What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Jacked up the front end. Pulled the “old” rotors & pads as well as the legit old calipers off. Replaced the front brake lines with the Wheeler’s.

Passenger tire has apparently “always” rubbed for previous owner.

Ran into this craziness and decided I’m calling it for the night. Last time it was seemingly: me + hunger + current time = invisible problem. Let’s see if this is another invisible problem.

 

This is the last piece I am waiting for. Looks good!

 

Yeah. I went old skool. Toyota Guys used to fill their door and rocker panels with oil in the 80’s.

You may remember my other method of frame greasings gives a nod to the Jeeps Wagoner approach from 60-70’s where they sprayed the grease on at the factory. You could scrape it off with your finger nail 20 years later and the frame looked brand new!

That coat hanger may be too stiff but the idea is right. The electrical wire I mentioned is a little more pliable. If you remember I did my LED blinkers in 3 stages of about 3 hours each. The door jamb to footwell fishing took about an hour each side. Nice and clean factory look still.

Your old wire can be used to pull the new like you said, but may pull off of the taped connection leaving you back to square one.

@FrenchToasty hows those smoovv gear shifts going? Probably feels like a new truck with all that new fluid.

 

Where are the rest of your wires that seemed to be in my way in that rubber bridge?

 

Sadly I haven’t driven it since my fluid swap, only the first test drive. We went to the lake yesterday to check out camping spots but took the 4runner. Today I’m meeting the guy who is transporting my headers from houston, I’ll be trading him smoked ribs for his troubles, so I’ll probably take it when I meet him.

 

That's the Japanese method I'll try again today maybe. Also considered using a long zip tie with the buckle clipped off.

The last few cars I did this on had way more room both in the boot and between the door jams.

 

After my clunk hunting comment generated such a great discussion about axle wrap etc, I found mine needs a bit more than a clamp!!

@Professional Hand Model all the cool kids only have driver side bump stops.

 

You may be able to just see them in the pic behind the speaker wire.

 

Threw old rotor on. No issues. Pulled it off. Set torque at 10 lbf and threw on all 6 bolts. Invisible issue gone.

Still weird to me that old rotor with just two bolts runs seemingly straight but new rotor with two bolts is wobble. Maybe more weight? I dunno. I need to start earlier and end earlier. That much I know.

 

I think @Tundra2 will agree; you need to eat a hearty breaky.
That’s a pretty rediculous run out on that rotor, maybe take it to a shop and have them check it? Or maybe something was on the mating surface?
I have a reliable shop that I plan to have all my stopping apparatus’ turned and resurfaced at. I used to take work mobiles to this place; and I would always watch every single thing they did, not due to trust but more interest, which lead to more trust. But also lead to know which jobs to ask them to preform.

 

@jpink did you make sure the rotor was pressed hard against the hub? Sometimes the nuts won't swallow the lug completely and leaves room for wiggle like this. I would check the hub mating surface and the rotor mating surface, then press the rotor on tight and try with 3 nuts, inspecting the inside of the nuts first for no obstructions.

If it still runs out like that send those back.

 

Sprayed some black wool wax on the underside. I'll have to pick up some more but got the major worry points covered.

Looks like probably 6-7 cans to do the whole underside properly included inside the front boxed sections, rocker panels, and bed sides.

 

I've been wanting to try wool wax. Can't find it locally. Did it go on thicker than Fluid Film?

 

Put some long highway miles on her. Some last observations on the u-joint clamp thingy: When driving on super smoovv highway she tended to have a slight wandering which was very nuanced and I attributed it to the front (steering rack). It only was noticeable at speed in the smoovv straights.

Now that is no longer happening so I guess the rear axle and leaves were slide slipping a hair? They were splayed and straightened out as best as possible a while back, but they weren’t perfectly aligned nor clamped.

The general feeling is a solid north/south axis and the rear feels like it has some weight in it, but it doesn’t.

Stopped by a lake a couple Islands over to Tan my Hands.

 

About the same honestly. Different smell but I also picked the black so it was easier to see the coverage. Ended up using around a half can in each bedside.

I couldn't find either in black locally so I ended up with Amazon.

 

Just redid the suspension with ome shocks and springs as well as all new bushings. Wanted to also install a diff drop as its a bit higher. I got the wheelers offroad kit which says it's compatible but I'm not really sure how it is possible to space the diff down. When I drop the diff down and put in the spacers it is touching the cross member. I didn't keep the spacers in since i imagine the metal to metal contact would make noise and vibration. Anyone else used this kit or another? How did you have space to install!

Yup. Driver's side is missing too. There are three "one time I put way too much in there" events I can remember is which I could have done this damage. One was a long distance event. Wonder if I destroyed to bumps on that trip and the broke the spring on a subsequent overloading.

So, what leaf packs to replace them with....anyone using the General Spring HDs? How badly do Deavers do with a load, too soft right?

 

ATS seems to have the best price at the moment on a factory replacement (4 leaf) or heavy duty (5 leaf) leaf springs. From what I have been able to find/read the HD leaf springs aren't too bad of a ride for everyday use and they have an increased load capacity of 1000 pounds over the stock springs.

 

Had a couple close calls with the Golden Hands. A bumble bee almost got me on the beefy part of my top of hand and I somehow obtained a splinter when my other hand brushed a bush. None of this would happen in Holly Wood.
