Shopping for a 2021 Limited Double Cab

Used Tundra's are so expensive that we decided to look at new ones last week. We test drove a 2021 Double Cab Limited, 4x4 . It had a base MSRP of $45,440. the Limited Premium package ($1,015),TRD - Off Road Package ($155), All Weather Mats and Sill protector ($239), and the Spray on Bed Liner ($599). Add on $1,595 Delivery Processing and Handling for a total MSRP of $49,023.

Most dealers are offering incentives now on top of the Factory Rebate. Right now they offered a dealer discount of $2,801 and a factory Rebate of $2,000. That takes the truck to a selling price of $44,222. They also said that if I finance it for at least 6 months they will cut another $1,000 off. So that takes the price to $43,222. Tax and license is on top of that as is the $399 dealer doc fee.

Seems like a good starting point for negotiation. How much further would they go? I have ready that the hold back is about $900 on the Tundra and the $1595 "processing Fee has fat in it also. Is to unreasonable to aim for $42,000 - $42,500 for a target price for this truck with the options I mentioned above

Its not unreasonable at all. However what I found is that there were very few of the exact truck I wanted. So if you play hardball you have to be prepared to walk away and keep looking. Just offer 42,000 and they will probably split the difference or at least come down a few hundred. Is it worth walking away to save 500? thats up to you. As much as dealerships are hated by many...they have to make some money too.

 

Just for comparison, my '18 with the same options sticker was $46,963.

 

Terms vary by timing (supply and demand) and geographic area. Remember that the Doc Fee is dealer profit. I always offer to prepare the documents myself - to which they would never agree but it is money in the dealer's pocket, an added fee to the dealer's benefit. I think you should expand your search area, be willing to take a drive to explore options and be willing to walk out. The dealer will make money on service and if you give them the promise of future service they are more willing to negotiate the price of the truck. Best of success to you.

 

I find it hilarious that every single dealership I've ever been to claims they have the cheapest doc fees in the country, even the ones that charge like $1000.

 

Check KBB and Edmunds- you can check what Tundras in your area have been sold for, with those options. That will give you a baseline to understand what others have paid for the same truck. I did a quick check on KBB for that truck, those options and midwest location. fair value was 46.2k average, so subtract the dealer discounts/rebates and that would put you in the 42k range. Offer 41.5 and see what they counter...42.5 for that truck would be a nice deal but if it had everything I wanted, I don't think I would let $1000 stop me from getting the truck I wanted. Or you can continue to shop around and see what you can find but know demand is pretty high, stock is rather low.

 

Problem with Kelley and the other is they dont consider the dealer and factory incentives. I am amazed at dealers and private parties advtertising their used SR5 Tundras for more than I can go in today and buy a new limited Tundra (TRD) without even any negotiations. Crazy stuff. Makes to even harder to price a vehicle that is only 2 years old. Book says the same price I can buy a new Limited for. Thats no help. Take Book and deduct a minimum of $5K and go from there!
