I tend to prefer British spelling to American but I draw the line at tyre and petrol or bitumen when you mean asphalt.

Bathroom and washroom are regular terms for them up here

    I call them Dumping Stations

Washroom is common and what most people I know call it. Restroom is more formal I think and what you'll see on signs, at least around here.

Pisser or shitter is also acceptable when not in polite company. As is can.

I prefer American spelling because I'm lazy and the U serves zero (zed-ro?) purpose. :D I do agree with your line though and will help you hold that one against all challengers.

:rofl:Hahaha. Thanks for that post...I now know at least 400% more about Canadian culture than I did before. Loonies? Toonies?, our friends discussion above now makes sense.

Where I grew up, it was a long time before we were ever sophisticated to call them "french fries", or even much later, "steak fries". Fast food had not been invented yet, and chicken-fried came with mashed and gravy. If you were at the dinner table, your old dad might say, "Pass the 'taters down here, Junior".

Coffee was average but I loved the bagel sandwiches and the efficiency of their service. For example they had a side line for if you just want a drink, you can get in and out right away. No fast food around here is that smart.

First time I went into a Hortons I ordered a bagel breakfast sandwich combo (with the coffee and a remarkably not oily hashbrown), a biscuit breakfast sandwich, a muffin, a chocolate cake donut, a box of timbits, and a frozen vanilla cap (recommended by a local but wasn't my style).

Then I turned to my wife and asked "what are you getting honey?"

The woman taking my order went

I smiled and told her I'm American :oldglory:

I ate it all in one sitting, then went out to explore Vancouver.

I feel obligated to tell cashier's when I go through the USA grocery store or Target and I'm filling up on a cart full of USA only available snacks, drinks, etc

I always say something along the lines of "Can you tell we are Canadian?". They laugh and say "yup".

When I lived in Michigan, I always thought it was cool that you could still buy Mountain Dew in a glass bottle up in Canada.

A side line for drinks only? Efficiency of service? Where the hell was this? It wasn't at any Tim Horton's I've ever been to. I've never seen that at any fast food place come to think of it. At Tim's, there's generally there's a major language barrier since most of the employees are recent immigrants, it takes 10min to get a double-double, the coffee is burnt, the food is just reheated frozen bulk stuff, and 9 times out of 10 the order is wrong.

You sure you were at a Tim Horton's?

I'll be getting some on my Costco run this week for the kids and I to eat over Christmas break. My wife doesn't care for them.

They used to sell 3 large sleeves in a bag, now it's individual serving bags, which I unusually eat 2 of in a sitting

The trick at Tim's is to use the drive through because they'll make 100 people inside wait if there's one car in line.

Yup. I'm sure not all are created equal, this one was in downtown Vancouver near the entrance of a shopping mall. It was right outside of the malls parking structure. I recall it being near a harbor, my hotel had a view of the water and was only a few blocks away.

Service was good at this one, friendly and happy. It took less than 10 minutes to call put my gluttonous American order. They had two lines for regular orders and a register on the side where people went up to buy coffee or juice only. It was brilliant, I saw people who seemed to be on their way to work walk out with drinks almost as fast as thy walked in. That was probably the best idea in fast food I have seen.

Second best is a 3" diameter (I'm sure it was like 75mm or whatever) stainless tube attached to the trashcans at a burger King in Helsinki airport. The top of the stainless tube was a funnel and the bottom had a ball valve. I stared at it while I ate and realized it was for customers to pour their unfinished drinks into rather than throwing the drinks in the trash. To me that was brilliant because my pet peeve at fast food is seeing customers throw drinks in the trash, knowing somebody will have to take that trash out and hope the bag doesn't leak. Every once in a while an employee put a bucket at the bottom and drained the liquid out to dump it.

My wife actually likes Timmy's coffee. I keep my mouth shut about it because I don't drink coffee and because it's significantly cheaper than Starbucks, which is the only other coffee she'll drink. Tim's is also one of the few places she can get a decent vegetarian sandwich when we're out.

When we drive through Gasoline Alley, we generally get food and coffee at Tim's and then doughnuts at Doughnut Mill.

@AzureNightmare that's another difference. Doughnut vs Donut

Just going back to the "color" vs "colour", does that mean I should spell it "Vancover"?

I think you guys also spell "checks" as "cheques"? Not sure if I'm remembering the right country on that one.
