Where should I put my hard earned money? 2018 5.7L. 5 more years of warranty thru Toyota or a black Softopper to give me some more weather proof storage space. Im not the biggest fan of the tonneau cover I currently have on the truck.

TFL put a softtopper on their raptor. I dunno, for a little over $900 I'd spend the few hundred more to get a fiberglass cap.

If you're gonna mod the thing, I'd pass on the warranty.

Softtopper is nice because if you're loading something taller than the cab or wider than the bed, you can fold it down.

    Lots of shenanigans.
I took the risk and didn't get any extended warranties or GAP insurance. I'd rather take the gamble to save some money.

Man. I’m the devils advocate I guess. I’d take the extended warranty all day. Save and find a deal in the soft topper. This only matters if your bumping 3 years , 36k, which you are. I’ve had random weird things happen. Some warranties were a waste, some paid massive dividends. You can get a soft topper anytime. Just depends on how much you want to gamble. Fwiw, Tundras are pretty reliable.

Warranty only works out for you if you need $900 in covered repairs.

Also, this is a Toyota extended warranty? I could be wrong here, but every one of the 6 Toyota trucks I've bought in the last 8 years have been offered with extended warranties, through 3rd party companies, not Toyota.

An extended warranty is insurance against a possible pricey repair. The question is, how much risk are you comfortable with.

Im really not the best person to talk to about this. For me I'm comfortable with all the risk

Warranties are nice I suppose, the few times I've needed them (never on a Tundra) its been a small argument to get work done. That's hard for me because I turn wrenches for a living. I also took red pill a long time ago in regards to mods. Everything that breaks, must be replaced with a more expensive, over built or completely idealistic part :D. If anything its an excuse to spend money on shit I just want but dont really "need". My trucks are never done, its a lifestyle.

For the record, I bought extended warranties on my both my 2005 and 2014 Tundra when I bought them new.
I never used the extended for the 2005, nothing went wrong until the air pump disintegrated at 92K miles.
So far I've never used the 2014 extended warranty either, but I've got less than 500 miles to hit 75K and it expires.

I felt better having the warranty.
But part of the reason I bought them was I didn't have much cash in savings at the time of purchase for either of them.
Now that I have an emergency fund in place, I'd probably pass on the ext warranty.

Thanks guys for all the feedback. I ended up going with the 8yr 75k extended warranty. I’ll have another 5 years and 51k of warranty. I doubt I’ll exceed the mileage. I’ve never done more than 10k a year so i should be fine. Now that I have some peace of mind, it’s time to put some cash together for the Softopper!

This is exactly how I made my decision. I can get the Softopper any time. I had to get the warranty by the end of the month.

I need something that I can take off quickly. Whenever I see furniture on the side of the road, I grab it because I do restorations as a side hustle.

My vote is Softopper. I love mine, great weatherproofer plus folds down or removes in a matter of minutes.

I paid about $1000 for an extended warranty to 100,000 miles on my 2002 Tundra 4.7 V-8 when I bought it new in October, 2001. It covered the water pump when I replaced the timing belt at 90,000 miles for about $300. I never had another eligible claim within 100,000 miles.

I now have about 273,000 miles on the truck. I replaced the the drive shaft at 190,000, the transmission at 250,000 miles, the air conditioning system at 255,000 miles and the rack and pinion steering at 260,000 miles.

I have had to replace the radiator 3 times for leaks beginning at 160,000 miles. I also replaced the brake master cylinder twice as well as all 8 coil units when 2 failed at about 150,000 miles.

The truck is a daily driver and is still going strong. It had very few repairs the first 150,000 miles or so. Toyota's last. Parts fail but parts are usually cheaper than a new truck. I have not had a truck payment since 2005.

I put a fiberglass topper from Leer on the truck for about $1,800 when I bought it new and that was well worth the money,

You make the call on the topper verses the extended warranty.
