The sticker on my new 2020 on the window says change at 5k, but the dealer states 10k. I think I get three free oil changes if I’m not mistaken. What mileage are you guys changing at?

Complete oil change at 10,000 , and filter only and 1Qt, at 5000. Filters are cheap.

5k for ffv (if they still make them) and 10k for others. Some have gotten the dealer to change it at 5k, but that counts towards your free ones. People have gotten an oil analysis at 10k and said it was good.

I am going to continue to change my oil every 5000 miles. I don't know how people can go to 10K for an oil change. On my last Tundra, '14, the oil smelled horrible at 7500 miles. Also, the dealer told me that they don't even use a full synthetic. The service manager told me that it is a blend.

I just really like changing out the filter at 5000, just to see how it looks. And like I said 6.00 for a filter at dealer is cheap, usually pick up 4 or 5 at a time .
Just to throw it out there , but what does everyone do with Fuel filters? Are they easy to get at ,and how often?

Depends on how you drive it. I do 5k intervals for now because that’s what the owner’s manual says and I do more severe driving conditions.

If I was going to extend that out I’d be sending samples to Blackstone.

Me too. I just do mine every 6 mo, in the spring and fall.
Fuel filter is in the tank. You have to drop the tank to pull it out with the pump. It’s not on any maintenance schedules that I know of, kinda like the trans filter.

Yea but that silverado wasn't a Toyota , and probably didn't hold 8.5 QTS. But everyone has their own way, I just like mine. And my oil minder comes on at 5000.

my truck- 2016, 5.7 non FF...change it every 5k miles. I am sure I could to longer, up to the 10k toyota recommends, but it is pretty cheap to do and I feel better changing it 5-6k miles. 10k miles for me is a long time.

So will the dealer do a full oil change at 5k if that’s what I want as a free one you think?

Thanks for fuel filter info , just haven't looked it up yet. One of those areas that gets easily forgotten. Thought maybe one in line also.

This is the only way to know how good the oil is with additives/detergents left for protection and engine wear.

Can you really trust the dealer for a change, from what I've read on here ,alot of guys don't. Especially with over tightening cap , or did they really do it? IF NEW TRUCK , Buy the Alum. cap, change out oil yourself , Have peace of mind. Also if new I wouldn't go over 1500 miles on break in oil. Also when you drop the skid , mark filter location on skid and drop it and cut square hole with die grinder or what you have , so next time all you do is go up inside and remove filter. I did this because I wasn't planning on putting new skids on for awhile ,and it's really easy and filter change is only about 15 min now.

Modern synthetics can definitely make it to 10k but that's also under ideal "commuter" driving conditions. I stick with 5k because i don't mind the minor added expense for the sake of greater detergent content in the oil and (hopefully) greater longevity. I intend to keep my truck until the wheels fall off though.

I also don't trust dealers to wipe their own ass properly so that's the other half. Too many horror stories and incompetence. No one cares about your truck more than you.

I'm sure they would. In their minds, quicker you use up your complimentary ones, the quicker you'd be in to pay out of pocket.

So I'm an interesting situation. I work from home and the only commuting I do is taking my son to day-care which is 1.5mi away. Add to that I do a lot of towing a camper so I don't get the miles quickly, but they are rough miles. That being said, no more than 5k because they're hard miles and no more than 6 months because again short but hard miles.

Always full-syn as well because honestly with package deals and the difference between dino and syn from Advanced Auto it just makes sense.

I do once a year or 5-6k mikes, whichever occurs first and around an open weekend to do it. Typically it works out to be about the same... I also run full synthetic.

Back in '99, we bought a new Grand Prix GTP witht the SC 3.8. It had an "oil life" indicator built in. You'd start at 100%, and I'd usually change oil when it read 15%. When we got it, I'm pretty sure factory was still using dino oil. Got to a little over 3k before oil life hit15%. So I figured "ahh, no matter what it'll try to get you into the dealer every 3k for oil. I'm no fool!"

I did the first 2 or 3 oil changes at the dealer, and each time the oil life read 15% around 3500 miles or so. Then I changed the oil myself and put full synthetic in. It made it to almost 7k before reaching 15% oil life! I couldn't believe the oil life indicator was actually affected by the change to synthetic oil (or that it was sophisticated enough to gauge the difference at all). It stayed pretty consistent hitting 15% oil life left at 6500 - 7k miles all the time I was running synthetic too. I never switched back to dino to test it out the other way.

Not really related to what I do with my Tundra, but something in my life I was surprised by and actually found interesting.

Full synthetic, Walmart , Mehjers , sometimes Farm and Fleet , all 3 usually on sale at one time for 18-22.00 for 5 jugs . Either MOBILE ONE , or VALVOLINE , and 5w20 or 0w20. Mobile one always has rebates of 12.00 .

If not towing, using a car top carrier, heavy vehicle loading, repeated trips of less than 5 miles in temperatures below 32F/0C, or extensive idling or low speed driving for a long distance, then 10000 miles or 12 months.

I have changed oil at 8k intervals and sent to blackstone for analysis. Came back looking good and they recommend I can do 10k. After I get 10k, I will send it in again and see what they say about the oil.

Don't trust your dealer to put in Syn 0-20 W, you might get a blend at best if they are not too greedy.
Do you own, peace of mind, no-hassle proving that they did it WRONG, been there done that, experience counts;)
Good luck, and heed great advice from the other posters on what to replace.
