Ford quality - uh oh.

This was exactly why I sold my F-150. No dealer support on warranty issues. I could go on and on...

Edit: a tell tale sign is comparing the F-150 forums and Tundra forums. The F-150 forum I was on was 80% posts complaining and bitching about problems, 20% on upgrades, mods, etc. This forum is 80% about mods, DIY topics, etc. and 20% about problems etc (probably less actually). This forum leads you to spend more money in mods or upgrades to your Tundra, the F-150 forums lead you spend more money at the service desk fixing stuff that isn’t covered under warranty!

 

I had a 2011 Sierra and it was flawless. Except for the time I cracked a cylinder sleeve (I think that's what it was) and needed all the lifters replaced at 60,000kms. Driving in reverse in 4x4 with the pedal to the floor doing donuts on a frozen lake might have had more to do with that than GM's quality though...

 

My friend has a 2009 Sierra Max that he hasn't had a single issue with but he did buy a second vehicle for his commute to save fuel a few years back so I'm not entirely sure how many kilometers he has on it now.

He does drive a bit like you do, too.

I actually take The Woman's 2013 Corolla S to work 90% of the time. Less than half the amount of fuel to buy and the car has under 80,000kms vs the truck's 195,000kms. I only drive the Tundra on weekends now.

 

I asked the wife about that arrangement but she said she wouldn't be able to drive my truck, even in an emergency. Also, if I was driving the Corolla on my 9 km commute and she was driving the Tundra on her 2 km commute, our fuel bills would be a lot higher than the other way around.

 

Ah, that sucks. I guess I'm lucky. The Woman would stick my F150 Supercrew with the 6.5ft box in places even I would second guess it could fit. My 1st Gen Tundra is much smaller, so she has even less problem driving it. We're also fortunate that she works from home, so I'm the only one commuting and that's a little under 15kms. I average $10 or less in fuel per week commuting.

 

Heck on the HD higher trims they even add brackets around the oval showing the problem

 

My brother in law bought a new exploder in 2017. It had a recall or two in the first 2 years. It also has had a mystery clunk since a recall was done, I can't see what is clunking but seems to be drivetrain related (awd). His backup camera stopped working for no reason, they won't fix it even under warranty.

He said I was right, should have paid a bit more for a 4 Runner.

 

My wife has a 2020 F350 with a 7.3 and it’s a steaming pile of garbage from a quality standpoint.

 

Look closer. Maybe on or near that black rectangle in the tailgate....

 

The main reason I am on this forum right now is because of GM's 14-18 1/2 ton quality or lack there of. I have always been a GM fan but my 14 really tested my patience in the 2 years I owned it. I had a great dealer near by but when the service manager says "Mr. AGuyFromNC, I really think we need to trade you out of this truck." instead of trying to fix it and send me a big invoice.....that says something. I loved the way it looked, drove (mostly), the interior, etc and I had my eye on them ever since the first models arrived at the dealer. Crappy AFM lifters (which I think actually hurt my MPG), badly shifting trans, an electric steering rack starting to make noise, power seats that clicked back and forth, OEM headlights so dim they were dangerous at night were all bad things to deal with but the biggest problem was electrical gremlins. When the service manager told me he wanted to help me trade was after something made the truck die on the road at 50mph. It killed all electrical power to the cab/drivetrain, shut the engine down for a few seconds, caused the steering wheel to violently shimmy left and right out of my hand plus other things I am forgetting. All while driving at 50mph rounding a curve. That was the scariest/biggest problem to me and I wasnt alone. There are numerous complaints posted on NHSTA and not a formal recall from GM. Sure there is a TSB but that doesnt mean GM will fix it on their own dime....

Anyways, sorry to carry on but this thread reminded me of why I made the jump from GM trucks. It still puzzles me that so many people can have the exact same truck and have zero problems for years but others have a whole slew of issues. I guess I got a Friday-Before-A-Holiday-Built or a Monday-Hangover-Built truck that time....

 

I would be curious as to what problems you have had with the 7.3 engine? I mentioned on the first page how we bought 3 for work and have had problems?

i wonder what the breakdown is of reliability issues between 3/4 ton and 1/2 ton new GM trucks. The HD stuff seems to be more american made/sourced

 

I think part of it is also that everything aside from the interiors on the HDs is more overbuilt and robust.

 

Automotive industry right now is HOT GARBAGE in quality, reliability, durability. Stand by for a Walt Kowalski level rant.

Everyone is trying to package the mostest, bestest, coolest, super-bowl ad-worthy tech into their cars with:

• Minimal testing and evaluation, in fact some of this crap is so shitty I question if someone even tested it at all, or if there is even a single FMEA document with more than the date on the spreadsheet.
• New suppliers to the automotive world
• Suppliers that are either custom or boutique and not used to the scale of production in the automotive OEM space
• Production first mentality has resumed and become the new habitual way of working.

I think the new Explorer "launch" was a perfect example of this issue. They were fixing these piles in the parking lot of another nearby plant in downriver area of Dearborn (Flatrock).

With 84 month financing, you can pay for this garbage, and when it gives you issues, you trade it for another pile.

Consumer trends are a big part of this problem: OEMs are losing incentive to thoroughly evaluate the tech they put in vehicles.

Other areas have same issue.
Appliances--can I get a washer, dryer, or fridge without a goddamn tablet in it?
Firearms--shorter, lighter triggers, that drive unproven, and risky changes in proven safety systems, and ignition systems that are hokey, gimmicky, and yep unsafe. Tools--outsourcing causes loss of integrity and the tool can become dangerous. No one is flying out to China to check on that chroming application unless a lawsuit happens. No one.

I have a large set of metric and standard Craftsman wrenches that are 31 years old. They have put food on my table professionally for 14 of those years. Same with sockets, ratchets, screwdrivers, and other associated hand tools. They have all been used, abused, and worked hard.

Not a single spec of rust or any other quality defects. They have been in high humidity environments too.

I bought a back up basic set of wrenches for the common sizes. Chinese Craftsman. I now live in West Texas. I shit you not...the wrenches haven't been used any harder than taking them out of the box and put into my tool box, and 2/3 are rusted. 2-3 are rusted so bad they may not be usable. This is sitting in W. Tx. 2 years old. In a very low humidity environment. I know I have some older wrenches that have sat in a small puddle of battery acid...no rust. I have a kmart set of wrenches I got as a kid 40 yrs ago that still aren't rusted.

It seems like the incentive to make a better product (focusing on manufacturing operations, waste, quality, defects, etc) has now been taken over by incentives to make a product look better, cooler, edgy, newer, instagram worthy.

Does it have the ford death wobble? Ford told me it was by design and they had no fix. I installed a leveling kit and caster correction and it hasnt shown up again.

That's marketing. Pretty sure it's actually the "F Series" pickup is the best selling vehicle in America for something like 24 years running. That would be all their pickups combined. As stated previously, they have a good marketing department.

 

The market also counts GMCs and Chevys separately.

 

What is that theory called? Planned obsolescence? A lot of companies/manufacturers now are all about that bottom dollar, saving costs, etc...Its tough to find a good quality product that isnt going to break the bank. I still have my father's Craftsman tool set from the late 80s (wrenches, power drills, socket set) that I still use today, all of my GE appliances had numerous issues that were thankfully covered under my home warranty. Its a damn shame now.

 

Yes, if you look at it as GM as one, there are more GMC and Chevy trucks sold there are Ford. I guess that is fair, depends on how you look at it.

Everything, worst interior of anything I’ve ever been in. Back up camera works when it’s feels like it wants to. I like my truck 9999x more than that thing.

 

I gotta agree with the guy that said that all new cars are garbage.

About 1990-2010 was the peak of automotive reliability and simplicity. It's all downhill from here. Too complicated and built by the lowest bidder.

As far a Ford is concerned I dont even now how they can run a profit even without warranty problems. If you even had to buy parts for one you would know. Six different brake options and five different grilles, headlights, and bumpers for one model of car. "Identical" parts made in mulitiple factories that arent actually identical and not interchangable. I dont know how or why they do it that way.

 

My 1997 T-100 with 263,000 miles on it (my daily driver) says Toyota on the back.

 

It would be great if Ford did start inspecting the incoming supply parts better and even focused on quality, BUT my gut tells me they will figure out a way to decline warranty repairs with BS excuses and fancy legalize to lower their warranty costs instead

 

Good old Ford electrical gremlins. Some have made me laugh pretty good (fuel mileage got BETTER on the instrument cluster when I put my foot to the floor), some annoying (the percussive maintenance I have to do on my current work truck to see the time and radio display) to costing me time (window that wouldn't close). Don't think I've had a Ford without one.

 

Too many folks I know have bought Ford or GM and bragged about all the bells and whistles to me when I had my simple little Taco.

I was still driving my Taco while those trucks were long gone due to issues. I got 15 years from my Taco before I sold it in primo condition.

I now have a Tundra, and I expect another easy 15 years from it.

While Toyota may not have the fad bells and whistles, it does live and breath QUALITY, and the customer experience.

I'll take that ANY day!
