I hear ya, now that mine is paid off it’s time to put a little $ in it. I have new toyo AT3s on the way and plan on modding it just a bit.

I’ve only bought new once.. IF..450hp and 30mpg rumors are true I’ll be tempted! But most likely wait and get a used one for 5-10k less?

My brother's ex girlfriend put it this way: when you buy a new domestic truck, you choose what you're want to replace:
    Dodge: transmission
    Ford: electrical/electronics
    GM: front end

One of those 3 sounds cheaper and easier to me but maybe that's a misconception on my part.

I'm planning to keep my 2020 for about 15 years but that would be contingent on it having enough payload for my needs once I have bigger kids and a travel trailer.

I've grown quite fond of my 2010 CrewMax SR5 that I bought last July with 215k miles on the clock. It has 217k miles now and still running strong. If I were to ever sell it, it would most likely be for a 3rd gen preowned. These trucks are crazy priced brand new.

No. My buddies 2015 3500 ate a transmission at 70k. He also owns his own diesel and automotive repair center and takes care of that truck. He went ahead and spend 8k and upgraded to the Aisan trans and dumped the 68RFE.

No. He owns a diesel shop in Denver, CO. He would never risk that.

It does have a small lift and tires. This is the heaviest he tows. 24' flatbed (3800lbs), Black buggy is 4500 lbs and his sons Suzuki is pretty light, so less than 3500 lbs.

If he owns a diesel shop and a Cummins I bet the first thing he did was a delete and a tune.

OK, fair enough, but by and large the first thing Cummins owners do is delete the emissions crap and put an EFI Live or Smarty tuner on their rig. Its certainly not risky, and I would think anyone who owns a diesel shop wouldn't think it risky either.

EPA really cracked down early 2020 on deletes/tunes. You can’t even go to the diesel parts websites and get egr block off plates for 15 year old diesels anymore. It’s out there, but not advertised due to the crackdown.

Risk is not worth the reward of a few HP. The Clean Air Act is pretty clear on fines/violations. Trust me, you don't want those fines. Hell, the Diesel Brothers got slapped with over 850,000.00 in fines last March. Diesel shops can get popped for 50000.00 per offense. Trust me, most people would dime out a shop in a New York minute to get out of fines.

    https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a31399622/diesel-brothers-reality-tv-fined/

The emissions equipment on new diesels robs a couple hp... That's it. I drank the cool-aide too. Watch these:

Gale Banks is the gold standard in diesel/performance tuning. I would have the Derringer on my truck if they had one little option (manual regen/mobile regen). I run the EDGE CTS3 Insight. His products just work...and work well.

Now the EGR blocks are all done electronically. Easier by far.

It’s more about the restrictiveness and limp mode bullshit that the emission equipment does than lowering hp for me. If given the choice, I’d just tune the truck to run without emissions and not bump up any power. I mean all the current diesels are pushing over 900 lb/ft of torque from the factory. The pissing match between ford and ram for most torque is unnecessary at this point. I’m looking at possibly going back to diesel for Rv towing, but the emissions are always in the back of my mind kind of holding me back. A duramax would be my choice though

You probably have heard me say this a "few" times:

Diesel trucks make crappy daily drivers. You really need to work diesels and heat them up. My truck sits in the garage until one of a few things happens:

    1) Tow duties.
    2) Snow (my daily driver Lexus is RWD and will not move in the snow)
    3) Long trips

I took my truck tonight into work due to #2 on the list and I needed to do a regen. Once I pulled in, set the Edge CTS3 on manual regen, popped the hood, and the truck did the rest. I also drive 38 miles one way to work, so no short trips for me.

The people I see having problems on other sites is very evident:

    1) Not monitoring systems with gauges (aftermarket)
    2) towing max capacity and not swallowing pride. It's ok not going 75 mph towing 26K lbs up a mountain pass (usually not doing #1).
    3) Using cheap tuners or not doing all the mods completely due to cost.
    4) Using high HP tunes while towing and not watching EGT's.

For someone looking to RV or pull a lot, diesels are where it's at...for now. A couple people at my work DD diesel trucks from under 10 miles away. Interesting how they are the ones having all the problems.

Yeah I grew up daily driving diesels so it’s nothing new to me vs someone who hasn’t daily driven one before. My drive to work is 20 miles one way and about 90% highway so while it’s not a huge drive, it’s not stop and go to where the truck doesn’t warm up

Short commutes are terrible for a diesel. Precisely the reason I moved back to gas. Diesels have their place, but if you aren't working them like they need you will pay for it.

...Dearly. I have been there with two per-emissions diesels. Totally destroyed them. They were dodges...so there is that.

This is why I have been keeping a close watch on the 2022 Tundra. If it's everything I hear, it will fill the gap for a lot of owners.

Well, you blink and the whole diesel world has changed.

I had an 06 Dodge 2500 CTD all the way up until 2014. I had 4" straight pipe from the turbo back (stupid loud!), a Smarty tuner, and AFE intake and full billet rebuilt tranny. Truck made plenty of power and regularly pulled a 32' toyhauler at about 12k lbs fully loaded. Like you mentioned, just watch the EGTs and adjust speed or gear accordingly and it was great. I daily drove it for about 4 years straight with zero issues.

When Cali started trying to do emissions testing on diesels back then the smog places didn't even know how to do it on the Gen 3 and older since they couldn't even hook the computer up to them. I'd just set the Smarty to eco mode and they did a visual smoke puff test and checked that I had a cat and called it good. I did have to weld in a gutted cat so I'd pass the visual check, but otherwise it was just a formality. I had friends with Gen 4s that immediately deleted their DPF, and EFI Live was the big new thing in tuning, so they all did that. In those years they had to do that just to get back to the power the Gen 3s were making. Obviously the power the newer trucks are making is well beyond the Gen 3s and I haven't really paid attention to diesels since then, but I just assumed that folks were doing the same thing.
I guess when your making over 400HP and over 1000 lb-ft of torque stock then all that other stuff becomes unnecessary.

Definitely. I just plan to stay with my current truck. There's no way to make a lateral move financially, so I plan to love the truck I have.

As much crap dodge gets, at least they’re going back to the CP3 fuel pump after only 2 short years with the CP4. That leaves ford as the only one still using that turd of a fuel pump. I agree about the 2022 tundra. Should be getting some actual details soon hopefully

I hope so. The 2022 Tundra thread so far is a few renderings or spy shots of what it may look like, a lot of speculation about engine/transmission options, and about 30 pages of Tacoma, Ford Ecoboost and diesel truck discussion. Not that those topics aren't somewhat pertinent, but I think we're all just passing the time until Toyota finally drops the data on us.
