Interesting he did the cutting and welding with the carrier installed....and no alignment bar.

If it works and you get another 50k miles it’s money ahead.

Yes, air chiseled the diff cover off first then grind the existing diff cover flange off. Cleaned out a few bits from the bottom of the housing. Tacked the new diff cover on and then checked clearance by spinning the wheels and weld it up. Took about 2 hours total.

What is the alignment bar you speak of? To make sure the new diff cover is on straight?

I'm hoping this rear last the rest of the trucks life.

it keeps the tubes from tweaking, keeping the axle center in line. Cant beleive he left the third in , but it may have helped the housing from warping. You also want it out from under the truck with no stresses on the housing. Throwing all that heat into it will make the tubes bend from jackstands or if he left the wheels on, or springs still attached.

But lots of folks get away with not taking those precautions. Yours will end up fine.

    his welds look good.

Ah... I see what you're saying now. Truck was on a lift, tires on. This is somewhat of a beater of a truck so I was not about to make that much of an effort for this repair. Don't get me wrong I love my Tundra... I don't think anything got squirrelly but we'll she how she goes I guess.

^^^ I see now. Honestly it never really occurred to me that when cutting the diff cover off, the housing could/would move or flex. Time will tell I guess.

    she needing some alignment? :D

I’ve used those a few times. Need to straighten my rear axle and re-truss this winter.
