Whatever happened to the days when people took pride in putting a wrench on a truck? I know whenever I touch my truck with a wrench I always take pride in it ya know. I do things the correct way and make sure when I walk away from it that I feel 100% satisfied with it. I have 2 kids and they mean the world to me and I put them in my truck and if I work on it, I want them to be safe.... So the reason why I'm writing this,

I took my truck in for an alignment because I went wheeling around the desert. Nothing too wild, but I felt my alignment was off a bit and I always get it aligned when I wheel my truck or "over do it". So I get home last night after work and want to clean my license plates up a bit and pull my skid plate so I can fit a new RCI. I had my truck serviced ON BASE at a firestone complete car care location and felt pretty good about it. After looking things over, I noticed the nut for my lower control arm WAS GONE and the other on the driver side was threaded on my 4 threads. As I drove it didn't feel like much got done and now I know why. Literally the only thing holding that fucking thing together was a bolt with no nut. Not only am I not happy but seriously, how do you forget that??? Have to take my truck in on Monday for them to look at it and replace that and they better realign it because its obvious they didn't do shit. They guy even said they took it for a drive and it still pulled and they had to set the steering wheel and it was as good as new. So pist!!!!!!

    end rant. beer me!

I hear ya. I hate letting other people work on my stuff.
Just put my RCI plate on last weekend. They look great. Scooped it up from someone on this site.
When I took the truck in for its first '"free" oil change they rotated the tires. Fu$&er kept the key thing for my wheel locks. Glad I checked their work.

I have a friend that owns a very high end repair/tire shop and he says that 50% of his business comes from places like that that hire inexperienced and unskilled labor cheap and tear up a enormously high percentage of the cars they touch.

    Thats horse shit!!

Wow that's crazy! It sucks because you pay your hard-earned money to these places for a service and it wasn't even done correctly. Now you have to waste more of your time to get it done right. If I knew how to wrench on my truck, I sure would! I would always have peace of mind knowing it was done correctly. Hopefully the idiots do the job right this time.

Our education system is designed for our youth to get desk jobs or become lawyers or scientists. Our kids gain very little skill with hands on work and the only way they get it is by specifically signing up for shop related classes. Their hands get plenty of stick time on the xbox though.

I mean, the only thing I could do not to just hop in my car and go down there and cause a scene was to remember that they are human... but am I ya know. I shouldn't have to check the work of a $100 alignment. I mean, the dude actually had the audacity to tell me he took it for a drive and realized it wasn't completey done and had more aligning to my steering wheel and then it drove like a dream. He just flat out lied. Think about it, the whole reason for me going in there was because they needed to set those exact nuts. they didn't even put one back on and the other was holding on by a thread... literally.

completely agree man. What makes it worse is that I am on a base with people who have wives and kids who are stateside while their husbands are deployed and this is the type of quality work that they have to lean back on. We are in the middle of the Mojave desert, not like we can run down to different tire shops. It really pisses me off. I called my wife and told her not to drive the truck anywhere and that it's sitting until I get another nut to install so I can drive it back to those asshats.

Ya know what, That's exactly what it was too. I have the time to do it myself and could have, but I like giving back to a small community especially the one I live in. And that guy just literally shit on me. If he didn't lie and say it drove like a dream, it's be different, but he didn't even finish the job by tightening the damn nuts down which is what completes the job. for quality work I have to drive to Bakersfield or north LA.

See... shit like that. All it takes is double checking your work. having the guy next to you put eyes on it and confirm it looks as it should. don't these people have a checklist they go off of. As bad as it sounds, there should even be a check list for gas attendants, even some of those people will put gas in a diesel. Simple mistakes because they were probably worried about someone liking a facebook post or when their next break was.

Take lots of pictures before you put another nut back on and go straight to the management.
I wonder how many oil drain plugs leave that place finger tight.

these simple tasks are things that should be taught in school. I was in a welding class in 6th grade and welded my first bbq pit from $75 worth of scrap metal and metal can. Kids these days don't know the difference between their ass and a hole in the ground! too busy looking for handouts. They want someone to pay for their school but they don't want to do the work. I seen the 3 yahoos that worked there and they all looked like I should double check their work, but I didn't feel like I should.

I hear ya. Being in the middle of the Mojave throws an entire different obstacle at you. Good thing is that you are keen enough to catch it. Not everyone is. Might be an opportunity to bring awareness to unsuspecting people. And get the shop to tune ylthemselves up

Really what happened to a lot of things???! Almost everywhere i go, every dollar i spend, every guy i do business with i feel like everything will try to shit on me. I am VERY thankful for the businesses and people who do me right. Cant have peace of mind about anything anymore. Some guys i used to work with we would just look at the shit situation and look at each other shrug our shoulders and say..."cant have anything nice". lol

Ya I was thinking the same thing. I help in engineering the most sophisticated war fighter in the world and when it comes to my job, I always have a second eye and even third eye look over my work and math or whatever in order to be completely satisfied. Shops need to have a quality assurance process in place. Some people think they are just too damn good at their job to have someone look over their work. We are human and miss things and this is just not cool. But luckily I crawled under there and checked things out. What's even shittier is I just got home and realized the nuts and bolts that they needed to loose or tighten weren't even touched. They still had a very thin layer of dirt on them. Pisses me off

That's funny because I say the same. I have 52k with truck worth and accessories and that simple 100 dollar job could have totalled it and killed me.

I honestly think some (not all ) workers deliberately (pardon my french) fuk up just because they are having bad day, don't have something nice as you or just plain don't care at all. That dips hit knew damn well he was lying straight to your face.

Although NOWHERE near your level I do quite a bit of quality control and it's amazing at how many obvious fails are missed on the first look. Once pointed out the "how did I miss that" comes out more often than I like.

Human eyes aren't near as accurate as we would like to believe

This is one of the reasons why I do all the maintenance and modifications by myself when possible; that, and so I can learn more as I go.

@AnonVet sorry to hear that. The firestone on our base is horrible. I've heard so many horror stories from people who went there. I think they only remain open because of the convenient location.

There's a whole new mindset these days when it comes to taking pride in your work, earning money to make a living, etc. So many workers these days are only worried about is whether or not minimum wage will increase to $15/hr and will their welfare check be enough to buy beer. So much of the workforce is out to make a quick, unearned dollar, they've forgotten that feeling of accomplishment you get from doing a good job.
