Hey Guys, Have a 18 CM. Possible to keep the stock head unit but upgrade speakers in doors and dash and still have pretty good results on sound quality? Thanks

Sound quality improvement would be marginal. The amp and head unit process shit weird. You’ll probably end up adding to it. But if you’re going to do it in stages , you could always start with upgraded speakers.

The stock head unit only puts out about 10 watts per channel. As mentioned the speakers would most likely marginal but its a start.

I kept the stock unit, added a better amplifier, a pancake sub and replaced all speakers. Very happy with the sound and quality......I wanted to keep the head unit stock so this is the way I went.

To the tweeters and center channel yes. The doors are amplified, I havent measured them but Im sure theyre in the 20-40W range. Two best things Ive come across for the stock system so far is to simply seal the doors with something like noico. I dont mean cover them panels, I mean to actually remove the plastic moisture barrier and seal the opening with the dampener. Mid bass was quite noticeably improved by that. Other than that I just tossed in the Infinity 3032 CFX 3.5"s in the dash corners, not bad at all. Very clearly more accurate than the stock tweeters, Infinity makes sensitive speakers so they didnt lose any noticeable volume either. The main 3.5" mid woofer brings a touch of percussion higher up, some people might like that.

Obviously having done a lot of stereo work in the past, the stock system is really better off completely replaced. But for those truly budget minded, that would be my recommendation.

You want to make sure you get 2 ohm speakers as well. There are quite a few choices if you look hard enough but most people who complain about the sound after changing out speakers don’t pay attention to that small detail. Also, use 6x9 components in the front - better bass response in my opinion.

How did you get the 3.5's to fit? Aren't the stock tweets 2" or so?

What speakers did you replace stock with? Did you keep center channel?

make sure they’re 2 ohm (or closest to it). I used Memphis 6x9’s audio for the fronts and jbl gto components for the rear

Nothing like a Ferrari powered by a Honda engine as someone else said...lol. The stock head unit is about 10 watts a channel, so alot of potential and sound quality is lost by keeping it and replacing everything else.

They fit but dont line up with the screw holes. I attached one side with the stock screw and the other with a self taping screw into the plastic.

I kept the stock head unit and speakers and installed this under the passenger seat for a 100 bucks. It gave it more punch and I'm satisfied.

If you want to really improve sound quality you have to replace the HU.
Man, I hope Toyota addresses the weak ass sound system with the redesign.

That amp looks sweet and very small. Where did you mount it?

Definitely not plug and play, I researched the wiring online then sat at my desk with a soldering iron. Lol
It's driving all of my door speakers.
Not sure on your sub question, I'm not really a stereo person.

If you decide to do it, you need these two plugs to make it plug and play. If you can't find it online, Let me know and I'll send you this one.

With these plugs I don't need to run power from the battery?

I kept the stock head unit in my 2016 CM, but did replace the dash speakers, new amp and LOC and added a sub.
Needed the previously mentioned plugs from Autoharness House, other than that it, was plug and play.

James Randy Taylor at Tech12volts can help you out as well.

Kept the OEM center. Just replaced the speakers with Infinity's both front and back and got a pioneer 6 ch amp in case I needed to add a sub. But so far the speakers give me just enough bass that I like.
