Side Mirror wobble

My driver's side mirror has a slight wobble. This was noticeable a few months ago and I simply torqued down the smaller (t-10) bolt which worked for a while.

It is back. It seems that the t-10 is bottomed out and I read that some think this bolt is too long and hence add a small washer. I tried a makeshift rubber washer but that didn't work.

It is not the whole assembly but rather the mirror and its backing. It can be rotated ever so slightly clockwise and counterclockwise looking at the face of the mirror.

I also pulled off the whole assembly as I am trying the PHM fix for a loose window by drilling new holes for the mirror mounting bracket. The rest of the assembly seems to be in fine working order.

Any other ideas to fix this?

 

Best bet is to remove the entire Mirror Assy (3 nuts from inside) whilst you have the door panel off. There is a Torx Bolt that can’t be tightened on the mirror when on door door as its tight up against the body preventing a tool from properly engaging.

You can also pop the mirror off the Assy and tighten/inspect the motor mount bolts inside. Just make sure when putting back the mirror to have those metal rings on the ‘2 rotor thingies’ on the mirror backing squared off and pulled to the edge. If they are cocked or low on the ‘thingie’ then you’ll end up in catastrophe pain.

Engage the bottom ‘thingie’ first. Then aim and engage the top ‘thingie’ next. Now snap the bars of the mirror backing into the motor housing clips. Adjust mirror at the switches to confirm fitment. Maybe have a blanket under you in case the mirror slips. You’ll understand once you start.

 

Per the track fix: Just loosen that top track nut (by the mirror) and leave it engaged. That is your baseline. The two lower bolts on the track need removal for the hole drilling and sliding over to create tension.

 

That torx bolt near the body of the truck (the one you need to remove the assembly to get at) was tight. I think I need to look at the motor mount bolts. Not sure how to get in there but I
ll go take another look.

BTW: just finished drilling new holes to shore up the window mount. Hoping that fixes the rattle when the window is all the way down.

 

You’ll pop off the mirror facing to see the motor mounts. The ‘thingies’ hold it to the motor for adjusting. The clips hold it tight to the body.

 

Okay, thanks. That sounds like a case where I might break something! So, just to be clear, to remove the mirror, there are no specific bolts, rather clips that you just pull on?

edit: pulled all apart and then reassembled. Seems a bit better but a drive will tell.
