Regear questions

I want to put 4.88's in my truck, can someone explain what this will do? Does it raise shift points? I am trying to take some stress of the truck as my tires are very heavy for this small engine

 

Maybe I am wrong but if the tires are not larger I would think it would shorten shift points since the higher gears will cause the motor to rev out quicker.

I have 32.6" tires but they are really heavy tacomas usually need a regear from 31"-33" tires and with my engine I am assuming it's the same situation

 

Isn't that the stock size tire on the Tundra? What does the side wall say for size on your tires?

I had 33's on my Taco (dbl cab) and didn't need regear.
Tundras are heavier sure, but you shouldn't need regear on an almost stock tire.

If you're towing I can see the benefits of 4.88 on the 4.0. Do you happen to know your stock gears? 4.10? 4.30?

 

I have been told it is a 3.91 but also have seen a chart that says I am on 4.10's, having an issue with overdrive after the big lift where the RPM's get too low at too early of a speed around town because of the gearing. It's a OD issue my mechanic told me its normal because of the big tires, I feel it is an issue a 5.7 would experience with 35's

 

255 is stock but they are much lighter tires, these are heavy duty thick tires weigh 48 pounds each, I added alot of stress with these tires, I forgot what it is called but it is added weight to what the engine needs to move I definitely felt a big difference when I put these tires on

 

The weight of these tires made a hugeee difference in the gas mileage and acceleration of this truck but It didnt have issues with the level kit, the big 4" lift kinda pushed it over the edge, I'm guessing with the weight distribution change it was just enough to be bothersome.

 

Dayum, what kind of tires do you have? Sadly there's no 4.56 so your best bet is used 4.30 which can get hard to find. If you don't plan on moving up in size, 4.88 makes no sense... IMHO

I would be running at 5th gear 35-40 mph shifts too early when I don't need the overdrive gear

 

I think I have a 7.5" ring gear the guys at 4WP sent me the invoice for 4.88's I can attach the info if you want

7.5"? no way, Tacomas have 8.4 or bigger.

 

I have cooper discoverer at3/4s These were a heavy duty tires rated for a much bigger truck like an f250 hence the big weight difference compared to other tires.

I called they asked what I wanted to move to which is a 4.88 and they rung it up for me.

 

7.5"... that seems insanely small for such a truck, the weight alone would stress the living crap out of that diff. Are you sure they're not thinking front diff?

 

You've got me thinking... I spoke to them yesterday, they gave me a quote for a 4x4 and then when they realizes it is a 2x4 the price dropped 1K. Any idea how I can figure out the axle size? not sure if the dealership will run my vin today. Would be very annoying to have my truck at that shop any longer than it needs to be over a logistics error

 

I am trying to figure out if I have the 10.5" giant ring gear... not too much info out there

from my search it looks like you have the same gears as the 4.6L V8 so the 4:10 ratio.

I can't seem to find ANY info on the V6. Nitro doesn't even consider the V6 in their gear sets however, they do make it quite clear the 4.6 and 4.7 v8's use a 9.5" rear...

well! thats good! now you know! I'd go with 4.30's (available at Nitro Gear), gives you some extra room for slightly bigger tires too without overkill.

 

Can I ask why you think 4.88 is overkill? I see alot of people put them on tacomas with small tires because the overdrive is too tall, My overdrive feels similar as its a 0.72, I did the math and I could do 70 on the highway at 2300ish rpm I usually dont drive faster than that when I am ever on the highway

 

4.88" is usually reserved for 35" and 37" tires; Toyotas have a very healthy low end and they're very efficient at delivering power to the ground, you want to keep it as close to stock as possible to avoid gear hunting.

Look at this chart, its probably not the best for our trucks but it'll give you a good idea. My tundy cruises at 1500~1700 RPM @ 60-65 MPH on stock 4.10 (I think) and 33" tires, so yeah... chart doesn't do it for me as it is since I've done no test in 4th gear.... I just might when on my way home and share my findings.

 

I had my fair share of looking into these charts but I couldn't find one that applied to me, I only make 270 HP compared to a 5.7 that makes 380 the only good comparison is the 4.0 tacoma
