Measuring for 5100s - body lean question

Measured all 4 fenders today to determine if I should install 5100s up front on mid or top setting.

Measurements taken from rim to fender so tire tread and pressure have no impact.

Front driver: 10-1/4"
Front pass: 11"
Rear driver: 14"
Rear pass: 13-1/4"

I already planned on adding a shim to front driver to give me +1/2". So the front is pretty close. What's weird is the passenger rear is 3/4" lower than the drivers side. This is with a full tank of gas.

So, looking at the drivers side measurements I would say 5100s at top setting (3-1/4" difference down to about 3/4" after install) but looking at the passenger side I think mid setting (2-1/4" difference down to about 1/4" after install).

I def don't want a bro lean so I would much rather have a little rake if I had to choose between the two.

Any thoughts on 1, why such the difference from driver to passengers and 2, what setting on the 5100s do y'all think?

 

I measure mine from the floor to the highest spot mid wheel well. my fronts are 37 inches and back is 39 3/16 on both sides. Completely stock suspension SR5.

Yours is leaning or lower on opposite sides front to back? How is that even possible. Assuming measurement were taken with no one in vehicle. Bad or weak springs shocks on the lower sides? Dunno but 3/4 inch difference seems like quite a bit.

 

I thought it seemed weird too. Truck has 55k miles so I wouldn't think any springs or leafs would be worn enough to notice that much.

 

I went with middle setting and was pleased with the result. Looked a lot better than stock and you keep some rake so your ass doesnt sag while towing.

It I had to do it over again I may have went with the top setting up front and the smallest coachbuilder shackle in the rear that gives ya .6" or so that way I had more lift overall.

 

I do haul quite a bit so that's why I've been so concerned with my measurements to determine what setting to use.

I looked into getting the +2 shackle which gives 1.25" but that cost $250 and I'm not looking to drop that much. Not sure what the +1 cost but should be quite a bit cheaper.

 

Airbags if you sag too much. At the very least, could get some sumo springs.

 

I have 5100s,
Front driver and pass side are almost dead nuts even - no shimming.

 

I'm really curious as to what would cause my measurements to be all over the place and if it's typical.

 

SOB the bilsteins need to be on the same setting no matter which you pick. Can't to one middle and one top the ride wouldn't be good that way.

 

Some ADD A LEAFS "AAL" would help. I hauled alot in my tacoma and rear springs went past flat with no load. ended up putting a set of OME DAKARS on the rear with bump stops. Worked great till I sold it and bought my 2014 tundra. I still haul alot of weight so i Put air bags on to save my springs. Wouldn't worry about any lean. You're the only one that sees it. Enjoy it.

 

Of course not...I'm trying to decide on mid or top for both to level the truck. If I go by the measurements of the driver's side I would install them at the top setting but if I go by the measurements from the passenger side I would install them at the mid setting.

To me I find it odd that neither side, front or back, is close to being the same height.

 

Usually a shim or two on the lower front side solves the lean.

 

I planned on adding a shim up front to solve that lean but there's also a decent lean in the rear. 3/4" higher on the driver's side with a full tank of gas.

Whats everyone paying for 5100's install? I was quoted $350-400? with alignment, it seems kinda high to me?

 

Ohh! I misunderstood. Thought you were talking about the front. If it isn't a manufacturing issue, I'd say airbags or could check and see if anythings broken namely a leaf or a blown shock (unlikely it would cause that much lean but just in case) if all else fails, it could be a faulty body mount. see what the dealer or Toyota CS says.

That's about right. I got quoted 400 (plus alignment) on just my BOSS fronts.

 

Those are def more reasonable from a price standpoint and would give me a lift on top of it. I could set one at 1" and the other at 1.5". But then I feel like I'm covering up the real problem - if there really is one.

I would think a blown leaf or strut would be noticeable in the ride. I hauled a bed full of firewood last weekend and couldn't even tell the difference in the ride. If something was broken I would think it would rode pretty rough. I'll look at the body mounts.

 

There's nothing wrong with your truck. Mine does that too. Just fix the front with a shim and then go from there. It may just magically fix the rears.

 

I figured I was overthinking this but then again I am an engineer and tend to overthink just about everything.

 

Yeah you'd notice both with a load like that...I'm at a loss other than the body mounts.....

Body mounts look fine. I'm gonna put the 5100s at mid as I want to keep a little rake anyways. I'll just live with the rear side lean. Thank all for the help and suggestions.

Leveling out the tundra some will make it look so much better!

 

if you have coil overs would it be better to just adjust the height instead of going the shims way ?

 

Yeah but some people want 3" and bilsteins don't reach up to that.

That's why I got the BOSS setup. No shims needed and the thread adjustable seems better than the clip.
Plus it can help with the lean if you don't have small incremental adjustable markers.

 

Actually I believe people use the shims instead of cranking coilovers because of ride quality. The more lift your manually crank out of coilovers, the more poor your ride quality is due to spring rates. If you shim it, your not adding preload to2 the coil.

Hey I'm good with it. I'm so anxious to level the Tundra. This is something I wanted to do w the Tacoma for 5 years before I sold it. Still haven't bit the bullet yet....
