    Hello all!

New to the forum here, from CO. Just Purchased a 2020 tundra sr5 double cab in Black 218. Purchased from the Toyota dealer with 2 miles on odometer.
I'm here to hopefully gain some knowledge about my truck and as time goes on find resolutions and answers for maintenance, modifications, and up keep!

Sadly in first month of ownership and about 3000miles I'm already experiencing something strange with the truck. I left my house the other morning and noticed a clunking noise when turning left and right, at any speed. Sound is coming from the passenger front side, can slightly feel it in the floor board. The noise lasted for most of the day, after 30 miles of driving stops and goes, reverse and forwards. Not even full clock turns, just wiggling the wheel back and forth quarter to half turns.

Strangely after parking it for the night and going out the next day the noise disappeared and has not returned. Everything is under warranty and I was preparing myself to make the appointment with the dealership, but now the noise has disappeared.

I suppose its possible that ball joints, control arms, or sway bar are having an issue at 3000 miles?

Thanks and I look forward to being apart of the forum!
    - Chris

You'll need one of these, shove it through the grille, til you hit the firewall, twist it back and forth until the car alarm goes off.

Welcome from WA. Your issue didn’t ring a bell for any known issues. My ideas are either something in the suspension is loose or the 4wd hubs are engaging. Either way, hopefully the dealership can find and fix it.

    Hello, thanks for the welcome!

Can you elaborate on the hubs engaging in relation to 4wd? Though I was not in 4wd at the time of the noise, I have been frequently using 4wd .

A long shot and a guess, take a look at the wiring harness going into the firewall on the passenger side. If it is loose, it will clunk. Sometimes it will move slightly and cause a clunking sound.

    Thanks for the input!
That would be wild if the wiring harness made such a noise. To me its more metallic in nature, like a metal bar hitting one side and then the other.

Welcome from Denver! This community has tons of good tips and some great tundra owners that are extremely knowledgeable. At first I thought you were describing the ABS brake check noise but it sounds like you are hearing it more than that. Did they bump the rotor cover when putting on the tires? It could be rubbing on the rotor slightly.

Nice truck btw. Did Autonation put the upgraded studded tires on the truck? Is there a chance they did something when they swapped tires?

Welcome from the wet side of WA. Nice looking truck.

If you've used the 4WD, could it possibly be a case of something not disengaging correctly when you had last taken it out of 4WD (I remember back in the early Gen 2's there was a transfer case TSB where it wouldn't correctly disengage, but that hasn't been a specific issue in a long time)? Or, is it possible that the when the tires were installed they bumped/damaged the speed/ABS sensor on the front passenger wheel? Having a speed sensor going off makes for a nightmare of clunking/crunching noises if you're not ready for them while the traction control tries to do its thing. I had a set of 305/65's on my 2008 that would cause the speed sensors to go ape-shit whenever I cornered hard.

Nice truck! I think it is the ABS self check noise. It happens every time you turn off and on the engine. If it is ABS self check noise, it is normal.

I don't think what he has in normal, he said it lasted most of the day. My truck does exactly as you describe but only on first putting it in gear and driving away. Not saying it isn't an ABS noise but it shouldn't last for what he stated.

    Hey thanks for the welcome!
I installed the tires at 200 miles on the odometer. The noise started at 3000. Im confident that the dust shields are in good order.

Hey thanks for the welcome and reply!
Im somewhat suspicious of the 4wd at this point. I did use it the day before the occurrence but disengaged probably a quarter mile before parking at home.

Hey thanks for the welcome and reply!
Im confident it's not the abs as I've familiarized myself with that noise. The noise I'm hearing happened through out the day and with every left and right turning for 30 or so miles.

    Hey there!
No autonation did not. I put them on at 200 miles and haven't had noise occur until 3000 miles.

I wish I had pulled my phone out and recorded the noise. It was clearly audible and loud enough to pick up on my phone I'm sure. It would have been nice to show the dealership what's being heard. Now that it's not happening anymore it'll be the classic story of dealership chasing ghosts and finding nothing.
For the record I had pulled over with concern and got down on the passenger underside and grabbed and wiggled everything, however all seemed good. Nothing loose for what I could see.

I was thinking along the lines of what @RainMan_PNW was thinking. Not exactly sure what the sound is, but bumps and thumps can be things in the system not getting disengaged (or staying disengaged). I don't know how the 4WD system works on the Tundra, but my last vehicle's system (F150) worked on a vacuum. It needed the vacuum to keep the hubs disengaged (and guess what didn't work?).
