My son-in-law works at Best Buy and wants to get me a remote start system for Christmas. I have a ‘18 CrewMax with a key not push button start. Any suggestions? I would love it if I could use my factory key but I want to get something that is good quality. I also want something that doesn’t shut off when I open the door and get in. Thanks in advance.

Just put an idatastart LR 6000 2-way kit in the wife's Mazda CX-5. Works great with long range starting abilities, keeps running when taking over and comes with two 2-way transmitters. Sure there's a compatible setup with the Tundra also.

Thanks. I want to stick with what they sale at Best Buy as he gets a discount. I think the 2 options that I see are Compustar and Viper.

I may be mistaken but my understanding with Compustar is you pay a monthly fee for cellular usage? I was thinking about Viper but they were on back order and also came only with one 2-way and one 1-way remote. The idatastart was available and came with two 2-way remotes, although I don't know if Best Buy sells them.

I'm sure you'll be happy with whichever unit you end up with, good luck!

Compustar is an excellent choice. I have had it for about a year the only downfall is that you have to pay a yearly or monthly fee if you want to use the system with your cell phone. The price is not bad based on the plan you decide to go with. I would recommend the Compustar.

I have a Viper in my ‘17. Very happy with it and as long as you put the key in and turn it to ignition before you hit the brake, the truck won’t shut off.

also, Viper has harnesses that plug in to the truck, so you don’t have to do a lot of cutting... just get the right harness.

I have a compustar model 4905s on my Tundra with a remote that has a 1/2 mile range. For $249, I love it. I put the viper on my wifes pilot. The viper remote is pretty shitty and doesn't get you any more range then the factory fob. What I did buy the viper for is the mobile app start. It is $70/year, but she can start the thing from anywhere which is nice for where she works. I know there is the add on for the compustar one as well, but it wasn't on sale when I wanted to get for her. Best Buy gets reeeeealy busy with these sales so if your going to get one, order it asap and get your free installation scheduled.

I have a 2 way Compustar from BB and pay no fee. Works fine for us.
Long distant transmitter and not on a cellular plan.

Depends on the Remote you get with the Viper. The one for my Tundra will start the truck much farther away...it’ll start it in my pole barn 200 feet from the house even with the barn all closed up. The one I just had put in my RAV4 will start it a good half mile away with the long range 2-way remote...I’ve tested it, but you’re right that if you don’t get a long range remote, it’s short range.

it doesn’t and I can use my factory key fob to remote start it pressing the lock button 3times. On my wifes Tucson she had to get the single button fob as her OEM key fob couldn’t get programmed like mine. But with hers you can use pit stop so you can leave the car running while removing the key but I can’t do that on my tundra
