On Sunday I was out driving my truck when my traction control got stuck in the off position with my check engine light on. Stopped by autozone to get the code read and it was saying a knock sensor was bad. I have 38000 on my truck.
dis some research and found that rats like to get under the intake manifold and eat the knock sensor wiring harness.
Before pulling my intake manifold up I picked up the wiring harness from local Toyota shop. Unbolted the intake manifold to find one of the knock sensor connectors totally disconnected due to those rat bastards.
after a hell of a time due to the large clamp holding the wires to the rear of the intake manifold my buddy and I were able to get the knock sensor wiring harness replaced.9E95A81F-982A-4948-BD1F-048D48DE1B47.jpg

I didn’t find much on the 3rd gen with this issue but did find 2nd gens with the issue. I believe it’s the same part number but for my 2017 tundra 5.7 it was
    Part number 822190C020
    (Knock sensor wiring harness)
If anyone has rat tracks or any signs of rats in the engine bay I recommend addressing the rats as soon as possible to avoid this issue.

Both of my sensors are out, considering the bits of plastic bags and candy wrapers I had to blow out of the rat den/intake manifold I am pretty sure they remodeled after years of squatting. mines a 2nd gen

A couple of times a year I pull of the engine cover and give it a good pressure wash.

if I pressure wash under the hood with my belt driven pressure washer I will wish I had rats under the hood afterwards.

Any pressurized water over 3000 psi might break connectors and even cut wires if you get close enough.
shoot my 15 degree spray nozzle puts dents on sheet metal.

i just finished scraping and wiping dirt and filth with rag and microfiber. I’m ready to start putting everything back together, hoo raaa.

Use a "normal" type pressure washer like the ones found at the car wash.

After Hurricane Harvey completely flooded my little town (my street became an island, apparently), and two of these little bastards got into my garage and wreaked havoc on my wife's Infiniti. So, I got a RAT ZAPPER from Home Depot. I loaded it with some peanut butter and placed it along side a wall in the garage. Within 48 hours, the little bastards were stir fried!!! Oh, and it's fun too! It was very cathartic to walk out into the garage in the morning and see that tail sticking out of the Rat Zapper.

Not my video, but it gives you the general idea.

I live in an old home, built 1912. And it seems like the same rats are still alive from then because they are so damn hard to get. I have pest control that puts bait boxes and traps, but their traps didn’t work for crap. They would trip them then eat the prize. I even had one eat two pumpkins last year! The second one I was hoping he would eat because it was full of coolant. He did eat it and didn’t die! Borrowed a buddies rat zapper, didn’t work. Traps only work at my house if they are camouflaged With the normal debris that is in the area.
I did just purchase some peppermint spray to periodically spray my engine bay to hopefully keep the rats out. I will update as time goes with the peppermint spray.

Try rat poison. Just be careful of it's placement if you have pets.
