcting it. It's just that after the fact, the more I think about it, I don't know if the repair of the repair was any better, or if they just hid the evidence.

Those aren't there now. They did move the wires out of the way (where to I'm not sure, but I don't see them now) when they fixed it the second time - I just don't know what else they might have butchered back up in there that I can't see without taking everything apart. Guess I'll just be careful and not try to hit anything with the front end. lol
