I put the Focal 165AS3 set in this weekend. I ( like a lot of others) was worried about putting a three inch midrange into a the stock location on the dash. Boy am I glad I went ahead and tried!!! It is fantastic!!! Just removed the factory speaker, removed the two t nuts, then trimmed what I needed to get the speaker to fit. Underneath is a thin defrost duct. I just used the end of my socket ratchet and pressed down on it gaining me maybe 1/4” of space. They dropped right in. First three way component set I’ve had, really impressed!!

Make sure you trim the inside of the grille with some flush cutters and install foam rings.

Watch 5 Star Car Stereo on YouTube. They installed a 3 way set of Focal Flax on Tundra.

    I'm using a Helix V Eight DSP MK2 with Audiofrog GB60s, GB25s, and GB10s for front stage.

Sorry to tell you that your new midrange might be hitting the grille. You need room for the driver to move up and down. I have the same issue with mine.

The 3" drivers have a xmax of 1.7mm. So long as the grille isnt contacting the suspension surround he will be fine. The diaphragm wont even extrude high enough to contact the grille. Depression on the foam suspension should leave marks and would likely limit suspension travel and reduce the risk of diaphragm contact even further. I would just continue to visually check them over time, but any mechanical chatter would be a audible sign that excursion is being impeded and may be damaging the spider suspension as it fights against the diaphragm suspension.

I'm currently running the Infinity 3032CFX which has a tweeter that mounts above the diaphragm and suspension level. Taller than these 3" Focals. I did have to shave the honeycomb off the backside of the cover but verified that there is no contact. Both visually and with a level.

Do you have any pictures of how yours are mounted?

I did shave the honeycomb off of the rear of the grill. That for sure would of touched the speaker. Right now they sound great and I have no effects from the surround being touched by the grill.

I guess my only concern, if the grill is still touching the surround would be that the spider is able to move without restriction but the surround suspension isnt. It would be hard to tell if or how limited it is though. But if one were to move without restriction and the other weren't it may put additional strain on the suspension. "May" being key, I couldn't say definitively. Just monitor it occasionally.

Here's what I did. I cut into the duct to allow 3/8" of space (only needed about 3/16"). I mounted the driver from underneath the adapter. I'm running Audiofrog GB25s. I don't believe that by pushing the duct down and installing the driver would prevent the duct from flexing back up. Hot air will warm the plastic and since it has memory, it will try to retain its given factory shape. Here are pictures of what I did in the name of Car Audio.
