Anybody go from a ram to tundra or tundra to ram recently? I got my 2019 tundra for the reliability after having a POS 2014 Silverado that I got lemon lawed. But I’m honestly tired of 10mpg, basic interior with zero storage, and my bed bounce on SoCal freeways is crazy fun for my kids but I hate it. Add in remote start, color matched grill, leather seats, upgrading the terrible speakers and I’m at the point where I might as well trade it in. I paid 43(before title, tax, reg) and I can get 40k trade in, tundra definitely holds its value. The Ram has a ton of nice feature, and dealers are letting them for for 10-12k off msrp around here.

I just switched to a 2018 Ram 2500 Cummins Laramie.....

However it's an apples to oranges comparison, I wouldn't have any other 1500 truck except the Tundra

Ram: Power is crazy, interior is very nice, Alpine audio system is great, mpg's are good for a big truck, I have faith the Cummins will be very reliable.

Loved the simplicity of the Tundra, it drove like a smaller truck (in a good way), and I trusted it's reliability. Something about a Toyota, I always was enthusiastic about having the truck, and building my Tundra was a blast, but I was ready for a bigger stock vehicle.

I went from a new Ram to a new Tundra. I was tired of the constant recalls and warranty repairs. The hemi requires mid grade gas so the difference between the MPGS and cost between regular and mid grade gas works out. I was at the dealer so many times they new my name and greeted me when I walked in the door. I did like the tech and the performance of the hemi with the 8 speed. I was tired of wasting my time at the dealership and hearing the phrase 'don't worry, it's covered under the warranty.

I did upgrade my stereo and speakers. Added a 2inch lift and front and rear sway bars. New tires and wheels. There are many out there but this one is mine. Best of luck with your decision.

The Tundra calls for 87 octane fuel. What is midgrade fuel in your area?

Mid grade in California is 89. I run 89 anyways, I have done two data logs on trucks that call for 87 and they both pinged. Most tuners will tell you to run 89 or 91, especially in California.

I get it, those deals are really good right now. I bought a new '14 Ram 1500 and liked it, but I only had it for 3 years. The 6 speed trans was terrible, couldn't hold a gear unless I was in tow/haul.
You shouldn't be getting anywhere close to 10mpg unless you hotrod it everywhere.

Research the 5-10 yr cost of ownership compared to any other 1/2 ton and you'll see the Tundra's mpg's are the least of your worries.
    Good luck on the decision!

I am actually also considering a 2500, it would have less options but would have the Cummins, which from my research holds its value well. Eventually in life I want to pull a travel trailer. The 1500 would probably do the job, but the 2500 would do it much better. 2020 models are also priced very well.

It wasn’t me buying but I was able to get a bighorn down to 43k said and done after haggling. (51kMSRP)Now is the time to get them with employee pricing

I specifically wanted a 4th Gen, for some reason they are my favorite, but the 5th Gens are sweet! I think the 2500's are built better than the 1500's personally.

I drive fairly slow actually. But 80% city, South Bay Los Angeles city driving which is parked at a light most the time. I got 11mpg towing my boat at 75mpg. Best of 17mpg on the highway going 70mph with my tire pressure at 45psi. Gas prices in SoCal make fuel economy matter a little bit more than everywhere else.

Buying a truck for reliability is not always the most exciting choice. You just drive it and know that it will work.

My only concern is having a fairly “plush” ride for my work commute. But the tundra ain’t hacking it anyways so I guess it would be a sideways move.

The ram 2021 1500 rides the smoothest of any truck I’ve ever drove and nicer than most cars. I highly suggest you check them out even though I’m a Toyota guy

The 2500's with the coil spring rear suspension rides fine. I mean you know its a HD truck, but not like an old school HD truck.

My Silverado was a nightmare, but in the end California lemon law made it not so bad of a deal. My tundra headlight already started peeling and my cruise control sensor failed right off the bat. Leaf springs are starting to make noise. Little things bother me. The air comes out of the dash and feet no matter what setting it’s on. I do like the tundra. I also see the writing on the walls that in the next 3-4 years almost all trucks will be in the 20-30mpg area. Which may make these tundras less desire-able.

Personally I don’t think the difference is enough to warrant buying a new truck, but the ram could be considered “better” comfort and technology wise.

Sounds like you have your mind made up. I personally believe that the low tech of the tundra will help keep its value up, while the tech that gets trucks 20-30 mpg will likely be less durable.
Also, if I lived in California I would avoid a diesel at all costs. Just out of fear of new environmental laws/taxes

Yeah that would make a difference, sitting in LA traffic, what's the price of gas down there now?

Yep, I get 10 towing my 5000 lb bay boat. Running back and forth to deer lease in hilly terrain i get 16 and most of the drive is at 70 to 80 mph. I had a good tailwind once and got 18+.

I just switched from a 16 ram 2500 Cummins to a limited tundra. Had so many issues with both of the rams I’ve had that I wasn’t going to do it again. All I tow is a 3000 lb boat. The maintenance on the diesel vs the fuel mpg of a tundra is a wash. Between $10k trans, $2500+ turbo, failed emissions system at 40k, the Cummins was a money pit. Liked the power but wanted reliability. 2 of my customers have 2020’s and the fuel pumps have ruined the motors on them with less than 15k miles. The tundra may not have all the bells and whistles, but it does have reliability.

You should check out some of the Ram forums. I seriously looked at Ram before I purchased my 2016 Tundra used. I could have had a new Ram, 4x4, Hemi for just a couple thousand more than I purchased my used 2016 Tundra for.

But....after checking out review and several of the Ram forums, thought the risk was too high. I would be SICK if I had a new truck and big payment and the truck was back and forth to the dealer for repairs. There were all sorts of issues and gremlins reported by members on different Ram forums- electronics, head units, trans issues, the cylinder deactivation problems, etc.

In the end I would rather have a solid dependable truck and pay for the gas then something that I new would likely need warranty repairs- and what happens when the warranty expires?

Tundra suits my needs, Rams are cool, just not as reliable and that was a major factor for me.

I’d wait for the redesign. I think the suspension will be considerably improved. We have an all Ram fleet at work and they are total garbage IMO. My work truck has the Cummins and it’s solid but I’m shocked to see how many turbos fail within a few years.

What MPGs did you get in your Chevy? If you're doing stop-and-go, a diesel isn't going to help you much if at all. You'll be filling up with fuel that can often be more expensive than gas and although it has more energy, a HD truck weighs more. If you want good MPGs in the city, you have to buy a hybrid. If you want better MPGs on the highway, then slow down. The F150 diesel gets great mileage on the highway, but there's nothing you can do about city driving.

If I was you, I'd do some math. I think you are going to spend a lot of money to save very little (if any at all).

I had a 2017 ram, and it caused me to swear to never buy another Chrysler product. I posted about it before in another thread, so not trying to sound like a broken record. . But damn, It was terrible. . .there were many things to like about the truck. Towed great, rode great, handled like a dream as far as a truck goes, good fuel economy. . . None of that was worth being back at the dealer every other month. Not to me. . .not to mention, all of our local ram dealers are absolute trash. . To make matters worse, when I finally decided to trade the shitbox because I was at wits end with it, the toyoata sales manager literally offered me half what I paid for it. . .it was TWO years old. . . Regretfully, I told him he'd lost his damn mind. Before I crawled back in said shitbox to leave, I pulled it up on nada just to see. . . And he was dead one. . I went back in and apologized and told him to take it. . . .I'll never go back

Is a commuter car an option? Due to your driving situation, the Ram 1500/2500 isn't going to help you except for the ride.

The new Rams are seriously nice trucks. Best in class interiors, ride, transmission, and pricing.

Very hard pressed to not look at one, and throw a couple grand at the longest / most comprehensive warranty you can find.

If you are unhappy with your tundra, then I suggest moving on. Life is too short to be unhappy with your truck.
