    Hello everyone,

I am seeking help. I found a noise in the engine a few months back. I have read all the stuff about how noisy these trucks are but this aint it. I have a 2016 limited with about 93k miles on it now. I purchased it at 73k a little over a year ago. After doing some homework, I believe I have a timing chain slapping. I haven't found much info about the sound mine is making though. When idling, I believe it does it cold and warm, there is a "clanging noise" that comes from the engine bay. At first I thought it was the a/c compressor cycling, not it. This noise turns on and off at sporadic time intervals, for lack of better words.

It is going to my trusted mechanic to be looked at. I also have an extended warranty package from purchase that should cover this expense. I am just hoping someone can convince me other wise that this noise is coming from somewhere else. (I WILL GET A VIDEO OF THE NOISE UPLOADED THIS AFTERNOON)

EDIT: VIDEO BELOW in the comments, I was late getting it uploaded.

EDIT: 3-22-2021 The updates of what was found in the tear down and the work done to the truck on page 4!

The 5.7 is a noisy engine. My '16 with 110k was not as noisy as my '20 with 400 miles. And my '12 with 208K is quieter in my opinion. LOL.

Cold, all the oils is at the bottom, hot is a little thinner. Check for proper oil levels and use that extender warranty before it lapse.

Wow. That's not the noise I was expecting.

This is also a issue on the 4.0s in the tacos/4rnr/FJs. Almost always from lack of oil changes. I say this cause you might want to prepare for more work than just a tensioner change. Usually the see a P0016 code. If you can wrench, I would pull a valve cover and look for sludge. If there is sludge then your vvti screens will need to be cleaned out as well as the tensioner change.

after a oil change how quick does the new oil turn dark? Any records of oil changes before you got it?

That video is a nice find. Yes, I think you have your diagnosis. Your noise sounds worse than his video.

Are you able to isolate the sound to any point in there or is it just a general everywhere noise?

I ask because I had a noise somewhat like this too and it was the Alternator in my case.
The thing is that we were able to isolate it to the spot where the alternator is behind the passenger side wheel, its a pain in the ass to make sure but it was pretty convincing too once we started looking right there.

Might not be your issue but it is sure easier to look there than to do this teardown too.

You can take a stethoscope and point on the timing cover case where the tensioner is, if that is where its loudest probably the culprit. Dont see how oil changes would affect a timing chain tensioner. Unless passage to tensioner was plugged, which would be rare to say the least.

Mine makes a similar noise as your first video posted.
I don’t think the second vid is the same noise.

Does yours do it on cold start after sitting and idling for 45 to 90 seconds?

I thought mine was a rocker arm, once the motor heated slightly.
It would stop after a minute.

Does yours stop making the noise after a minute?

@Rebel Tundra Man you might want to try Seafoam in the crankcase, and Seafoam in the gas tank before you go invest big time, effort, and money on this problem. If you read the comments to the video, Rain City Wrench stickied a comment from a Tundra owner near the top that fixed this problem with Seafoam.

In his concluding remarks, he said that it took a lot of force in a vise to compress the tensioner, then he sounded like it worked OK. He had already replaced it and put everything back together. Maybe there was a sludge plug that the vise pressure dislodged. I think the ports in those chain tensioners are very sensitive to infrequent oil changes.

I was recommended to try seafoam or Marvel Mystery Oil right before next oil change.

On the Marvel Mystery Oil you are supposed to drain a quart of oil and replace it with MMO about 500 miles before your next oil change. Then change oil as normal.
Haven’t gotten enough miles on my last oil change to do it yet.

My truck is still under the extended warranty I purchased when I bought the truck. Hoping that will cover this expense. I took it to my mechanic for this one I didn't have the means to diagnose the problem. The two guys at the shop pin pointed the noise to the driver side of the timing case, which tells me its the tensioner.

I have heard all the oil changing tricks, just wonder if that is a mask for this issue for a while. I have changed the oil regularly once I purchased. I did not receive any records when I bought it from previous though.

The noise has also been present for probably 10-20k miles but progressively getting worse. I have read alot of the posts about timing chain adjusters on these trucks, seems like this is a common issue around 100k miles for the driver side one to go out. Even my mechanic said the forums he is involved in they all stated they have changed many but only the driver side one.

Ive seen alot of posts about these trucks getting mistaken for a diesel because of the valve train rattle, calling it "normal" but I dont know if thats 100% the case after finding this issue, mine sounds just like a diesel rattle when the adjuster starts allowing slack.

This issue occurs mainly after it has been drove, shut off for a little bit, and recranked. Doesnt occur on cold start as often as I would have thought. I also thought it might have been the alternator or A/C compressor but the majority of it I believe is the adjuster. the metal cling noise may be something different though, wont know until one of the issues is resolved.

You can also hear at the last second or two of my video the noise goes in and out. It will do it for a said amount of time, then its like a switch turns it off and may or may not do it again after a little more time has passed. It did come back on after a few seconds after I quit videoing though.

I heard that. The noise disappeared completely. I thought you had muffled the mike in the shut-off.

I just changed my oil at 1500 miles, new truck. The pipe dream these engines are broken in at factory, machining tolerances so great, cleanliness so fantastic is bullshit. I am sure its better. I saw metallic particles in every pleat in my oil filter. Oil was still tan in color, came out like cow pissing on flat rock. After looking in pan once I emptied into containers metallic particles. I rebuilt numerous engines and is 100% normal but to let that shit in the engine for 10K miles as Toyota recommends cannot help the engine.

So my Alternator noise was for sure on the passenger side where the alternator is but it also would come and go at random as you are describing and we decided it was the bearings in the alternator making the noise.

With that fixed my engine is as quiet as any that I have heard in a V8 I think so I dont know about the notion that these are just noisy motors based on my own experience with 2 different ones that I have owned.

Sounds just like mine does, when was this start up? like I said, mine normally occurs after it has been cranked and drove around a little bit. It set at the mechanics shop for 3 weeks while he was diagnosing it and only got the noise to occur a couple times. The good thing was, the minute I pulled into his driveway, which is about 2-3 miles from my house, to drop the truck off, the shop owner came running over to me asking what the heck that noise was cause he heard it as soon as I put the truck in park. The rattle/clang did not continue long after I got parked in his lot but I was just glad he got to hear the noise when I first pulled in.

But like I stated you get in and crank it, its hit or miss if it will make the noise on initial crank cold, but you drive it a little piece down the road, shut it off, let it set, its almost certain it will make it.

Yes. 30-90 seconds after cold start and idle.

It starts and then typically stops after a minute or when you rev the motor.
I’ve not heard mine do it any other time.

Do like I said mine does, drive it to the grocery store or something just a few miles after cranking it and see if the problem replicates once you get stopped, then shut it off and see if it replicates after its had a little bit of time to settle the oil down into the pan.

    I’ll give it a try.
I do a ton of driving throughout the day.
Stopping multiple times for different durations.
Only see it on first startup in the mornings.

I use my auto start constantly so it usually idles from 30 seconds to 10 minutes.

I’ll make sure I double check after an extended stop.

I would start and remove the serpentine belt and start it and see if the noise is there. Only run for a few moments because the water pump isn't turning. If the noise is there chances are that it's internal. Change the oil to a 0W20 oil and add a can of Seafoam to the crankcase to loosen up any clogged passages to the chain tensioner. After a couple thousand miles hopefully it impoves. I've heard this noise on some of the 4.6/5.7 when oil changes have been stretch out to long. VVTI noise can also be an issue and sounds similar but usually only on start up after and long sit or after doing an oil change. Rattles for a couple of seconds and stops.

Do you suggest seafoam as opposed to Marvel ?
    Are these two different fixes?
Should I add the seafoam and run as normal or remove some oil to compensate?

Mine has same exact noise as @Rebel Tundra Man. It doesn’t not go away after start up, and is actually more noticeable in gear. I know the truck had regular oil changes but I noticed sludge in the oil fill cap... so I am going to try sea foam. Interested to see what happens with OP’s here.

They are both good products. I've personally used seafoam. When you do your oil change add the seafoam first then oil to the full mark on the stick. If this doesn't fix the issue after 2,000kms there's one more trick that may work. Get a good quality engine flush. The engine flush is mostly diesel fuel and comes in a 1 quart container. You warm up the engine then add the engine flush. You run the engine up to around 2,000 rpm in neutral for about 10min (check the bottle) with no load. Change your oil and filter. Gauge how dirty the motor was by what comes out. You can get the engine flush at Napa.

Just curious are you all changing your oil at the recommended 10k intervals by Toyota? When I took my 2016 CPO in for its second complimentary service they said it was an inspection only... I sat there waiting for a bit thinking and went back to the service advisor and told him to dump the oil and I would pay for it. Been doing it every 5k since. I know there is a lot of good oil in there but I still cant bite on the 10k OCI's. I'll pay the extra for peace of mind. Maybe I am wasting money but an extra $100 a year is worth it to me.

My truck does that same exact noise and has been for the past 170k miles. It started around 100k but only does it when it's cold when it warms up it goes away. I'm at 271k now and its running fine.
