    Leaks or play. I had quite a bit of play in the wheel, and had already replaced both inner and outer tie rod ends, leaving the rack as the culprit.

    the ball joint inside the boot is part of the inner tie rod end.

    Okay, thanks. I've never replaced anything on the rack.

    OEM for the inner, and outer tie rods for long term use?

    I went with Detroit Axle for mine. Inners come with a reman rack, and I ordered new outers to match.

    Moog is fine for inner & outers.

    If the inner has play it's time to replace. If just a bit rusty but no play and not pitted/damaged, you can just grease them.

    For the jam nut hit it with a MAPP gas torch (propane may work too, just takes way longer) and then liquid wrench, pb blaster or other penetrating fluid at the threads a couple times (when hot). The heat then cooling effect may break it free.

    :thumbsup: Thank you.
    Heres what I did. Free hand cordless grinder with a cutting wheel. I tried a map gas torch, and penetrant. No love there.

    I'll have to try some of that on the kitchen sink one day.

    For now... my co-workers call me Brutus for good reason. Large man, with abnormal strength for my size.

    After some tomfoolery on my part... a little ass sniffing, and head scratching... I figured out I put my sway bar mount brackets on backwards, and sides reversed.

    Corrected.

    Pass side outer tie rod is on. As per the norm, the passengers side went much better.

    Has anyone else ever noticed that its 90% the drivers side that gives them the most trouble?

    Edit: Also, I figured out that my lugs are much closer to a 13/16 than a 22. Mine are slightly rounded from the goof offs at Raben Tarrrrr

    Toyota lugs are often 21mm, 13/16" is very close to it.

    Had some epoxy out for another project, so I used a bit of the excess to see if it'll repair my original visor mount. I did rough up the surface with sand paper before application. Then used a file to level it out after curing overnight.

    IMG_20210102_153604.jpg

    It may just break loose as soon as I rotate the visor. I'll try it out another day.

    sounds like its time for new lugs. theyre suppose to be 21mm. but as they get older and swell its not uncommon to have to go up a size

    I was spraying some penetrant on, and letting her rip with the good blades. Couldn't find a decent price on any good quantity of cutting fluid locally.

    Full send with the carbide toofs.

    Ah. Using oil or lubricants makes cutting worse. It's better to use water of all things. Or take breaks so the cutting edge doesn't get too hot and deteriorate.

    Cutting fluid doesn't actually lubricate, it cools.

    I use a Water based fluid in a spray bottle. Makes using it super easy and being water based cleanup is null.

    A slower speed and cutting fluid you shouldnt burn those blades out as fast. I just made a dozen cuts with the same Milwaukee blade through .120 wall 2" tube and the blade still cuts as new.

    Just went for a little drive. To the end of the driveway, something is hitting at full lock.
    Sounds like the dust shield if I had to guess based on sound. Pulls a little towards to drivers side.
    Think I have too much camber inwards.

    Tired of wallerin around in the cold. :rofl:

    I use this CRC stuff, works well for cutting, holesaws, etc. Runs out a spray bottle into a fairly light mist for easy application.

    Disassembled my rear brakes today and pulled the axles. Excited to get this project started now that all the parts are here.

    Oil-soaked drum vs passengers.

    Tun (43).jpg

    I've never drained the rear diff oil over 155K miles until now. Drain plug wasn't too bad and only some minor metal shavings.

    Tun (11).jpg

    My driver's side is the side that failed. The ABS sensor had a chunk of metal sticking to it. This definitely explains a few things.

    Tun (16).jpg

    Tun (18).jpg

    Everything went smoothly except for a getting a gash on my head - that warranted an extra beer. I'm going to have a shop remove the backing plates and press the new bearings etc. this week. The union for my diff breather mod came early too, stoked about that.

    Nice work!

    I’ve been mulling about ideas on how to setup my pullout stove since I've picked it up from FB several weeks ago. I have yet to make the plunge (cut) since it's cold outside. But I'm sure it'll all come together quickly once I make a box and figure a way to secure it to the bed.

    I'd like to try and model it after the setup on https://pullkitchen.com/ ($4300 is a lotta money!).

    I didn't hear any grinding noises and wasn't expecting this. I pulled over and had the truck towed home as soon as I saw hot oil seeping out and barely moved it after that. With everything apart it definitely makes noise when you turn it by hand.

    That metal piece is part of the rear brake assembly I take it? Did you have an overt brake failure at some point? Parking brake failure?

    Well I lurked the junk out of this one. I think I made it through the whole thread over the last couple months.

    @Thrussn
    Excellent work on the 4x4. That was a killer project.

    @theblurry1
    That sucks so bad. The used truck tax can be brutal sometimes. I hope the second job is going ok.

    @empty_lord
    Mandatory compliments on the Reg Cab. I came from a reg cab taco with shell and really miss it some days.

    @Professional Hand Model
    The drawings are great.

    @Tundra2
    Keep on keeping on. I know you talked about letting this set for a while but it looks like you have kept up with the work and are back on the road now? The average new car payment in this country is over $600 a month. Keep that in mind. I know it is probably tough to be 2wd and the 3.4 but it sounds like with the miles you drive this is the right setup for you. 4x4 and a v8 add functionality but do you need it right now? I am also a huge fan of the second car. Skipping most of the snow days in that truck will probably keep that thing on the road as long as you want to drive it. Being at home with the folks should give you the opportunity to get your life infrastructure all squared away for many years to come.

    Here is some inspiration for you:

    Brakes were fine. The metal pieces in the picture and that I found on my ABS sensor are part of the bearing cage and shield. I can move the balls on the bearing freely one by one.

    Yeah that’s an insane amount of money for what you get. But, I think those mall crawler Taco guys are their target market and if you make it Tacti-cool enough, they’ll buy anything.

    I started laying mine out in Cad over the weekend and was likely going to buy plywood sometime this week.
