Wait a sec. You mean my 2010 has a transmission cooler? That's one more thing to go wrong and break! Thanks a lot Toyota! So much for reliability and dependability. Keep adding crap to these truck and there will always be issues. I'm done. There is a reason Rams are selling so well now days.

Maybe they'll give me a 3rd gen Tacoma loaner while my Tundra is in service for another recall, lol. They are talking about giving me my own reserved parking space.

Transmission thermostat opens up at 195-200F, only to have an aux cooler bring temps back down to 180F, transmission thermostat opens up at 195-200F, only to have an aux cooler bring temps back down to 180F, transmission thermostat opens up at 195-200F, only to have an aux cooler bring temps back down to 180F, transmission thermostat opens up at 195-200F, only to have an aux cooler bring temps back down to 180F....

Wonder how many transmission thermostats were pinned open or replaced under warranty? Pretty sure @hagrid has the data.

Does anybody else feel your truck surge while off the gas in drive, like when you are pulling into a parking spot? Also the engine races occasionally when going from reverse to drive? I think I'm going to ask them to check it out when it goes in for the fuel pump recall. Might as well have them try to fix the sun roof rattle too.

I've given up on the front end vibration. They finally defaulted to the "it's normal" on that one.

Enjoyable thread guys. Particularly the ‘engineers know what they’re doing’ layered with ‘Tacoma transmission is crap’ comments that no one seems to find at odds. ‘It’s not about saving money, it’s about less parts to break’ might be the winner though.

WTH, I commented on the Tacoma trans.

As far as the cooler just add one if you feel it needs it. Have you looked at the price of the domestic trucks lately? I would spend a grand on a Tundra to get the reliability over any of the domestics.

Price def isn't in Toyotas favor. For the price of a limited Tundra which gets me seat heaters and auto hvac chevy gives you heated steering wheel, remote start, heated and cooled seats, steps on the rear bumper, sharp looking wheels, comfortable seats, stereo that doesn't sound like a transisor radio taped under the dash, etc.

the taco trans was put out by toyotas engineers right? so they are subject to screw ups. this lack of a cooler on the tundra is one of them. adding an aftermarket cooler to a system designed to operate without it begs the question 'can i screw up my transmission by running it too cool?'.

overbuilt and understressed is what makes toyota trucks great. this is a very real step away from that concept. and if we start having doubts about mechanical reliability on toyota trucks then the domestics are there waiting with 'hey we figured out the motor thing now so if you can put up with electrical gremlins and leaky windows we're gonna give you a lot more for your money'

Yes, running it too cool can hurt it. Except there is a thermostat built into the cooler system.

Tacoma transmissions aren't like exploding or a reliability concern, some people just don't like the way they drive.

I found the opposite to be true. I looked at the F150 hard but they were really high. I could get a Tundra CM Platinum with pretty much everything for just north of $45k. I always scratch my head when I read about $50k Tundras. Price being equal I would have probably gone with the F150.

Correct. The transmission in the new Tacomas was tried and true way before they used it in the 3rd gen Tacoma.

I had a Silverado. What a pile of crap. Yes it had more features but it had constant oil leaks, #7 spark plug fouling, burning oil, front end issues and body squeaks. All of it was dealt with under warranty but when that ran out I dumped it. Then I got hit again realizing how much it had depreciated. Never again but good luck on new Silverado. Don't let the door hit you in the a$$ on the way out.
