Bed extender kinda...ideas

I’m looking to make my own bed extender type of contraption. I like how when you flip a bed extender around it makes a space where you can put gear and it won’t slide around. I do not like that the cheapest one I have found was 260. Any of you crafty animals have ideas of something I can make that would accomplish this?

 

Buy an aluminum motorcycle ramp and start cutting?

 

Definitely an option. That’s what I’m looking for. So it would be a bed divider and keep stuff closer to the tailgate.

 

I made something similar out of just 2x6's. There's slots on the sides of the bed you could drop in a 2x10 or so to prevent everything from sliding towards the cab. Doesn't extend the tailgate any but at least keeps things close to the tailgate.

 

Ya that’s exactly what I’m looking to do. Just keep some stuff on that end. You have a pic of it by chance?

 

Not my pictures but something similar to this. You can make any design or height you want. If you look close, you can see the slots on both sides of the bed that will hold the boards in place. a hell of a lot cheaper than $260

No Problem. I literally just grabbed scrap wood in my garage, screwed it all together and threw it back there. It's a hair short and ugly but it's functional.

You could always keep an eye out on FB marketplace or craigslist down the road too

Check Craigslist. I bought a near new OEM extender for $120. Seller sold his tunny and had no use for it. I got a new in box OEM bed rail system for $130 off Craigslist. Again.....seller had sold his tunny and had no use for it!

 

Dude every time I look on craigslist and put in the search I get no results back is there like a secret button that I missing?

 

Rich, I've been so lucky over the last few years on Craigslist. I bought a near new full cover Bed Rug off Craigslist for my 07 DC. $200! Seller totalled his tunny. Bought a new pos RAM for him and one for his wife. Both into dog shows. Traveled all over. Once again.....had no use for it. He was asking $220. When I went to pick it up he mentioned his tunny was totaled. Heh...heh...."will you take $200?". Of course he said yes. I had to vacuum some dog hairs. BFD!

I forgot to remove it from my 07 when I traded it in on my 14. Damnit!!!

I took a 2x6 piece of redwood and sprayed it with bedliner. Works a treat and looks good.

 

I like the bedliner idea dress it up a little

 

I stole a net out of my wife’s 4runner. We bought it used so maybe it’s not OE. But it’s one of those stretchy kind. I just stick things in there and close the tailgate and it sandwiches them between the net and tailgate and the rest of the time it’s against the tailgate out of the way.

I like the redwood idea but simply stain and and clear seal it!

 

Class it up. I like that.

 

Redwood is nice. No need to cover it up with bed liner. Redwood will last longer than your tunny........maybe...ha!

 

As mentioned I have the extender but I just might get some redwood to use as dividers too. I have some Harbor Freight extendable dividers but the the redwood is a better idea imho.

I bought redwood because it lasts longer than Douglas fir and looks better than pressure treated.

Once I put it in I decided to match it to the existing bed rug and bed liner.

 

I use a 2x4 that I hinged in the middle so I can fold it up for easier in cab storage.






For additional storage...

I then used two L brackets on the forward most deck rail screws to secure a board with a 2” rubber lip which allows me to access the items along with keeping them in place during travel.

 

See that’s mint dude!. The containers I have are weather proof and lockable I just want to be able to keep them in place. Pay 260 for a cage to do that is def working harder not smarter.
