Gents, I’m heading to Utah for a week with the family. I was wondering if the spare tire is somehow linked into the computer to tell you if it is low on air? Of course toyota mounted it with the valve stem facing the frame. I don’t want to drop it to check. Too much of a hassle. Owners manual didn’t say anything. Help and thanks

No I’m like 90% sure it doesn’t have a TPMS sensor at all in there. I’d just feel how firm the tire is and if you can indent the side wall with your palm, then drop it and air it up.

Nope. Have to drop it. I don't think there is even a sensor in the spare.

    Seriously Toyota?

First the 10 min shut off for remote start, now this. :frusty:. And don't get me started on no retaining clip for the passenger side floor mat.

Pro Tip: Flip your spare around so you can air it up without dropping the tire.

I don't know of any manufacturer that puts a sensor in the spare.

I know of some that give you an inflator kit instead of a spare.

When are they going to make a truck with 257 useless amenities instead of concentrating on reliability. :anonymous:

Our 2017 Toyota 4Runner Limited has a sensor in the spare. I had to put air in it a couple months ago to get the TPMS to go off.

Well that's cool. Learn something new everyday. It'd be handy, but I'm not super worried without it.

I’ve heard tell that the system will read a fifth TPMS sensor. When I finally buy that full sized spare I’ll find out for myself.

As I understand it it will register 5, but it only displays the 4 rolling ones. I have 5 aftermarket wheels and a sensor in each, but it only shows 4.

Yes that’s what I heard too. Especially since it seems these sensors are the type that only register when in motion

At least on our 17 4Runner limited you are correct. The TPMS came on. I checked all tires and set the to 35psi. Light was still on. Looked in the manual and saw where the spare had a sensor in it also and need to check tire pressure also. On our spare, the stem valve was down so it was easy to check and put air in it. It was at about 23psi if I remember correctly before adding air. Put air in it and TPMS immediately went off. Spare tire also had a real Limited rim on it so not a cheaper universal black rim. If we got a flat, the spare would look same as normal tires and rims. Can only see 4 main tires pressure. Does not show the spare.

Wife had a 2004 4Runner that had a TPS sensor in the spare. Every Fall when the weather changed I had to crawl under the car and air it up.

They make an air chuck that has two ends at an angle to the nozzle shaft. The reverse facing one will usually work on the spare with the valve facing up.
