Tundra for RAM?

There isn’t a pickup around that will give you good gas mileage for your commute.

 

The cyber truck is coming.

 

Coming from old cars, the Tundra is very "high tech" to me. There is so much in the menu that have yet to explore. The center dash screen shows more info than I would need to know. It's cool to play around for the first week or so, but really don't add much value. I usually just get in the truck and go.

I am far from tech challenged and have to say, there is nothing "high tech" about any of the mainstream trucks.

I think most people have a misconception of "high tech". High tech is innovation that you might not see and not necessary interactive with, but improve upon life. Teslas' are innovative, not just because of the electric motors (because electric motors are not new innocation), but as the whole package. The seemless integration of software and hardware, from its camera security features to autonomous features. I am excited to see the Cybertruck and Rivian.

High tech is not about adding X amount of blue tooth connections, X amount of USB ports, X amount of cameras, X amount of heated/cooled seats, X amount of LEDs, X amount of recline on seats, X size sun roof, X amount of customizations on screen, X amount of gears, vacuum cleaner, electric generator, refrigerator. Those are just old tech thrown into old platforms.

There is a reason they are not reliable and gimmicky because they are all afterthought or thrown in and not well integrated.

True innovation is in the integration. ie., instead of manually cycling through different camera views, vehicle would automate showing of the camera that is most useful during the situation. Same with the terrain selection, it should know that there is snow/sand and adjust accordingly.

 

Personally I will take the gauges and radio...I replace my tablets every few years and use an old one on a Rago mount for a "Big Screen" when needed. Building tech into a vehicle only ensures obsolescence. I can buy a tablet for way less than the glitchy/gimmicky in dash stuff.

 

I would personally take a double overhead cam V8 before a pushrod V8 anyday. also, you can have the "high-tech" cylinder cut-out for a few miles per gallon. I have heard way too many failure stories dating all the way back to the '80's to want one.

 

Truck manufacturers still use pushrod V8s because they get better fuel economy under load that DOHC.

Just messing with you. I knew what you meant. You’re definitely at the upper limits. I’m always leaning on the on the lighter side. I try to keep what I’m towing around 60 percent of my rated tow capacity. I know that’s not necessary but it makes me more comfortable. Payload, like mentioned is the issue. With my family in tow, it doesn’t leave much left to play with. I would assume that will be addressed with the redesign. If not, Toyota completely missed the mark.

 

I agree with your post other than the inference that Tesla is reliable and not a gimmick.

I had a 2019 Ram Rebel, had all the options minus air suspension.



I loved the interior, like many said, its probably best one so far, I would say the new 2021 f150 is still a step below, but the little things drove me nuts, I had zero mechanical issue for the engine, but the cylinder deactivation was getting very very noticeable in one year I owned the truck, you could feel the vibration as if someone kick the truck, the issue of cam wear will probably come up like some had issues with.

Issues I had:
- navigation sometimes freeze , one out 3 times I use the GPS it will freeze and requires turn car on and off.
- reverse auto braking sometimes go nuts, it'll brake for no reason, some had issue with the auto braking for cruise control too.
- I had issue with the rear locker, it sometimes just won't engage.
- rear shocks had seeping that I want them replace under warranty, but they claim I use the truck beyond what its meant to do (I use it on trails and house chores).

For mileage, my Rebel is maybe tiny bit better, if you worry about mileage and want a ram, get one that has the taller ratio, I think 3.25, with those you can hit 20mpg on hwy with none at tires.

Overall, I liked my Ram, but love the Tundra, Tundra drives likes wrx of 1/2 tons.

If you want a good commuter that doesn't see much off road use, then yes I can see attraction of the ram 1500, just avoid e torque if you want a hemi.

True, but only in the lower RPM range. As the RPM's increase, the DOHC's efficiency increases well over the pushrod design. As for the reliability between the two, the DOHC is only less reliable if using a timing belt. The 5.7 uses timing chains, when compared to less components of the pushrod design, create a more reliable valve train.

I am not trying to argue. I am just trying to make a point that the big three putting so much into added features are selling bells and whistles rather than reliability.

 

My 3 year old Tundra is worth more than a Ram as soon as the paperwork is signed.

 

Mine was built in June 2019, I believe the modules are still the same until uconnect 5 comes out, I actually had one that was built earlier as demo/loaner while they get the truck ready as it was delayed for no reason, and that truck was a 2018 built, the damn screen just go blank randomly at times.

Another thing that really ticked me off was they stopped the bilstein remote reservoir rear shocks production, I think around March, so when I had seepage on the rear shocks, they gave me bs excuse saying no replacement shocks are available, which I knew was bs.

The Cummins with the AISIN is prob the best drivetrain combo you can get other than 6 speed manual maybe. I looked for a few months for that combo before I Got my tindra and came down to not needing anything that large to tow anymore, even though my 2500 5.9 2wd averaged over 20 mpg.

 

This isn’t a complaining about poor mileage post. That being said. My dads Silverado gets 16mpg average 100% city driving. I get 10mpg with some mixed highway. Do the math over 30,000 miles. I’m excited about the new tundra. I’m hoping there’s a lot of desire for the old V8 and my truck goes up in value for trade in.

 

Yup,you will make it up "ultra1988" with reliability, smiles, and $$$ at trade-in, has worked for me and many others I know.

 

Borrow your dad's truck for a week, drive it on your commute exactly the same way you drive your Tundra and then tell us what mileage you get. Too many variables for an accurate comparison otherwise.

 

I owned my Silverado for 4 years and after I lemon lawed it I got 95% of my original purchase price back. Living in California has its perks, well that may be the only one...

 

At the end of the day there is only so much "tech" you can use at one time. My '19 Platinum is the most comfortable truck I have ever owned, do I wish it had a better sound system yes, can't really argue with the mpg I get 15-16 running around over 18 on the highway. Besides reliability, the 2 most important things are the comfort level of the seat and the ride quality, mine has it in spades and will most likely run forever. I will stick with my Tundra.

 

I used his truck to tow my boat 600 miles last summer and got 4mpg better than my tundra gets on the same trip at the same speed. But it is 2wd.

 

That's kind of an important variable.

 

My brother in law and I both have 2016 trucks. Mine is a Tundra TRD Pro and his is a Ram sport. I paid 45 for mine and KBB says it is still worth around 40. He paid around 38 for his and KBB says it is worth 20-24. Mine still looks new when it's clean, his clear coat is peeling. His has been in the shop a couple of times and mine hasn't. I've never actually ridden in his truck to see the difference in ride, but unless you really just want some fancy tech, you are down grading as far as truck function is concerned.

 

I would be curious to see mpg of a 2wd tundra that was lowered and had 31” tires.

No it starts from the first time you took your vehicle in for repair. For me it was leaf springs at 500 miles. Then took it in two more times until they finally admitted it wasn’t normal and replaced them. So when I hired the lemon law attorney at 35,000 miles because of oil consumption, he got it lemon lawed at 500 miles. Some states don’t even have lemon law. California is 100% on the buyers side.
